Akyan does not notice any traps on the "trap"-door, but the irony escapes him. The opening in the deck is covered by two large 10' x 15' hinged wooden flaps, which are opened by ropes attached to pulleys in the rigging. Together with Tamryn, the two pull the hatch open to reveal a large opening where cargo could be lowered down into the main hold. Unfortunately, the hinges are creaky and make some noise. A steep ladder leads down into the belly of the ship.
Akyan, Tamryn and Lyndaran descend into the cargo hold, their elvish eyes quickly adjusting to the gloomy darkness. This cavernous hold at one time could accommodate upwards of 60 tons of cargo in the ship's earlier days, but now much of the space has been filled with stacked rows of cramped bunks, with rusty manacles and shackles hanging down from most of them. You feel sick to your stomachs as you imagine this hold filled with prisoners, jammed and cramped, destined to be sold for lives of manual labor or worse. Over the years the stink of human suffering has lessened, but you feel a heaviness in the air, as if the spirits of those who suffered or perished on the miserable voyages of the Nightmare linger, unable to escape their servitude even in death.
Passageways between the rows of slave berths run fore and aft, each passageway ending in a door.
Up on deck, all is calm for the moment, the only sounds being the creaking of the ship as it gently rocks with the swells in the bay, and the calls of the sea-birds that search the bay for an afternoon snack.
Lyndaran tries not to feel sick as they descend to the hold of the ship. "Nightmare" was a proper name it seems. He clenched his left hand on the shaft of the shortbow, knowing that it would be hard for him to keep his word to Mina of keeping Aeric alive. He kept repeating to himself that she only has asked only for a brief time to ask some questions, which is both reasonable and doable. At least he hope it was...
He kneeled slowly in the dim light entering from the opening above to examine the floor, now knowing that there were fresh footprints to follow once Mina had pointed to them.
Survival; 22 rolled at the game log.

Akyan grimaces at the noise of the hinges, but continues down anyways. He quickly takes in the scene around him, frowning as he does so. He would never understand how anyone could do something like this to another person. Shrugging off the uncomfortable feeling emanating from the surroundings, he continues to search for any signs of recent activity.
Investigation: 18
As he looks he quietly speaks to his companions, "This is going to be difficult to do quickly without splitting up, but in our current state, I'm not to fond of that idea."
As the three elves search the cargo hold for clues, they sense, rather than hear, faint whispers and cries of pain coming from all around them. It might be the wind blowing through the leaky hull, but there seem to be words woven into the dank air. Release Us... Go Away... Mother!... (A whip crack)... Depart... Help!... You don't belong here... (Laughter)...
Lyndaran sees tracks leading down the forward passage, but also believes he detects an irregularity in the floor, perhaps a pressure-plate trigger for a trap. DC 14 Thieves' tools to disable or DC 12 DEX (Acrobatics) to Avoid it.
Feeling a cold shiver down his spine, Lyndaran mentally adds this ship to the list of places that needs a good arsonist. He silently promises to the poor souls that suffered here that he will do all in his power to stop the one responsible.
Silently, he puts his weapon back into the quiver and signal the others warning of the pressure plate using his hands.
He then produces a rolled piece of leather and pointing first to the plate, then to the tools and then to the others and finally to himself. It's easy for the others to understand that he is asking if they should try to disable the trap and if so, if any of them wants to try or should he do it.
"I say we just avoid them." Akyan replies quietly, "We don't have the time to disable them all, and if Aeric tries to make a hasty retreat, he may fall into his own trap."
Lyndaran nods and puts away the tools and takes the bow again as he tries to pass over the plate
Nat 1on the acrobatics roll: I KNEW IT!! hahahaha ( in the game log) We do not have any kind of inspiration don't we?
But as he is moving his leg over it, his quiver hits one of the chains dangling from above and somehow it gets trapped on it. The elf tries to free himself without touching the plate and he successfully plant his feet firmly on the floor at each side of the plate, barely avoiding setting the trap. But he is still trapped by the chain. He starts to get nervous and pulls of it, once, twice.. on the third pull the leather of the quiver is freed from the chain but stronger than Lyndaran has thought and he falls directly on the plate, his butt completely on top of it. He looks back to his comrades.
"Oh shit..." he says as he feels the pressure plate descending.
(Jhaartael is outside, musing about the different types of ships that have wound up here, wondering if he can perceive a pattern in their build and purpose, and imagining their old crews working upon them)
As Kyrsa, Mina and Jhaartael remain vigilant on the deck of the ship, watching for any sign of approaching enemies or escaping quarry, the winches which had been used to hoist the large doors leading down into the hold suddenly release. In fact, they seem to fall apart, rusty metal gears and cranks scattering across the deck. The cargo-bay doors fall back into place with an impact that causes the ship to rock unsteadily for a minute or two.
Below, as Lyndaran gracefully sticks the landing of his floor routine, a large fishing net of slimy rope drops from the ceiling, entangling him. (He is now restrained). Simultaneously, the cargo hold is plunged into full darkness as the heavy wooden panels above you slam shut, finally fulfilling their destiny as trap-doors.
Elvish darkvision is sufficient to see what has befallen Lyndaran, but as Tamryn and Akyan turn towards their comrade to assist him, they are startled to hear a child's voice from behind them, asking plaintively, "Have you seen my mother?"
Turning, they see a pale apparition approximately 30 feet away, a small human girl of perhaps nine years, clutching a translucent rag doll. Her feet do not touch the floor.

As the three elves gaze on the ghostly girl, before they can reply, another figure passes through the door at the opposite end of the hold. Literally passes through, without opening it. This second floating figure is of an adult human male, dressed in a rotting sea captain's uniform, dripping ethereal liquid, the flesh of his face shrunken and hollow against his skull beneath. The new ghost spies the girl and says, "Arrr, there ye be, ya minx! Thought ye could get away, did ye? Not on me watch! Back to the pen wit' ye, ye'll not be escapin' today!"
The girl whimpers for a moment, and then a disturbingly wide smile revealing long sharp teeth splits her face. "Not this time, you filthy pirate. Today, I will make you suffer!"
The two apparitions begin to slowly circle one another, seemingly oblivious to your presence. Seemingly.

Lyndaran stands up and grabs his Shortbow not even been able to talk. He wasn’t ready fue that and was certainly scared by the apparitions but the rage he felt before against the slavers came back to him. Not even in death would they leave the children alone? He notched an arrow and aimed at the goshtly Captain

Kyrsa staggers backwards as the doors slam shut, only to rush forwards before the boat was finished rocking. "Blast... What were they doing down there?" She attempts to lift the cargo doors saying, "We don't have time for this. If there was anyone here before, and they didn't already know we were here, they definitely know we are here now."
Akyan cringed as Lyndaran falls flat onto the pressure plate, but is relieved that it only released a net rather than something more lethal. He starts to step forward to help his companion just as the little girl's voice sounds from behind him. He turns around confused, there shouldn't be any children on this ship. Then he sees her.
"Um, I-" His words are cut off as the slaver captain phases through the door. Not that he knew what he was about to say anyways. Hoping Lyndaran can escape the net on his own he adopts a ready stance and summons a psychic rapier. He'd never dealt with ghosts before, but from what he's heard, he's hoping his blades would be more effective than simple steel.
"Let's send this bastard down to the burning pits where he belongs." He mutters to his companions, "Hopefully we can deal with this quickly. I'm sure if Aeric is here, he knows that we are here too. That door wasn't exactly quiet."
Rethinking his choice of weapon, the glowing green rapier in his hand shifts into the form of a hand axe. Summoning a second blade in his left hand, he throws them both at the ghostly captain.

As he does this, he creates a telepathic link with Kyrsa, "We might need help down here. Aeric isn't the only on using this ship if he's here at all. There are two ghosts down here with us, only one seems particularly hostile, hopefully we only have to deal with that one."
"Ghosts? ...Wonderful..." Kyrsa says aloud as she pulls upwards on the trap door. Realizing its a telepathic link, she responds through her thoughts, "We are coming, just hang on."

Mina helps Kyrsa try and lift the cargo doors and pauses a moment when she says ghosts outloud. Just looks at her quizzically, then back to helping her lift the door.
