Vin looks across to Neferox who is taking no interest whatsoever.
"Yeah, she certainly is special", is all he says on the matter. "As for whether they can enter trees, I am not absolutely sure, Sam mentioned some kind of tree spell. I will be honest and admit I don't remember what he is talking about, if I ever knew", he adds looking across to Sam, who has already started explaining anyway.
"Weren't you?" he asks, a bit more unsure. "Eh, maybe it was before the... You know..." And at that he kind of lets his head drop to one side as he rolls his eyes up in his head and lets his tongue loll out of his mouth. "Yeah, maybe you forgots it... But yeah, Muir made like a door in a tree and could walk through it into some little druid paradise room or something."
"That sounds really cool, and a bit like the bar in the tree where we visit Morris", Vin replies to Sam, while grabbing a plate of food and looking for something Neferox might like too. "I wish I could remember, but I guess it is Muir that I struggle with memory wise, so it does make sense".
Vin delivers some food to Neferox, who regards it curiously for a few moments before trying it and then tucking in.
"I've met loxodon before" mireah interjects, "they've shared similar mannerisms, the curiosity, the search for information and then remembering it all. Though he's more speculative than those I've met, no wonder you struggle with him, I think I'd have difficulty after a while of receiving constant information." After a while, of thought mireah hesitantly asks, "what's Morris like? This aspect of death you spoke of the one who gave Gewyn a blessing..."
It seems like there is more to what mireah is asking, but unclear what her specific curiosity is.
Elthana emerges from the tree that Nef had sniffed out earlier and stretches. Seeing her friends nearby, she saunters off towards them. "Man, even Sam has had a bath? I need to find a chance myself. Did you all just get out from breakfast?"
"Morris? Plenty of time to talk about Morris," Sam says. "You never really got an answer about Neferox.... You said 'she's... a special dog.' Well, she sure is! I think Vin should tell you more about her... After all, you have been such a kind and generous host and fixed his broom and all, it's only right he return your kindness with answers..." Sam has long ago just accepted Neferox for whatever the hell Neferox is but he was sensing a chance to create some mischief here so he couldn't help himself. Besides, answers about the dog the Muir wasn't around to hear? That's a two birds with one stone scenario!
And with that thought Sam turns and looks guiltily at Griff for a second but then shrugs - He can't read thoughts.
Before anyone can answer, Hootie comes flying back to Sam. Before the little owl can so much as give a hoot Elthana is walking into view. "Some watch owl you make!" Sam mutters and Hootie vocalized a raspberry as best they can before it gives Sam a flyby then u-turns to fly over to Elthana and land upon her shoulder. Sam scowls at the bird but then quickly smiles at Elthana and her return.
"Well there was room for two," he jokes then looks over to Vin and Neferox and Mireah to see if anyone is talking...
"this is true.." mireah begins, looking interested at neferox, who lifts her head and sneers at Sam. "Obviously she's a fiend and not exactly subtle about it but she's not a hell hound right vin? Too powerful for that, too... Intelligent. We used to get hounds breaking into the wylds every so often and the wylds would protect themselves as they do, it was... Nature, I suppose." Mireah says but gets a low grumbling growl in response.
"Hmmm? Are you cursed neferox?" She asks, and Nef's ears perk, she looks over to vin asking something but her face conveys a grumpy restraint.
Vin gives Sam a look that is a mixture of surprise and irritation, as the half-orc decides to interject himself into the conversation about Neferox and stir the pot.
"I am obviously grateful to you", he says to Mireah carefully. "And I will say that Neferox saved my life when I was young and we have a very strong bond. But as Sam well knows, she does not share details about herself willingly to anyone she doesn't trust, and she only trusts me, so....", he continues with a slight shrug to apologise for the bad news.
"I guess that might be why Sam is trying to force the issue, because he has yet to earn her trust and is ever so curious. Almost as curious as Muir it seems", he says with a little bit of bite.
And then he notices Elthana's return, and breathes a sigh of relief.
"Have you been with Muir all this time? Needed some private time together?", he asks.
Sam narrows his eyes and he eyeballs the kid a bit, but he knows what he is up to. Sam refuses to be distracted from the topic, however.
"And how does one earn the trust of a fiend?" Sam asks in retort. "In the time this group has been together we've saved one anothers lives countless times... Pulled you back from death, and you're her best friend... Yet she still trusts nobody but you, right? And if she can't trust the rest of the party then how, pray tell, are we supposed to trust her? With our lives in battle or our necks as we sleep? It's not good, I say... A group such as ours, trust can be more important than weapons or armor. They've shown themself to be intelligent enough, after their fashion, but they refuse to learn the necessity of trust. Make's one think it is deliberate. That it's not that she cannot trust but that she chooses not to..."
Vin half listens to Sam whilst looking with concern at Neferox, but does take the time to reply.
"What do you think it means, Sam, to be a fiend? To live where a fiend lives and to be around other fiends. Do you imagine there is a lot of trust there? You don't trust her, she doesn't trust you. Who is most capable of breaking that pattern?", he says with a sadness to his words.
"Think about it", he adds and walks out, motioning for Neferox to follow him, which she does.
"I think what it means to be whatever you are is up to the individual. I think if one wants to be different or more or..." Sam begins but trails off when Vin walks away and summons his little dog to do the same. Seems it's not just the hound who wants to be separate and apart from the group... A shame too, Sam had been thinking he was really becoming friends with Vin. Making inroads with Neferox as well. But Sam shrugs and turns away from them. You can't help anyone until they want the help, he supposes. Can't truly become friends or family with those who want neither.
"Private time? What do you mean? We've only been gone about 30-45 minutes, just enough time to get his mentor up to speed. She can visit him in that tree thing, you know?" But it seems her reply lays on deaf ears as she didn't realize what she had stepped into. She watches Vin walk away with Nef after some sharp words between him and Sam. She isn't sure what to say and then Sam turns away as well.
She looks to Gewyn and asks, "What's going on here?"
Mireah gives a knowing look to Hector who nods and hesitantly follows vin out though keeps his distance, just before hector leaves too he puts a gentle hand on Elthana's shoulder and says "nothing too serious don't worry, I'll pop back in a minute, we should think about moving soon."
"Perhaps she is also long lived." Mireah says to Sam with a shrug, "like I said before it... changes, how a person thinks. gewyn might go through the same thing depending on his choices with the triskelion, it's possible that he could outlive you all, and generations of your descendants after."
Mireah laughs in the unintentionally mocking way that teenagers sometimes do, but flashes a smile at Sam and retorts, "I think long lives more often spoil people and make them wrong, do you think I'm a wrongun Sam, a waste? I suppose I might be actually, when I think about it, not evil but..." She trails off a bit, the wind taken out of her sails.
"You been helpful to us..." Sam admits. "To me. But honestly can't say as I know you well enough to be sure. You're abandoning things did kind of bring about Rynwell and her chaos... And you did do something I don't quite understand to Gewyn, seemingly a bit recklessly... But no. I don't think you're a 'wrongun' or 'evil' but I suspect maybe there's a certain kind of aloofness which sets in to any who live too long. Seems to me that maybe they stop caring about life as a whole and instead... Ah hell, what do I know? I'll likely die in a fight long before I live to an old age of 60 or 70 so..." Sam shrugs and goes to look out over the waters of the pond and not think about anything for a while.
"you? Nahhh, you've got an aura protecting you Sam, a second soul attached to your own, she must have wholly loved you without condition, especially for her to be helping you even now. It's actually the same flavour of power I gave to Gewyn though the consequences were unknowable, I don't exactly regret it, but I wish I would have known all the aspects first..." Mireah does offer Sam a glad smile, happy he doesn't think she's all that bad.
Sam takes that in without comment. It does flavor his thoughts as he stares out over the water and contemplates but, for a change, he keeps his mouth shut.
Hector comes bustling back in, and takes a seat with a sigh. "Vin, Neferox and Muir are just outside, once we're all together again I think we should figure out if there's anything else to do before getting a move on and saying our farewells... Ömertyr should have finished his preparations by the time we return"
"Hmm?" Oh," Sam says, slowly coming out of his reverie and realizing what Hector is saying. He takes a moment to stretch a bit, his muscles and tendons less dried out now, more or less back to alive status. "Yeah, sounds good. I think I'm ready..." Still, nothing was done for Elthana, was it? He had been hoping Mireah might be able to actually help her somehow. She seemingly helped everyone else... But then again it's really not his place to step in. He had nudged them in that direction, he can't really do more.
