Ebzer the barbarian stares about himself in wonder and awe. It had been many years since he was in the company of this many others of his own race. And the city! A marvel of iron and stone, lit by the fires of a thousand forges!
He will try to strike up a conversation with the weapon vendor over the relative merits of various axes. If the vendor does not seem affected like some of the others with the strange behavior, Ebzer will say to him in Dwarvish,Friend, I am new in this city, but... are some of your fellow citizens behaving... oddly? Is there some sort of sickness going around?

Katryl History Check to know about Gracklstugh: 9)
Katryl gives Khessa a look as she works to sell her items. She slowly walks up behind her. "Selling my dagger are you?" she says sternly. She holds the face for just a moment before she breaks out into a grin. "I do wonder if perhaps they might have shortswords I could use. Or some well-crafted druegar studded leather?"
She hears the questions Ebzer is posing to the vendor. As he and others are speaking, she takes some time to scan the other drugar in the area, trying to get some idea about their behavior. (Insight: 12)
As you all begin to talk to the merchant, you do notice a few other odd things now and then:
Someone else comes in and talks to his associate who keeps changing the price on some greaves but accuses the customer of asking for a different price every time. The one you are talking to suddenly goes invisible during the conversation, but clearly keeps right on talking to you as if nothing has happened before reappearing a few moments later. Finally, there is a scuffle across the way as another merchant threatens to kill a customer but it looks like he just waves it off as if it is nothing but the way of doing business. Even as outsiders, their behavior does strike you as odd at the very least.
When asked about odd behavior and sickness the merchant grunts and shrugs. "Probably got a dose of the lake I bet," he says with a grim nod. "I wouldn't know fer sure though, keep to myself. Try Ghohlbrorn's Lair, if someone knows somethin' they're probably there."
The smith has no use for the pearls and gems but can point you down the way to a jeweler who will take them. All items (except the mushrooms and the gnoll armor) can be sold for 80% of their usual price. You can get any standard starting equipment for 10% more than listing price. There are currently no magical items available in the marketplace. There is nothing special about the duergar weapons/armor except that they are exceptionally well crafted and likely bear the mark of the clan that made them. (DM note: that will not be relevant to the story)
(Katryl really has no ability, but could someone try to Persuade for a higher payment for selling the gems or lower cost for buying items? Or just that's the best we can do?)
...Katryl gives Khessa a look as she works to sell her items. She slowly walks up behind her. "Selling my dagger are you?" she says sternly. She holds the face for just a moment before she breaks out into a grin. "I do wonder if perhaps they might have shortswords I could use. Or some well-crafted druegar studded leather?"
...
Khessa puts her hands on Katryl's shoulders, looking at her softly with her blue eyes, trying to help her remember: "But... dear... I gave your dagger back long ago... After we met Mr Big Ball, remember? I took a dagger from the poor halfling's corpse and gave you yours ba-" then he notices the genasi's grin and bursts out laughing too "Good, you're letting your sense of Humor, huh? Great! Better to face problems smiling than despairing. And by the way... I don't have a shortsword, but if our blacksmith friend here finds me a greatsword, I won't need the scimitar I am been forced to use until now anymore; if you want it, I'll gladly give it to you! It's not too different from a shortsword... it's a slashing weapon rather than a piercing one, but it's still one of those light weapons that those quick and agile enough" she nudges her "can creep into unprotected areas of armors... What do you say? Do you like it? Or would you still prefer a shortsword?"
...The smith has no use for the pearls and gems but can point you down the way to a jeweler who will take them. So... 1200 jewelry/gems * 80% = 960
960 / 4 = 240gp for each one of us
Khessa also sells
spear 1gp * 80% = 8 sp
dagger 2gp * 80% = 1gp 6sp
scimitar (unless useful to Katryl - if Katryl likes it Khessa gives it to her - for free of course) 25gp * 80% = 20gp
And buys only (given the higher prices)
a splint armor 200gp + 10% = 220 gp
a maul 10gp + 10% = 11 gp
material components for Find Familiar spell (investment for the future - she is trying to learn this spell - and someday she will): 10 gp worth of charcoal, incense, and herbs+ brass brazier
I was mistaken, Khessa can still also buy the greatsword (50gp + 10% = 55gp) and a proper spellbook (she can find it somewher, right? it must not be such a rare thing... It is needed by every wizard... 50gp + 10% = 55gp) - she does.
(Katryl really has no ability, but could someone try to Persuade for a higher payment for selling the gems or lower cost for buying items? Or just that's the best we can do?)
I think Traydark is the most charismatic among us... If he wants to try to haggle and prices change, I can recalculate our revenues, no problem. At the moment, I applied what the DM declared.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The noble drow would do what he can to make the sell at the jeweler as profitable as possible. Persuasion to haggle: 19 Another roll if help action is given: 20
(Katryl can't really use a scimitar - no proficiency in martial weapons except rapier, longsword, and shortsword.)
"Afraid I've really no skill in handling that thing," Katryl says about the scimitar. "But I would not mind a pair of shortswords. And studded leather armor if someone has that."
(OOC - Assuming they're available: Studded Leather (45 gp), 2 Shortswords (2x10 gpm). Total 65 gp +10% = 71 gp, 5 sp. I guess she'd sell the leather armor for the 8 gp. With 240 gp from the gems it's a net of 176 gp, 5 sp, plus the items.)
Assuming Gholbrorn's lair is an inn or a tavern, Traydark would ask for diections there now that they have lost their guide to the picturesque city of Gracklstugh.
And the fungi? Ok, the smith is not interested, but in the market can we find someone that could buy them? (Asking now, because my feminine instinct tells me we'll be in trouble in no time, so better do all financtial transactions now, while we have the chance...)
Oh, and just one last thing: is Khessa able to find boots like these?
and how much would they cost?!
(Yeah, I know Traydark, I should keep a low profile... but if you seriously think about it: unless you permanently cast Invisibility on me, I'm not going unnoticed, no matter what... so, if I'm going to be noticed anyway, might as well get noticed with nice boots on, right?!)
(No, mushrooms are worthless here since the farm them regularly themselves. The duergar are practical people, not fashionable. They would not sell boots like that unfortunately.)
Your attempts at haggling with the merchant are met with near open hostility, as if they are insulted that they are not giving you their best price. After the exchange you notice that the other duergar are staring at you, hands on their sides as if ready to draw weapons, and there is a slight sound of footsteps nearby but you don't see anyone else. When your business is concluded the merchant gives some vague direction towards Ghohlbrorn's Lair and tells you to shove off, in so many words.
... The duergar are practical people, not fashionable. They would not sell boots like that unfortunately...
(@DM: You are sooooo evil, gnomes! YOU are the DM! YOU could have decided that a duergar more enterprising than the others had gone to fashion school in a more refined place and, returned to Graklstugh, had begun to be a stylist… But no! You stuck to the most mundane scenario! 'The duergar are practical people, not fashionable. They would not sell boots like that' Arrrrgggh! I forgive you just because at least they had weapons and armor worthy of the name...)😉
Khessa is extremely pleased with her new equipment!
The new armor is even better than the one the drow 'retained' - the narrow vertical strips of metal, superbly tempered, offer even more effective protection than the chain mail she used to wear (and which is used on joints anyway). The manufacturer's mark, a sort of stylized black diamond on the left shoulder, gives a touch of rustic elegance to a solid but practical armor, whose weight is optimally distributed on the powerful shoulders of the blonde arcane warrior.
The two-handed weapons that she has finally managed to obtain, the greatsword and the maul, finally give her the right feel. Not that the tall adventuress didn't know how to use spears and scimitars... but the sensation of a two-handed weapon whirling naturally, shifting all the combined weight of body and weapon... that's something she's been missing for some time!
And finally, a real spellbook too, not a flimsy assortment of Tressym papers...which are readily included in the book anyway! But at least now they will be much more protected; the grimoire has almost the appearance of an improper weapon, with its metal binding and the embossed wording on a front plate: 'Knowledge must be forged to last'.
Feeling like a new woman, Khessa only belatedly notices Traydark almost facing lynching for haggling; worried she approaches, but luckily right in that moment everything seems to be resolved without the need to resort to violence. As a precaution, the blonde arcane warrior, even without drawing out the heavy weapons whose grips stick out, however, visible from behind her shoulders, even more imposing than usual in the new armor that shines with the glow of the surrounding fires, keeps close to the noble drow. She speaks to him, commenting in a low voice: "Good craftsmen... too bad they are also a little too crazy" (she refers to the bizarre episodes she has witnessed, with the others, recently) "and a little too unfriendly. Better not to separate".
However, the tall adventuress is ready to head towards Ghohlbrorn's Lair.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Realizing just how inflexible, stubborn and deaf to reason the duergar really are, Traydark quickly ceases his attempts to negotiate for a more reasonable price for what they are about to purchase. As he is still a fugitive from his breathren, the noble drow also accepts that he might need the protection that duergar made armor can offer and buys a set of black studded leather, not nearly as elaborately designed as drow armor but nevertheless efficient. "Thank you for your concern human but I can take care of myself. You look like a true warrior now although those weapons, aren't they a but crude and brutish even for you?" The noble drow says, frowning at the clumsy weapons of the arcane warrior. "I'm looking forward to see you wield them in battle though."He says with a nod, starting to make his way towards Ghohlbrorn's Lair.
"Well, there are circumstances where size matters, Traydark; live with it. Anyway, if 'brutish' is the word drow use at the sight of weapons they would struggle to lift trying two at a time and capable of breaking their brittle bones with a single strike..." Khessa winks "then yes, Traydark, I'd say these weapons are truly exquisitely 'brutish'. And a chance to see them in action, I suspect you'll get too soon," she sighs "given the drow who hunt us, the demons on the loose, and these oh-so-nice citizens".
The noble drow chuckles and nods appreciatively at the blonde human's quick retort. The others would likely try to find their way to the surface now. He wondered if he would miss them. He shook his head and resumed his planning for his elaborate vengeance. The demons lords were a minor problem compared to the fates he he had thought out for his traitorous siblings.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Katryl makes sure her new armor fits well, then sets the scabbards of her new shortswords to hang from her belt. She sets off to follow the others, staying quiet and observing the city as the two talk.
(I don't deserve this abuse. I am trying to have a dark story worthy of bard's tales later and instead I'm being assaulted for the dwarf's fashion choice. *sobs* I will be in my trailer.)
