"Yes, the pins have been given to our staff," David replies. "We have yet to give it to the Lady's own staff," he adds, looking a bit wary at his brother.
"No, no, that's good," Daven nods grimly, "don't give the lapel pins to my wife's staff. Good thinking, David. She is my wife, true enough, but I have noticed something suspicious about her spending. Last month's financial statement is larger than usual with funds being taken from the Pedrov's trust account. She is planning something and I fear it will impact my dearest daughter."
"The task group that the Mayor assembled has yet to find a suspect," Daven says to Drexon's enquiry. "But -- and this is a rather strong but -- some of the younger members, like that Guilleman, have been throwing some rumours that will eventually lead the Mayor to the Scarlet Barony. As a Clarent, I know how good the Barony has been to the people's morale in the neighbourhood, and blatantly attacking the warehouse district for no reason is not their style."
Cob watches the morning preparations with growing interest.
"I'm thinking about hanging out at the front gate this morning," Cob says. "I might be able to distract or scare any group making for the gate or wall if I can see what they're up to. Might be my best chance of meeting this master thief as well."
Drexon is pretty tight lipped around Lord Daven, not wanting to say too much about the Scarlet Barony and the masons apprentices. It was obviously a set up, and he was happy he had warned Maya. He does note the name Guilleman though.
Instead he focusses on the task at hand, "Well whatever happens, I will be sticking close to your daughter today. Although she can likely take care of herself anyway".
"Zelena will not like that, but she will understand," Daven says to Drexon.
"Ah, yes, I did hear about that myself," Daven nods to Cob. "They say Lupa Kanginan is in the city. Well, I do not think the estate has something they want. The only thing of note that could draw their interest is the missing Sword of Dawn, but we haven't been able to recover or even know where it was lost for decades. Still, there should be many places of interest for the Master Thief. I'm not too worried. They are stealing for the thrill and not for the value of the item. From what I hear, the harder the vault, the more exciting it is for them. They always return what they stole after some time."
"Well, if there's nothing else, I will leave you gentlemen to your work," Daven says after a while. "Zelena is still preparing in her room. You can wait here or wait by the front door of the family suite. The guests should be arriving any time soon."
{{Don't mind this. I'm just going to randomly roll a d4: 4.}}
"Ah, you've met him, eh?" Daven says with a grimace. "Uncouth fellow, that Julian. His younger brother, Fenton, is a little bit more sensible but still has that arrogance of new money. Still, they are a well-connected pair. The fact that Julian could sit in the Mayor's task force without proper introduction and qualification, even taking the position that should have been filled by the head of commerce, speaks volumes."
Before any of you leave, David gives each of you an armband with the symbol of a golden sun. The shape is reminiscent of the motifs you've noticed appearing several times throughout the manor. Remembering back to the first time you entered the estate, you know that the symbolism refers to the Light Bearer or the Illuminated Papacy, the religion worshipping the Light Bearer.
"I would like for you to wear a formal garment, but then that would hinder your work," David says, handing over the armbands. "Put this on you. The estate guards that are patrolling the manor are also wearing it. It shows to the people that they are commanding the security and approachable for help if needed. I know it's better if nobody knows of your duty, but there are no other people who will be carrying weapons except for the assigned bodyguards. This way, we can disguise as a new recruit for the estate and you don't appear out of place in a formal event wearing your armour and weapon."
”Should you prefer, I do have a suit that I can change to. I don’t necessarily need to carry any weapons on account of the claws.” Eremoz demonstrates by showing his claws.
"Very well, then," David says with a nod. "It also appears only Mr Eremoz and Mr Ekorin visibly carry their weapon. We can work with that. I will notify the staff that you will be in as a guest and treat you as they would a guest."
After a while, a staff runs into the dining room to inform Daven and David about the first guest's arrival. You are left to your own devices as Daven and David leave to greet the guest. Slowly, over the next half an hour until eight, the guests come either on foot or driven by horse-less chariots.
The guests begin mingling among themselves almost immediately, congregating together to create cliques. You note Daven grouping around other smartly dressed people. You recognize one of them as Ulric Emika, your gambling partner a few days ago. In other parts of the manor, you see Amarr Aruetii, the warehouse landlord and also your gambling partner a few days ago, standing with other like-minded people and talking about some sort of warehouse contract. David, as custodian of the estate, can be seen running around between groups and interacting with the staff, but he is mostly seen near Lady Reva when she comes.
The atmosphere of the event changes when the Mayor comes in with his retinue. You can feel a tenseness in the air from most of the people already there when they see the Mayor walking in without his official guards but with Julian Guilleman, Fenton Guilleman, and Hotis Garaton. Behind him, two strange-looking people in yellow, almost amber, armour stand guard. The strange sight is quickly forgotten by the main event of the day.
When the clock strikes 8.30, the crowd quiets down and looks at the grand hall door. There, Lady Zelena Clarent, the heiress of House Clarent, stands wearing a sun-yellow dress. Her hair is arranged beautifully and artistically to resemble a golden halo. You, and only you, note the metallic cylinder strapped to her lower back, hidden away by the frills of her dress.
"My dearest daughter," Daven says, holding a glass of wine and further quieting the manor. Around the manor, the staff begins catering finger foods and drinks to the guests. "Seventeen years ago, I held in my hand the most precious thing in the world and thought that I had become the luckiest man in the world -- a father. But, since then, you have exceeded all of my expectations. You have grown to be a kind and understanding young woman. I am proud to be your father. Happy birthday, Zelena! Today is for you!"
The crowd applauds and begins singing a merry song as they are herded into the grand hall. Music starts playing and Daven takes Zelena's hand for a first dance. The rest follows with their own partner after the first song ends.
As the festivities start, your patrol brings you to the sight of deliberate sabotage. Less than one hour into the party, you already have to subtly cart away a couple of troublemakers who deliberately try to make a mess of the event. Eremoz, you have to grapple with a young man who is trying to make a pass to the younger women at the party. Drexon, you have to discreetly change the topic of conversation in your own little group to defuse a tense situation that stemmed from an opponent of the Mayor's companions and a proponent. Cob, your patrol around the gate makes it easier for you to point at large suspicious groups trying to surround the gate and wall. Once or twice you have to physically interact with some groups to ask their purpose, but often enough it is only a case of curiosity because of the many important people coming.
{{If you want to interact with someone directly, let me know.}}
Drexon will stick close to Lady Zelena as agreed previously, reminding her of this fact if she complains or tries to ditch him. He will take note of those who make the most effort to gain access to Lady Zelena, asking her to let him know by some subtle gesture if she would like any individual to be politely removed from her presence.
Drexon, as you are staying close to Zelena, you start to notice certain things. Zelena flits from one teenage group to another with the occasional stops at the more adult groups. The first thing you notice is that Zelena looks uncomfortable in the crowd but pushes through it with a tightly controlled smile and posture. The second thing you notice is that most of these people are trying to curry the favour of the family by directly going to Zelena instead of Daven, most probably thinking she is more 'reasonable' than her father. At one point, Zelena passes by the Mayor's group and doesn't stop to talk. Instead, she goes near a window and looks out, nodding after a moment before moving to other groups. When you look out the window, you notice a figure standing on a rooftop wearing a red cloak flashing some light signal with what is most probably a mirror.
As the party goes on, all of you also start to hear interesting rumours. The first is the progress of the new tower that is being built in Timaril is near its completion and will be ready for the Tears of Tuada Meteor Shower on the 1st of Dawnlight. The Verdant Mason is congratulated for being the most prominent contributor and donator for the project. The second is the tales from the East. It is rumoured that the town of Erdelun was attacked a few days ago by a large group of bandits, but the Rangers and the City Guards managed to repel the attack. Many of the people talking about this surmise that it could be connected to the attack on the warehouse district. The third is the anticipation of the upcoming Hollow Night festival in Vortesso, which promises would be the largest one since a few decades ago. Reva Khazan takes the compliment of her husband's company being chosen to cater the festival, but she only gives a brief nod to each person who brings the matter up.
{{Important question: who is the most likely to sample the finger food and drinks?}}
Kriv wanders the party mingling with various guest a bit in order to blend in. Seeing Julian and the others, he decides not to call any attention to himself and continues on with his rounds. As he does, he makes quick checks with the tower guard and the guards at the front dooors.
When Drexon sees Lady Zelena looking out the window, and notices the red cloaked figure signalling followed by what appears to be a reaction from her, he is more than a little confused. He watches her closely trying to determine her purpose and mood. He also looks for one of the others to telepathically link to.
"Red cloak on the rooftops to the [whichever direction]. Signalled Lady Zelena, something is going on. Tell the others and suggest Cob checks the rooftops", he says telepathically.
Depending on his insight into her motives, he might confront her directly.
Insight: 6+5=11 (Passive: 15)
(OOC: Drexon is trying to blend in as a guest, so likely will be trying the food. Just enough to avoid suspicion though)
Drexon, Zelena moves swiftly out of the grand hall room after talking with a few friends. She walks briskly toward the family side of the manor, opening the door that glows a faint red and entering it in a quick stride. The door is left open, and you hesitantly follow her. So far, you have not experienced the pain that blood magic promised.
When you follow Zelena in, you can see her undressing her dress haphazardly. She ignores your presence and redresses herself in a more practical outfit, fit for a horse ride out but still formal enough for the party. Her countenance is serious and grim, anticipating something only she can perceive. Just as she is about to come out of the family room and rejoin the party, she stumbles and gasps.
"Oh, so that's how," Zelena says before dropping to a chair. "Did you sample the food and drink?"
At the same time, Eremoz, you walk out to see Cob flying around the gate and the wall perimeter. As far as you both know, there is nothing amiss with the perimeter. The neighbourhood has been behaving themselves. Apart from one or two groups of curious people, it has been rather quiet. The guards manning the watch tower also say the same. Once or twice they report seeing red-cloaked individuals running across the rooftops, but the red-cloaks haven't been making a move except helping the guards herding the errant people away from the estate.
Yet, you cannot really relax. You know something is amiss. Something is happening behind the curtain. You are only waiting for the other shoe to drop. And as the second hour of the party rolls in, you feel the other shoe drops.
{{So, whoever samples the food or takes a drink, roll a Constitution saving throw for me. Dvark and Karm, if you don't post until the end of the week, I'm taking control. I'm not sure the plot armour will be strong enough to ensure survival if that is the case.}}
On hearing Lady Zelena mention signals from the red cloaked figure, Drexon sticks close to Lady Zelena, watching any entrances as she re-dresses.
"I did have some food and drink yes", he replies, feeling slightly queasy. "But I don't feel too badly. Do you think the food or drink were poisoned? Is there any anti toxin in the house?".
"Also, is it your will that allows me in here? Can you bar all others?".
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cob flies across the street and settles on to one of the higher rooftops and looks back over at the manor and compound, seeing if this different perspective reveals anything else to him.
Perception: 9
If he doesn't spot anything worth checking out, he flies back to the compound wall and walks along the top, doing a full perimeter check.
"Neurotoxin," Zelena says surely. "I can't feel my legs at all. Must not have worked on you or you took a low enough dose. If the food is poisoned, then the rest of the people outside are in the same condition as me. You will have to find David to find any anti-toxin if there are any. Close the door when you leave. The protection doesn't come into effect if the door is open."
Cob, when you fly to the rooftops, you start to see something you have missed before. The street surrounding the estate is empty -- too empty. You check the other street behind the houses and see festivities and signs of fighting between some red-cloaked individuals, the people partying, and some gold-armoured individuals. Both the red cloaks, which you assume to be the Scarlet Barony, and the gold armours, which you assume to be the Amber Squad, are fighting amongst the crowd, expertly weaving around objects and people. While the red cloaks are trying to minimize casualties and damage, the gold cloaks seem to want to cause as much chaos as possible. Already, you can see signs of the festivities dimming a little as the people look around in confusion. You surmise that if the Barony fails to stop the Amber Squad there, you will have to defend the estate's perimeter.
A problem arises when you fly back to the wall to report your findings. You notice the two guards on the watch tower missing and find their bodies at the base of the tower unmoving. The party in the manor also seems to have halted. You can see a few people strangely sitting on the floor through the window. They are gesturing wildly at an unseen person and a few of the still-standing people in the manor seem to shimmer a little before their clothes change to incorporate a little bit of orange and gold. One of those still-standing people is Lady Leillana herself. It doesn't take long to notice that you and all the people preparing this event have been duped. You thought that the threat would come only from outside the estate. You didn't take into account that the threat of an inside man is more severe and has more far-reaching consequences.
"Yes, the pins have been given to our staff," David replies. "We have yet to give it to the Lady's own staff," he adds, looking a bit wary at his brother.

Eremoz takes notice at the name Guilleman. “Are you referring to Julian? Or… someone else?”
”I will be roaming the party. Remaining mobile should give troublemakers a second thought.”
"Ah, you've met him, eh?" Daven says with a grimace. "Uncouth fellow, that Julian. His younger brother, Fenton, is a little bit more sensible but still has that arrogance of new money. Drexon also refuses the armband, “No thank you, I am supposed to blend in rather than stand out”.
He holds out his arms and takes a turn showing he doesn’t wear armour or weapons.
"Very well, then," David says with a nod. "It also appears only Mr Eremoz and Mr Ekorin visibly carry their weapon. We can work with that. I will notify the staff that you will be in as a guest and treat you as they would a guest."

"Trouble inside."
Eremoz let’s out a low growl at Cob’s mention of trouble. “We need to find Zelena.”
He ducks back inside the door and tries to remain unseen as he makes his way to check the family area and the garden.
