Jhaarael's thoughts during the debrief:
Jhaartael listens to all the revealed information in ponderous silence. Spar and Duncan both missing. That is hard.
Mammon and demons? Curious.
Psionics? Interesting. That Nyblond and Duncan are both psionically gifted and now Duncan is missing, coincidence? Jhaartael doubts it.
At the least, we will have to work to protect Akyan as he may be a target. How different is psionics from his own ability to pluck, pull and entwine mental threads in the Weave? Or is it the same but simply from a different approach - like so many arts and sciences? Perhaps Akyan will deign to educate me.
Jhaartael retells what he remembers of Nyblond with multi-media presentation ((Feel Free to Read)):
As Krysaasks for a retelling of his memories, Jhaartael nods. Once all have said their piece, Jhaartael says, "Allow me to offer you what I can from my own memories."
Raising his hand he turns his wrist, like turning a key but in the ceiling, the lights in the room dim. He then gestures to a space to the left and behind him on the wall. The figure of Nyblond fades into view. Jhaartael begins to recount all of his interactions with the person he knows as Nyblond. When his memory comes to those points where Nyblond spoke to either Jhaartael or a member of the party that Jhaartael observed, the party hears Nyblond's voice saying the words as if coming from the image before them even though the image does not move. When he has completed recalling all that he can, Jhaartael says, "Perhaps that will help."
The image of Nyblond fades and the room lights glow to their former brightness.
Jhaartael will approach Akyan about learning more about his psionic abilities as well as Tamryn asking them both whether they have skill in forgery for he needs their advice for a formula if they do.
((Pending response of Akyan and Tamryn to said requests - could happen any time over the 3 days))
Day One - Jhaartael fills in his spell book and levels up ((Feel free to read)):
That evening, Jhaartael will retreat to the library. He will take out his Spellbook, the Libram and the one he borrowed. He will pause and linger in thought on the Libram, but hesitates to open it... too soon. What did they read in my mind? Are they watching? No, patience.... something more prosaic...
He takes up "Simon Magus' Magickal Manual: How to Win Friends (with Magic) and Influence People"and spends eight hours transcribing sleep, Tasha's hideous laughter, and gift of gab into his spell book. ((-100gp))
The wax from his candles running low, Jhaartael puts the finishing stroke on the last spell. Then he pauses and exhales with satisfaction. That was good work to refocus himself, after all the turmoil. He glances toward the Libram. "Tomorrow." Maybe. Cautiously.
He packs up his books, inks and papers with care. Extinguishing the candle, he heads to the barrack. Once he finds an empty spot, he secures his belongings, sets Artaquetië to rest and settles in to meditate -
He asks the Seldarine to shine light on his path, to not let him stumble or go astray, especially in the Weave, and to protect his team, to contemplate his current experiences in light of his decades of life experience and the teachings of his masters. - - -
His thoughts lead him to remembering his early studies. He recalls an older student who had been investigating an object that had been been brought to the library. The student had not prepared himself and was not able to recover from backlash from Weave. The student spent a month in recovery before they could even cast a cantrip again.
His thoughts lead him back to the Libram, both grotesque and ... beautiful ... Death does not trouble an elf. And even the elven dead are protected. In his minds eye, he sees the book as if lying upon the library table, then moonlight breaks through the window and casts her rays fully upon the book. Ah Sehanine Moonbow! A Corellon!
Day Two: Jhaartael has a date with the Libram in the library ((Feel free to read)):
He opens his eyes from his trance feeling refreshed. In his mind Series of symbols play continuously like letters made of moonlight. He grabs his pack, pulls out his spellbook and writing set and promptly writes what he remembers. Two new spells, clearly inscribed with full understanding open before him with fresh ink. He stares at them a while. Not what he usually received from the Seldarine when Corellon opened an aspect of the Weave to him. However, given the events of the past few days, certainly a blessing - perhaps, a light?
For a moment he thinks about the Libram ... or the mystery around his team. The team is safe... let me use these new threads to approach the Libram.
He heads to the library and finds a quiet corner. There he lays out his books again. Artaquetië sits upon a low perch and watches all his master does with quiet intent.
Putting his hands on each side of the Libram, he closes his eyes and contemplates his mind, how it works, how it feels, its strengths, its weaknesses.
((If he needs to spend an hour studying the book to become acquainted with it he will do so, then he will cast the following spell and spend another hour attuning))
He then utters "sanarosto". He opens his eyes and then the Libram, spending the next hour studying the book deeply to attune to it.
((I will pause here depending upon what happens.))
Akyan looks a bit surprised when both Mina approaches him. "I suppose I could--" He surprise grows when Jhaartael also asking for help. He wants to learn about his psionic abilities? Even after he himself just asked for guidance on that exact topic? "Well, that depends on what you want to know. I'm not sure I'd be able to explain it very well. I'm not even sure I completely understand it...." He trails off remembering the first time he discovered his abilities. "It something I kind of just do, it's become second nature to me, so I've never given much thought on how I do it. I can try to answer your questions, but don't expect a full on lesson." He pauses for a moment, realizing his last sentence may have sounded a bit rude. "As for forgery, I have a little experience with it, but I am not especially skilled at it. I can try to help you with it, but I can't guarantee the best results."
Kyrsa listens and watches the figure of the stranger that Jhaarteal had conjured up. Its irritating to think that she should recognize him, but at least now she can put a face to the name, even if her memories are still missing. Once its over she says, "Thank you, Jhaarteal. At least now I can somewhat fill the gaps." She pauses, running the new information through her head, "Do you suppose that there was any significance to him wanting us to stay for wine? I'm sure it could just be part of an act, but... well I'm wondering if its possible Nyblond isn't fully aware of what's going on either. If he's really... reanimated, could it be possible that he is following what he thinks are orders from the Circle, while he's really being used to gather intel on our team?" She shakes her head, "I'm just trying to think of every angle here. Especially since those documents seemed... well I just don't know what Team 1 would want them for. And even if they did want them for something...why not just take them themselves? If they are so powerful, they shouldn't need to trick us into getting them for them. I feel like this was some sort of test to determine our competence--which I find rather unsettling."
Once they are dismissed, Kyrsa hesitates as well, glad to see that Mina decided to tell Aldara herself. She'd been planning on bringing it up after the meeting too, but this is much better. She decides to wait with Mina, hoping to provide some support for her friend as she knows this is a touchy subject for her.
As they leave, she notices Jhaarteal and Mina asking Akyan and Tamryn for help with different things, and decides to put in her own thoughts as well, "While we might get 'better' instruction from someone else, it would be valuable for all of us to take advantage of each other's skills." She looks to Akyan, "I know you may have heard this before but, teaching is one of the best ways to learn. Besides, helping each other can also strengthen our bonds as a team, and help us continue learning to work together." She smiles, "So if you are willing, I would also like to learn how to pick a lock. I think this is something all of us could benefit from learning." She looks to Tamryn, "Maybe you could help with this too? And you too Lyndaran. You're all three skilled with lock picking if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps you can each tutor one of us? Provided Jhaarteal is also interested in learning this, which... I would highly recommend considering the amount of locks we've had to deal with already."
"As for psychic abilities..." She looks to Akyan, "I would be interested in learning how to shield myself from outside influence. I know you likely don't know how to do that yet, but perhaps it is something you'll learn from our Dragonborn friend. If you do, perhaps you can share that with the group?"
Additionally, she suggests that they ask about running themselves through another simulation to see how much they have improved since last time--and to get some more practice in. She also suggests that they take some time to spar together, to try to evaluate each other's strengths and weaknesses, and perhaps develop some strategies for whenever they find themselves in combat.
Listening to Akyan, Jhaartael is silent for a while. When he replies he begins in clarification, "Forgive me, I don't mean to suggest that I could learn psionics, as it is clearly something which requires aptitude and training. However, I am curious as to how it is similar and different from some magics. For instance, you can communicate directly, mentally with multiple parties, you can produce and control weapons of your thought. Spells do some of these things, but differently. As much differently in the doing as in the effect. We have heard how the other team's psionics could influence others minds. To do so, does a psionic need to overcome the others intellect or will? We have also seen how the other team psionics may be influenced themselves. Does the use of your ability leave you weakened or vulnerable? What could we do to help shore your defenses?"
To Kyrsa's suggestion that they study their strengths and weaknesses and begin to think how to best work together, Jhaartael nods. "Our enemies are only getting stronger, craftier. We will need to work together to accomplish our goals."
Akyan shrugs after Kyrsa finishes speaking. "If it's possible, then yes. I don't want to be the only one capable of shielding my mind if i can help it."
Once Jhaartael speaks up again, it's Akyan's turn to be silent for a moment, then he shakes his head. "I never said you couldn't learn psionics. I don't think it's my place to tell you whether or not you have the ability to do so. I never received formal training...or really any training regarding my abilities. I learned though trial and error. So, maybe with real training, anyone can learn psionics. I don't know much about how magic works either, I can cast a few spells but that is just due to my heritage..." He pauses as he thinks for a moment, "It is different, I'd guess that's mostly because psionics don't rely on one's ability to touch the weave." He pauses again, trying to figure out how to put his thoughts into words, then shakes his head slightly. He doesn't know what he's trying to say, maybe he will after he talks with another psionic adept. "I've never tried anything that would require me to overcome another's will. The telepathic link i can create certainly doesn't require anything like that. I just have to be able to see who I want to communicate with. I can speak to anyone even if they don't want me to, or there is a language barrier. I can only hold the link for a few hours, and I can only create new links about six times depending on if I use psionics for something else...like aiding my lockpicking abilities. I do not have those limits when it comes to summoning blades." He pauses again. "The only time I've experienced any kind of physical or mental drain, is when I helped Duncan erase the Sheriff's memories." He grimaces, thinking back on that experience, then looks back to Jhaartael wondering if his explanation was satisfactory.
At some point between day 2 and 3, Jhaartael will likely approach Kyrsa. "I know how frustrating it can be to doubt one's mind. I may have a means to restoring your memories. Corellon has granted me a spell which often works in such cases. My only hesitation is that I am unsure how it will fair against a psionic induced alteration. From my discussions with Akyan, it seems more likely that the enemy psionics also used magic, as psionics seem more 'active' than magic which is more 'substantial'. If it does work, I can recover the teams' memories. If it doesn't then I have one more theory", he says heavily, "before we give up that path of inquiry."
During the debriefing and Aldara´s speech Lyndaran remains in silence. He only approaches her once they are dismissed.
"Thank you" he says in his usual low and calm voice "For sharing with us the information. Would we had knew before perhaps we could have bring more light to this once we met Nyblond, but next time we will be more prepared. "
He listens to Jhaartael retale of the events and he seems to try to memorize Nyblond's face, voice and manerisms from Jhaarael recount.
"Perhaps " he points to Kyrsa's ideas "Even Nyblond is oblivious of the situation. I mean " he tries to elaborate when the attention is focused on him " Perhaps he was reanimated by the Team One, his own memories altered and he does believes that he is still working for the Circle. So that's why he didn't kill us and maybe our memories were altered by one of the Team One members for they didn't want to attract more attention and wanted to keep Nyblond's in secret for a little bit more. There are too many unaswered questions but we, as a tem "he says trying to include not only his friends but the more veteran members of the Cirle "will reach the bottom of it. "
"I am really worried about Spar and Duncan. "he adds on that topic "I would like to go back there and try to find them if the rest of you are ok with that "he says to the others "Anyway I will stay with the pack."
Once they are talking among themselves he says "Learning about how to shield ourselves for such attacks sounds like a great idea, but I would like to focus on training with my bow these days if you don't mind" he says to them "Of course I can teach you the bits that I remember of my youth about picking locks. " he offers " I could teach you Mina"he says a little bit abruptly when Kyrsa suggests that they could practice in pairs. "I mean... if you don't mind"
Once they start to walk back to get some food and resupply he stops Kyrsa, holding her by her forearm to catch her attention but he releases her as soon as she turns towards him.
"I wanted to apology. I said some harsh words that I didn't tryly feel. I guess that I panicked when I learned that someone had played with our minds and really freaked out when they threaten us. All of you is the closest thing I have had to friends since... a long time ago. " he turns and take a few steps towards the cliff his glance lost in the snow covered pikes " It was a long time ago, it was winter and the snow covered the woods and the mountains like this... We were in the woods, I was scouting but I didn't see them. I was the first to fall, left for dead in the snow. They took them. They... they didn't kill them outright, you know... these orcs really hate us, elves. When I woke up I tracked him and... I only was able to avenge them. I never thought I would have a pack again... a team " he corrects himself when he uses that word again " But here we are " he gives Kyrsa a shy smile "You are a good alpha Kyrsa, a good leader. You have good insticts and keep the interests of the rest of us in mind. " he looks her in the eye "I trust you."he says putting a hand in her shoulder. "About what you said. " he says not wanting to have that weight in his chest " I know that I may seem... harsh, even cruel sometimes. I am not. Nature is not cruel, even if it may look so to us sometimes. If a pup doesn't make it trought the winter that means that the rest will have more chances to survive. The wolves that hunt a prey does so they can feed their offspring and the whole pack. They do not enjoy the killing, but it must be done. I know that civilitation is much more complex than that but... I try to hunt down those who prey on the weaker and that do not have the strength or ability to defend themselves from them. I am a hunter, I am a killer yes, but even if I think the world is a better place without such scum I do not enjoy killing them. I hope you can understand "
When Lyndaran speaks up about Nyblond, Kyrsa nods in agreement, "Yes, I was wondering that too." She smiles slightly, "There are so many possibilities, and none of them are good. But yes, we'll figure it out somehow."
After the meeting, during the conversation with Akyan she says, "That's all I can ask. You can't teach what you don't know, or what is impossible."
To Jhaarteal she says, "If you think you have a way to restore our missing memories, then I am willing to take a risk to have them restored. I'll volunteer to go first, if there is any possibility that things could go wrong."
When Lyndaran stops her to apologize, she turns and listens quietly. Once he is done talking she gives a soft smile and says, "I took no offense, truly. Everyone was on edge, and I don't fault you for that." She pauses, looking worn, "Trust me Lyndaran, I understand those feelings. I understand how it feels to be...the sole survivor. It's something I've had to cope with a number of times to be honest, and I rarely was able to exact...revenge." She clenches her fists, then forces her hands to relax. Letting out a breath she continues, "Thank you. I must admit that I've felt..." She hesitates, realizing that Lyndaran had referred to her as 'alpha' and 'leader'. She blinks, and her small smile returns, "That puts me at ease, at least somewhat. I haven't felt like a good leader, and I honestly wasn't sure if it was right of me to try and act like one for our team. I...didn't want to impose authority that I don't officially have, but if you and the others trust me to lead our group I will do my best." She glances in whatever direction the rest of their group had gone off to, realizing she wasn't entirely sure why she was telling Lyndaran this right now. Still, she'd told Jhaarteal about Aldara's request, so perhaps it was time she let the others know. It would be easier for them all to work as a team if they had a set leader--whether or not that leader was her. It would make it less likely for them all to formulate and act upon their own plans. ...part of her wants to take command--it would be familiar, an old job she's done time and time again. Yet part of her would rather someone else take control--spare her the guilt when things go wrong. Then again, she also realizes that she'll feel that guilt regardless, that is just who she is.
To Lyndaran's last words she says, "Again, I understand. I don't think you cruel. How can I? I am a killer too." She exhales sharply through her nose, "Such is the life of a soldier. I don't enjoy it, and I know you don't either. But it is a sacrifice we make to allow others to live without that weight. We dirty our hands so that at least one person can live a better life."
The wood elf seems relieved by Kyrsa lats's words. He nods to her, glad to feel that friendship and understanding. In the next days he tries to spent time with every member of the group, he doesn't talk too much, but shares with them time.
As Lyndaran offers to help Mina learn how to pick locks, she brightens. She knows that in general their mission was a success, but so much weighed on her afterwards. Honestly, Spar and Duncan the most. She didn't know them well, but she really respected Spar and can't see him doing this on purpose. She doesn't understand.
"That would be great, can we get started now?" she asks eagerly.
"But of course..." says Lyndaran " Here let's take a look at what you are going to use " he says producing his thieve's tools and start explaining Mina how they work.
Finally she says, "I am assuming that Jhaarteal knows where it was that we met this... Nyblond. Did anyone search that location? For Duncan and Spar?" She pauses for a moment before continuing, "Thank you for sharing this with us. There are still many things that I don't understand, but at least this helps." She lets out a long breath, "It is a relief to know that none of us were affected aside from our apparent memory loss which..." She looks to Jhaarteal, "Perhaps we can supplement by having you recount your interactions with Nyblond so that we can get a better idea of what it is we are missing. I know you're probably tired of telling the story, but it could help us with trying to piece this together." ...
"I agree that we could all use a break," she says. "We can all benefit from training." She offers a small smile when Akyan asks for help honing his psychic skills, "Our team is getting better, but I think this is a good opportunity to make mistakes before going back into the field."
She pauses again, "I have... questions concerning Team 1... Of course, I hope we will not have to deal with any of them face to face anytime soon, but I must ask. Is it clear how much their abilities have changed since their corruption? You mention that they have increased in power, but I am talking more about their strategies and fighting styles--and their behavior. What I'm trying to ask is... what were their greatest strengths and weaknesses prior to their corruption, and are any of those traits still evident?" She hesitates, hoping that these questions are making sense, "Are they really completely different people then they were before? Or are there pieces of their old selves, habits they've developed that still come through? If not, then are they just puppets, dancing about as Mammon sees fit?"
Aldara nods as the questions begin to pour forth.
Turning first to Kyrsa, she replies, "Yes, we have sent a team to the chapel that Jhaartael claimed... er, testified was where he and Mina first encountered Nyblond. They have not yet reported back, but this is all very recent, so I am not worried. They are quite capable, and trained in psychic defense.
"I also have many unanswered questions about Team One. They were powerful when they were the flagship team of the DCL. One possible difference is that back then, they constantly were building their coordination and teamwork, so that they could anticipate each others' moves and combine their abilities into something they called 'synergy' that would boost the accuracy and power of their attacks. They were masters of misdirection, one of them drawing the enemy's attention, while another would deliver an unanticipated, devastating blow from a different angle. From what I have seen since their corruption, they tend to act more as individuals rather than a team now."
Mina is surprised when Aldara embraces her. ...she stands up, smiles at Aldara, "Thank you. For everything. I am sorry that we have now opened new wounds for you by finding Nyblond. Hopefully that mystery will be solved. And the one involving Spar and Duncan and that I do hope they are alright and still on our side."
Once they have been dismissed, she asks, "I would like to try to find out more about my brother if possible. Do you have any recommendations on where I should start? I think it would benefit us all for this to not plague my thoughts once we are back on a mission. Another thing I would like training on is how to pick locks... who can I see for this?" She then turns to Akyan and Tamryn, "unless one of you wants to show me?"
Aldara smiles back at the sea elf, brushing at her eyes a bit, but voice still strong and unwavering. "Of course. You are all a part of my family now, as much as my blood kin ever were. I understand the drive to learn more of your brother's motivations and his fate. You may continue to search for him, as long as you take care not to leave a trail back to the DCL, and as long as you do not abandon your team to go off on your own when they need you. If you leave your current family to search for a lost one, you may end up losing both. I hope you find the answers you are looking for, and I hope they do not disappoint you."
That was unpleasant, but not terrible. He was intrigued by the interrogator's techniques.

The wizard noted some more obvious techniques ("good constable, bad constable" and "divide and conquer" (separate your subjects and imply to them each individually that the others have confessed, and that if they do not admit to their part and rat out their friends, they will bear the brunt of the consequences))
Jhaartael will approach Akyan about learning more about his psionic abilities as well as Tamryn asking them both whether they have skill in forgery for he needs their advice for a formula if they do.
((If anyone wants to learn a skill outside of their normal class abilities, I'll say it will take 2 days of training, and you may add 1/2 of your proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any roll utilizing the particular skill))
Day One - Jhaartael fills in his spell book and levels up ((Feel free to read)):
All successful. Unless you really want to go all in on the psionic stuff and take a level of Aberrant Mind sorceror, but I'm not sure what your CHA is.
Day Two: Jhaartael has a date with the Libram in the library ((Feel free to read)):
As he opens his mind to attune with the book, Jhaartael feels its sentience reach out, and "bump up" against his intellect fortress. The Libram pauses, surprised, or perhaps amused, and then whispers, "Very good, you are learning to defend yourself, as I have protected you in the past. Shall we make a covenant, you and I, to continue to defend one another? I have great power to share with you. Together we can do much good. With our power combined, the enemies of the Circle will tremble to hear your name uttered..."
Of course, the easiest way to learn to pick locks, or forge documents, or any other skill like that is to use your new level in a new class, like rogue. However, if this doesn't seem like a good fit, then as I mentioned above, if you train for two days with a skilled teacher, you may in the future add half of your proficiency bonus, rounded down, to skill checks in that area).
"As for psychic abilities..." She looks to Akyan, "I would be interested in learning how to shield myself from outside influence. I know you likely don't know how to do that yet, but perhaps it is something you'll learn from our Dragonborn friend. If you do, perhaps you can share that with the group?"
I will share my thoughts on this (learning psychic defense) soon.
I can come up with a simulation if others are also interested.
Taking Kyrsa aside, he makes an odd gesture with his ringed hand, places that hand on her shoulder, closes his eyes and says "poitië"
"Now we will see if your memories return."
As Jhaartael gathers energy from the weave, and commands any magical curse to depart from his friend, he feels the threads of mana searching around Kyrsa for something to correct, some bond to release or chain to break, but the magic is ultimately unsuccessful His sense is that there is some alteration of the normal state of things, but that it cannot be reached through normal mystic channels. Almost as if it were in the ethereal plane, but not quite.
"I see," Kyrsa says as Aldara explains more about Team 1. "Interesting..." She doesn't say more, lost in thought. Perhaps if more ideas come to her she will bring them up later. She is also relieved at Aldara's reaction to Mina asking about her brother.
She is glad to see that her words to Lyndaran were well received, though finds herself a little disappointed when Jhaarteal's spell doesn't work. "I... still don't remember anything," she says hesitantly.
Later, she will ask Akyan if he can show her some basic lock picking techniques. She always has her hair pins, so why not learn how to use them for something other than holding up her hair?
Sometime that evening, when their group is all back together again, she says, "I asked if it would be possible for us to be run through another simulation like the one we were put through during our first day of training. Its possible, if all of you are interested." After a moment she adds, "I think it would be valuable to all of us, and we can practice coming up with a plan and working as a team. We did pretty well last mission all things considered, but there is still a lot of room for improvement..." She stops herself before she inadvertently starts lecturing. With a small laugh she says, "Anyways. It's up to you all. I can't very well ask for a simulation just for myself."

There are too many unaswered questions but we, as a tem " he says trying to include not only his friends but the more veteran members of the Cirle "will reach the bottom of it. "
"I am really worried about Spar and Duncan. " he adds on that topic "I would like to go back there and try to find them if the rest of you are ok with that " he says to the others "Anyway I will stay with the pack."
Once they are talking among themselves he says "Learning about how to shield ourselves for such attacks sounds like a great idea, but I would like to focus on training with my bow these days if you don't mind" he says to them "Of course I can teach you the bits that I remember of my youth about picking locks. " he offers " I could teach you Mina" he says a little bit abruptly when Kyrsa suggests that they could practice in pairs. "I mean... if you don't mind"
" he looks her in the eye "I trust you." he says putting a hand in her shoulder.

Taking Kyrsa aside, he makes an odd gesture with his ringed hand, places that hand on her shoulder, closes his eyes and says "poitië"
"Now we will see if your memories return."

"Then that's how we defeat them. Acting as a team. " replies Lyndaran with confidence.
PbP Character: A few ;)
Aldara smiles back at the sea elf, brushing at her eyes a bit, but voice still strong and unwavering. "Of course. You are all a part of my family now, as much as my blood kin ever were. I understand the drive to learn more of your brother's motivations and his fate. You may continue to search for him, as long as you take care not to leave a trail back to the DCL, and as long as you do not abandon your team to go off on your own when they need you. If you leave your current family to search for a lost one, you may end up losing both. I hope you find the answers you are looking for, and I hope they do not disappoint you."
