Esvaris just barely misses the catch and fumbles the quarterstaff for a moment, but the dwarf girl only gets one quick hit in before he recovers and is ready to make his next move.
“Why yes, of course Miss.... um. Well seems I never got your name. I belive that is the chore Dawnlord Menges tasked me with.” I sit down at the bar at this point. “You say Dawnlord Menges moved into the High Lord’s office? Where possibly could Dawnlord Menges found room for all of of the High Lord’s possessions? From my understanding, the High Lord was a collector of many wonderous items.”
I pick up the quarterstaff and wield it with both hands. I make one attack with the quarterstaff, then make an unarmed strike with my foot as a bonus action.
Attack (quarterstaff): 20 Damage: 7
Attack (unarmed strike): 20 Damage: 5
(The damage on that second attack should actually be 4, I typed 1d4+4 instead of 1d4+3, sorry)

I place my hand on my shortsword, silently implying I will meet steel with steel if he chooses to proceed. "Neither of us wants to spill blood today, right? Take your foolish sidekick elsewhere so all of us can move on with this fine day."
Initiative roll (if needed): 6
If he opts for combat, I use my action to dodge. Despite my words and hand on shortsword, I have no intention of drawing a weapon. Yet.

Simeon: Make an intimidation check. As you are warning the two ruffians, you feel a slight tug from behind. A small green skinned boy, his lower jaw protruding slightly with two tusks poking out from his lip, no more than eight years old at most, is attempting to steal your purse.
Korlan: "Oh, forgive my manners!" She laughs. "I'm Sister Naphtali. I'm in charge of the rectory." Gesturing over her shoulder and slightly to her right, with an irritated look, "His lordship had them put most of High Lord Emeritus' personal belongings into the private meeting room next to the pantry room. You see a door to the left of the open door behind her. "It's a right mess in there." She gets a speculative look in her eye and then a sort of sweet pleading look, "If you'd be willing to clean it all up and make the room useable again, I'd see my way clear to giving you and your friends free drinks at tonight's evening meal." By her expression you can see that it would be a huge burden off her shoulders.
Esvaris: You manage to strike her twice in quick succession, landing solid blows. Grunting with the impact, she grins fiercely, clearly pleased with you. Then she makes a low strike at your knee. (Attack: 11, damage if any 1 half if successful)
“Well of course. I’m sure my friends would enjoy the drinks. It was such a long journey to get here. I’m sure we are all sore.” I hop off the stool back down to the ground. “Would be best if I got started right away. I’m sure you wouldn’t disagree Sister Naphtali.”
I peer into the open door. “That is quite a mess. For your sake, I think closing the door behind me while I worked would be best. I wouldn’t want to burden you with the noise.”

"This place is really growing on me." I turn around, make an attempt to grapple the lad, and then continue to turn, hopefully making a full circle with my movement. If this plays out as I hope, I will be holding the child and facing the maul-carrying scoundrel (who is likely in cahoots with the child).

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Simeon: Spinning around to catch the boy, not quite as smoothly as you would have liked, you manage to snag his wrist as he attempts to dart away. The large greenish fellow behind you, not at all impressed with your posturing, uses this opportunity to attempt to club you over the head with his maul. (attack: 9 possible damage: 5) The thin man, with a hiss of fury attempts to slam into the back of your knees. (make a strength or dex check against his: 11)
EDIT after roll: (if you fail the save against the thin man) The maul flashes past you, missing, as you continue to spin round, dragging the boy with you, but before you can complete your manuever, the second man knocks you forward onto your knees. The boy scrambles up and attempts to get away (10)
Esvaris: Your quarterstaff blurs in your hand, connecting with a satisfying "thwack!" as you strike her shoulder. Your confidence soaring at this third good attack, you make a bold spin kick which she deflects neatly, slamming the end of her staff down hard into the instep of your other foot. The pain causes you to stumble awkwardly (make a dex check to see if you remain on your feet. Success if 12 or higher)
The large goliath, Friar Bernard, calls out, "Enough. Well done, novice." A small smile touches his lips and you can see that he is pleased with you. "Three days. That is all I think you will need to become proficient with the staff, with your already considerable skill." With that he bows slightly, turns and leaves through the door behind him, ducking his head as he enters.
Safara puts her quarterstaff back on the rack. "Good." she nods at you. "Apprentice now," she says in her gruff way.
Korlan: Thanking you and waving you over to the room, Sister Naphtali turns back to her inventory list.
Inside the 40ft x 30ft windowless room is a large round wooden table with several ladder-backed wooden chairs around it. Covering every surface you see piles of papers, robes, personal items, inks, books and even the rugs, curtains and a tapestry from the walls. As if Dawnlord Menges wanted to remove every last vestige of the High Lord's belongings from his rooms, you even see a fireplace poker, and an iron box with used coals in it. Everything is haphazardly placed around the room. Clearly the High Lord's chambers were emptied in a hurry.
Esvaris: The dwarven woman, hearing your words, tells you that you can keep the staff you used. You earned it. She is obviously very impressed by you and you seem to have made a new friend.
Does she seem like we will keep training? If not, I will try to go to Friar Barnard's other class. I was quite impressed with his quarterstaff work, and I think I've found a new hero.

Feeling more than bewildered by being the center of so much hostile attention, I'm unclear on whose combat turn it is. If the turn is mine, then...
Warhammer (wielded two-handed) attack versus large greenish fellow: 22 (If successful, he takes 4 damage). I then use action surge to make a second melee attack on the large greenish fellow: 9 (If successful, he takes 5 damage).
Esvaris: Speaking to her for a moment, you learn that her name is Safara Brokenaxe. She is the friar's apprentice, and now apparently, so are you. You walked in at the end of her intense fight against the goliath, which took every ounce of strength and speed that she could muster. Sparring with you was more like a 'cool down' after exercise for her.
As you pass through the door into Friar Bernard's other class, he pauses, closed book in hand, to look at you. His eyes seem to assess you for a moment and then he nods to a seat at the back. The small room contains three rows of long desks, each with three chairs behind it, and all facing towards the end of the room you just entered through. There are only five students watching the lesson; another dwarf, three middle aged humans, and a gnomish girl whose legs dangle from her seat, not quite touching the floor.
"A locked book shares no knowledge," the large man with unexpectedly elegant hands continues speaking. After listening for a few minutes, you realize that he is teaching a class on how to pick locks in order to access ancient books which no longer have a key. He eventually distributes locked books and thieve's tools to the class, allowing you all to practice this new skill.
