Drawing his dagger, Ben takes a few steps after her but stops so as not to ruin her stealth. The scene looks like the trail of an errant wagon, and the groaning animal may be a trapped beast of burden--but there is no telling what they might find in this strange land. He peers into the foliage where she has gone towards the sound, prepared to rush to her rescue if she is threatened.

Matilda steps behind a bush and comes face-to-face with a large, bear-like creature. It has the head of an owl, and is yoked to a dilapidated chariot.
It stares at Matilda and growls, its muscles tensed.
Ben has a front-row view of the stand-off. He can also see that the chariot is empty, that there is nobody else visible nearby, and that the creature's harness boss is engraved with a branch of a juniper tree.

Matilda lowered her head and extended the back of her hand carefully, while speaking in a low, light voice*, " Hello, how are you? Would you like some help?".
*It worked sometimes on the neighbours hunting dogs...it might work on a big bear-bird thing....
Matilda wonders for a moment whether the creature likes the taste of Hag, but settles for giving it a scratch and asking Ben and Horatio in a soft voice to uncouple it from the wagon carefully.
" That wasn't very nice to leave you hooked up to this thing in these thick woods....you could get caught up and starve or die of thirst..."
She decides to worry about the care and feeding of such a thing at a later date....maybe the unicorn might have a suggestion....
Horatio pops into the clearing once beckoned, then freezes, eyes wide. "Uhh..." He carefully does as Matilda instructs, mouth agape the entire time as the beast is apparently tame.

Ben:
Also doing as Matlida requests, Ben looks carefully at the chariot, seeing if there are any identifying marks or if that pennant is helpful, then looking inside to see if anything or anyone is inside.

Titaani, bringing up the rear with a unicorn costume twice the size of her, drops it immediately upon seeing the creature.
”Aw!! You’re so cute!!” she squeals, rushing over and petting it. As she does, she switches to the languages of the woods that she used to talk to animals while growing up. “Would you tell us your name, beautiful creature? We’re your friends, although you probably already know that because Matilda over here has done such a good job at showing you we mean no harm. We want to help you. Are you lost? Where is the person who left you here, alone?”
(Titaani is using her racial feature here)
Meanwhile, Tiny sulkily picks up the costume. He regards the owlbear with a strong sense of jealousy.
(OOC: I hope everyone had/is having a good Christmas!)
Ben delicately disconnects the harness from the chariot. Examining it, it appears to be a badly-maintained but once-beautiful chariot, gold and brown, possibly of Elven make. It has no markings. The pennant depicts a rocking horse against a field of blue.
The owlbear looks at Titaani with suspicion and does not respond. (Alas, it is neither Small nor a Beast.) The Juniper branch emblazoned on its harness suggests one possible name.
(Everyone except Matilda should make an Animal Handling check to see how this monstrosity reacts to them!)

Ben:
"You know, this could be someone's current ride and they just left it here for a few minutes to answer the call of nature...We wouldn't want to start off discussions by being accused of trying to steal Juniper here," says Ben, looking for fresh tracks leading away from the chariot that might indicate a recent occupant.
Perception: 17
He mostly tries to be calm and not unnecessarily approach the creature, letting Matilda take the lead in dealing with it.
You catch sight of a small lake in the distance – what you can only presume, from the directions you were given, to be Wayward Pool.
Mist drifts over its surface. Forested crags line the shore on one side of the lake, and mossy rocks protrude from the shallows. Near the center of the lake is a rocky islet.
But as you approach the pool’s shoreline, you find that your path through the forest gets turned around somehow, and leads you right back to where you started.
Titaani follows along side the owlbear, before her path is turned around. She pauses for a moment, confused, and Tiny nudges her grumpily, still feeling a little jealous from earlier.
”Oh! Right! The pool!” Titaani snaps her fingers. “That’s right. Um...uh..let’s see what we can do...”
Titaani is going to use disguise self via mask of many faces (and I may be overly ambitious here) but she will try to make herself look like a bipedal unicorn, so when she gets onto her hands and knees she looks like a unicorn calf - she’s too small to be an adult one, even with the additional foot of height. Also, instead of adding a tail, which isn’t possible with the spell, she will have a stub that makes it look like her tail was cut off.
Seeing Titaani's disguise, Ben says, "Oh yes, it is that time," and slips into the front half of the unicorn costume. He will lead the way for the party to get to the lake...if someone will join him in the costume.

Ben and Horatio squeeze into the ridiculous costume, as Titaani does her best, arcanely, to transform into a strangely-convincing bipedal unicornoid.
They find that now they can approach the lake openly in their silly garb. Matilda and her new friend can watch, but she still cannot figure out how to direct herself to the pool's shoreline without getting oddly turned around again.
A steep rocky islet sits in the middle of the misty lake. Perched atop the islet’s highest point is an iron bowl filled with coals, as described by the kids. But getting to the islet in the middle of the lake will require crossing 250 feet of still water.

Ben finds no signs of other tracks, other than the mess the owlbear made when it crashed through the shrubbery.
It looks as though the owlbear, shorn of its chariot, is prepared to accompany you (or at least Matilda!)
Is everyone prepared to continue on to look for the Wayward Pool? Or do you have further business here? Shall the chariot remain where it is?
Matilda has already forgotten about the chariot and is excitedly telling her new friend about the unicorn they are going to meet...

Having seen nothing of use further, Ben says, “Come then, let us continue our journey.”
