Ben:

Dodging and deflecting attacks from all comers, Ben totally misses the massive rend attack which nearly brings him to his knees.  Barely standing, the Paladin attempts to steel his mind once more against the babbling of the Jabberwock!

Titaani's boomerang glances off the massive dragonoid in a near-miss.

Matilda, Horatio, and Pud, are driven mad by its incessant burbling.
- Matilda does nothing except use all her movement to run north, near the frozen wizard.
- Horatio does nothing except use all his movement to run southeast, into the far corner of the room.
- Pud races southeast and makes one melee attack against Titaani:
    Pud Boomershank attack v. Titaani: 7. Hit: 6 piercing damage.

Ben, somehow remaining clearheaded, is up next!

Ben:

Whispering a silent prayer to Sune, Ben straightens himself us even though he is grievously wounded.  His companions, bereft of sanity from the babbling of the monster before him, scatter and attack each other.  Somehow, he is spared…He must save them!

Attacking the Jabberwock’s long sinewy neck, Ben tries to end this horrific struggle, pouring all the blessings from Sune into his attacks!

On a first hit, Divine Smite with Level 1 slot::  16

Ben lops its head clear off. The Jabberwock is dead.

Combat is over. 

The burbling ceased, those affected are clear-headed once again.

Everyone may act.

"Ow!" Titaani whines, rubbing her shoulder. "What the heck, Pud?"

Her complaints are immediately forgotten, however, as she takes in the dead Jabberwocky. "You did it, Ben! Well done!!"

Matilda collapsed to the floor in shock.......how?......why wasn't she dead? How did fuddy old Ben?  Wow......but he's just Ben?

She looked over as she heard Titaanis voice........ok...Sis was safe.......

She stood up shakily and walked over to Ben, " I..........sorry.......I'm so sorry."

Ben:

Stunned that he is still alive, Ben takes a deep breath and stares at the dead monstrosity before him.  Answering Titaani, he says, “I didn’t want to have to kill it, but I could tell it was angry and was going to try and kill us.  And when my friends started acting crazy and attacking each other, I knew we couldn’t all get away…”

The pain of his wounds catching up to him, Ben sinks to a knee and almost passes out, but he catches himself just in time and uses his last spell to start to close the massive slash on his chest and relieve the smoky burnt flesh from where the fire breath flowed over his form

Cure Wounds level 2:  16

Horatio looks around wildly trying to gain his bearings. He hears the others talking from down the hall and rushes back to them. "Is everyone okay? I'm so sorry Ben, I'm no coward, I swear! I don't know why I ran like that, it's like something else was in control of my body!" Tears start to well up in his eyes as he counts each of his companions to make sure they are alive. 

Ben:

”That’s alright, Horatio—it was that babbling that seemed to drive everyone crazy!  I have no idea how I was able to resist it….unless…” begins Ben.

Putting a hand into his pouch, Ben pulls out a smooth, polished gem.  It is his wishing stone, and it glows brightly with a radiant and worm golden light reflected in his mirrored holy symbol of Sune.  Even as he looks at it, the glow starts to fade and the gem becomes inert.

”I didn’t make an explicit wish, but I have always wanted to do something important, help save people, maybe even be heroic,” says Ben in awe.  “Maybe I just got the opportunity to accomplish the true desire of my heart and the wishing stone helped me retain my senses long enough to protect us,” he guesses.

Pud snaps out of it with his old knife in hand and Titaani admonishing him for attacking her. He throws the knife away and runs after Titaani apologizing profusely along the way.

”Titaani…I..I…didn’t mean it. That wasn’t me. I’m so sorry! Please forgive…”

He stops dead in his tracks at when he sees the dead jabberwock and Ben struggling to hold himself up. He runs to help Ben, while giving the jabberwock a stiff kick along the way. 

“Ben!!! Oh man, how?  Whoa…you look pretty bad. Let me help you.”

Pud touches Ben with his magical multi tool and strains to channel healing energy to their hero. cure wounds: 13 hp (10 from 2nd level cure wounds + 3 bonus from alchemical savant feature)

All is quiet again in the ballroom. Zybilna and her various courtiers remain time-frozen, as is Ringlerun, next door. The massive jabberwock lay dead on the floor, half atop a dead aurochs, its head parted from its body.

"And I owe you an apology as well," declares Strongheart to Pud. "I don't know why I did that."

...Then a loud, bestial shriek echoes from the hallway to the east. "HrrrrrAUGHT!"

Matilda slapped her forehead, " I told Mercion to  wake up the owl...I was hoping it knew how to stop the dragon cos owls are wise. And I thought it might know how to calm down one of her other pets being one itself."

She took off at speed towards the ' bird cage'.

“It’s okay, Strongheart. It looks like that dragon was doing something funny with us. We weren’t ourselves.” 

Pud flinches and covers his ears at the sound of the screech. 

“Oh no! Hopefully that thing isn’t hungry.”

Ben:

Standing up, Ben feels tired but resigned.  "Hopefully it is still in its cage," he says, "And we can get the horn back so we can revive Ringlerun."  Looking down at the Jabberwock corpse, he adds, "Though I suppose we have a good supply of meat here for the owl if we need it."

A thought coming to Horatio, he holds up a hand to Ben before the group move on. "Wait. You killed a Dragon Ben! We are going home when this is done, and when we do no one will understand what we endured. No one will believe what you've achieved. I don't say this to your vanity, I don't even think you have any. But you should take a tooth or claw or something. Hell, I'd skin its hide and take it home if I were you, see if someone could make some kind of magic armor out of it for you. I'd empty my bag of holding for you right now and help you if you asked. But take something. We only came here for what was taken from us, and not to fight some terrible war. You are a champion today. A hero. Our champion. Our hero. You saved everyone here and we cannot give you the honors you deserve. But if a medal can be made from this thing, then I say you deserve it." 

Matilda runs into Mercion coming the other way around the corner. She hands Matilda back the horn, a concerned look on her face.

"That worked. It's just an animal – it's no talker. It can't get out. Window's closed. What's happening with the jabberwock?"

She touches Matilda on the shoulder, casting Death Ward upon her.

Ben:

His face turning red as an overripe tomato, Ben blushes at Horatio’s praise.  “Thank you, Horatio.  I was only doing what I thought I had to protect us all.  Surely Sune guided my hand, as well as perhaps this wishing gem,” says Ben shyly.

”Still, a souvenir would be nice, as long as it is not too gruesome, and some meat for the owl would also seem to be a kind thing to do,” he adds, looking at the Jabberwock and considering what might be best done with its carcass.
