"We need not worry about returning to the portal," Sam corrects Vin. "Assuming the load stone we get can fit into the bag we can send it right back to Hog who is being held by the Treasury awaiting such. Our presence shouldn't be needed at home within the timespan assuming they get the load stone just fine. Unless we need rescue our House Mage from the Treasury Goons..."
"Although... In the telling it does occur to me we have not transferred living things though it. Well, I guess old dragon bones are formally living things. And we have moved parchment and wine that way so it should work... Right?" Sam isn't sure if he is convinced or not though.
"Or it could just be haunted," Sam says a bit later in counterpoint to Muir. "Some spots are just... wrong. The hows and whys differ but it happen..." Sometimes something so horrible is done in a spot that it is just cold there forever, Sam thinks to himself. The Block Fire Memorial is the image in his head and an uncontrollable shiver runs up and down his spine.
As the group get further and further away from the ruinous headquarters, the streets once again get dirtier and more overgrown, the patrols of guards become less as the group descend into the bowels of the isle. The frequency of people laying out on the streets and begging also raise as does that smell once again.
The group begin to stick out somewhat in spite of their cold weather cloaks. There is a bit of shouting up ahead and as you all round a corner. A genasi is holding a dragonborn up against a wall further down, holding a blade up to the norm and yelling something unknown. Those around the conflict begin to move away hurriedly, knocking into a few members of the group.
Both Sam and Gewyn (with their passive perception) feel something lifted from their person as the few people come rushing through the group.
Griff cocks his head over his shoulder and addresses the group, "we are not needing to get involved with this petty argument, it is likely just being a distraction for something else that could be going on. It is being best to avoid it."
"Hmm?" Sam mumbles and quickly pats himself down to check his belongings... "%#@&!" Sam calls out upon realizing his bag is missing.
"Fetch home!" he immediately orders Órga and Molly and Brownie. The animals ears all perk up and with sniffers and eyes on high alert they all start pushing forward in the direction same is pointing, that of the fleeing bystanders, one of which is a thief! As Sam is ordering the animals and sending them after their home Sam himself is scanning the crowd for the dead man (or woman) who is fleeing away with Sam's Bag of Tricks... And Sam is growing. The normally big Orc is now LARGE and moving toward the direction he supposes the thief is...
(Bonus Action direct animals, Action activate Giant's Might to embiggen... Movement to head in same direction crowd that passed him is heading. If he does spot the thief he will happily use Action Surge to attack this round.)
"Who are you calling a goon?" Elthana demands when Sam talks about the Treasury. She knows her faction is not seen in the best of lights and in some ways understands it, but it is still her faction.
Turning to Muir, "For what we have seen and dealt with lately, I am surprised by your outlook on what the haunting might mean. Either way, it is best to be ready for the worst. Time is not our friend and we don't need to spend some of it dealing with whatever is hanging around."
Seeing the situation with the genasi and dragonborn, she is a bit torn, but follows Muir nonetheless, this wasn't their fight. "How much further?" she asks Griff.
"Who are you calling a goon?" Elthana demands when Sam talks about the Treasury.
"Umm, did I mention that Hog said that Treasury goons forced him to leave our house and go with them to the Treasury?" Sam replies. "Them. They're who I'm calling goons. Obviously there's some good Treasury people... But forcing someone from their home? That is goon behavior, no?"
((I'm assuming this exchange is before the Genasi v Dragonborn scene and thus also before Sam is the victim of some goonish thief... who may or may not be from the Treasury.))
(the goon exchange is very much before the conflict, but before Elthanas can respond the commotion draws everyone's attention)
As Sam enlarges his head nearly touches the ceiling, and the people making their way away from the conflict begin screaming and trying to move faster, some jump to the walls or ceiling themselves to ease the glow of rushing crowd and make their way quicker, but Sam is locked on to one person that he has spotted, not letting them out of his sight.
Spotting a dirty greenish-cloaked miscreant stash the bag and attempt to wander off as if nothing happened, Sam clicks his tongue to call the animals to him even as he himself runs after the thief. Having embiggened himself (action) Sam uses his action surge (assuming Sam can get into range this turn) so as to also be able to grapple them before they can get away.
Athletics (Grapple) Check (w/advantage due to Giant's Might): 17, 8 +8 for 25
With his second attack from this action Sam just straight up punches them in their goon face!
Unarmed Strike:10 to hit, 6 bludgeoning damage plus 11 extra damage from Giant's Might and if this hits (which I doubt with a 10?) Sam invokes his Fire Rune to do an extra 10 Fire Damage and the thief must succeed on a DC 14 Str Save or be restrained for 1 minute. (While restrained they take an extra 2d6 Fire Dam at the start of each of their turns and can attempt save at the end of their turn...)
The animals encircle and wait for the signal... and hold their attack for when they get it?
Muir turns around and sees Sam enlargen himself and order his flock after a thief. Muir panicks and checks his own things and then realizes he has nothing to steal small enough that he wouldn't notcie, besides the moss. He was about to say something to Sam but decides to stay out of the frackus unless Sam needs his help
Watching Sam go pretty much berserk, Vin takes in the scene and a little stupefied.
"Is this normal for Sam?", he asks those still standing with him. As he sees Muri check his belongings, he gets an inkling of what must have happened, and checks his own pockets and pouches.
Elthana is ready to move on when she hears and sees Sam engage with one of the locals. Realizing what is going on and man.. he better give up that sack or die holding onto it she thinks, she looks through her own items quickly before stepping up to see if she needs to intervene. Though she doubts it.
Muir nods "Yes. Sam has a very strong sense of right and wrong. This person who has pickpockted him is clearly wrong, and Sam won't let him get away with it. The funny thing is if the person had asked Sam directly for aid, he probably would have given it, but alas here we are. Whoever the thief is will get a beat down from Sam. Does he need our help? No, no he doesn't unless more the thieves friends shows up...Then we will intercede."
Gewyn spins around to look after the pickpocket. Seeing Sam barging through, leaving a large wake in the crowd, Gewyn braces himself and concentrates. His cloak flairs out behind him dramatically, and then he is falling through the air sideways, through the gap in the crowd behind Sam, and sailing just over his head. He skids to a stop on the ceiling just behind Sam and says, "Good catch, big guy." (Bardic inspiration) "He's got something of mine as well."
"Whoa, too late to wait", Vin exclaims as Gewyn seemingly flies down the street. On hearing Gewyn has also had something taken, he checks his own belongings a little more thoroughly.
"Well, I don't think they have taken anything from me. Unless it is something I don't remember having".
Neferox cocks her head to the side and then looks up to Vin, as if wondering if she should join in, but not wanting to leave his side. After a couple of seconds, she turns her gaze to the crowd, looking around at those nearby.
Neferox smells something and barks to Vin, darting off towards Gewyn. She springs up the wall and then to the ceiling and as she passes Gewyn she knocks him in the legs and barks once more, continuing past him it seems she has her sights on another target. Also in dark green robes but dirtier and torn at the bottoms.
The cloaked figure in Sam's grip does indeed take the punch, a sickening crack rings out as the hood crumples a little further than it should have done, suddenly the cloaked figure is trapped within firey restraints, and the smell of burning feathers stings the noses of the group. The stolen bag drops to the floor, but nothing else.
The genasi and the dragonborn suddenly stop their shouting as they see Sam enlarge, they drop their charade. The distraction having worked but their plan having gone seriously awry. They begin to bolt in the opposite direction.
As Neferox darts off Vin stops patting down his pockets and heads off after her.
"Nef has eyes on another thief, Gewyn. The one that has your blade. Follow her", he calls as he darts along the ground, hoping he can get through the gap left by Sam without having to use the walls and ceiling.
After a moment of dashing, he pulls up and simply watches Neferox. Before looking back at Elthana and Muir.
"I think she has it in hand, or paw. Probably jaws eventually".
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Muir looks at Elthana and Griff "I feel as though this is normal behavior for these parts" Muir looks around and watches people move out of the way but not getting involved Muir lets out a large sigh "I do hate to get involved but their punishment could be to aid us where we need aid...They seem to know the area and have probably pulled of heists like this before" and with that he tries to thorn whip one of the ones who have bolted to run...
Sam quickly bends and picks up his bag and gives it a careful look to ensure it is indeed the same bag, then he turns his eyes to his captive. "You alive?" Sam asks, poking the person roughly in the belly to try to get some kind of reaction.
If alive, Sam uses his free hand to start grabbing anything the captive has and dropping it to the ground - Weapons, sacks, pouches, anything that looks like it could be anything. Sam is also using this time to try to determine just how alive this person is - are they last legs and the restraining fire could be too much? Are they still struggling and maybe need another punch for good measure? ((Insight? Perception? Same roll: 20))
If non-alive, Sam sets them down and calls out to Muir. "This one could use some healing... Right quick!" he calls, not overly upset the thief is dead but preferring to not be a fugitive in a strange land. Probably best not to kill if it can be avoided. Sam would also still try to quickly strip the thief of anything that could be anything as well as try to stop the Fiery Restraints. (It doesn't specify they can be dropped at will but *shrug*)
The animals mill around, anxious and excited but devoid of further orders yet...

“Maybe they have abilities to create illusions like the Captain”, Vin adds after having watched even more appear.
“I guess if you were living in enemy territory then keeping the locals too scared to approach would be a pretty good tactics”.
