This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?

Ilifir lashes the logs together and the crude raft is complete. It's a bit unsteady as the party climbs aboard. A long wooden pole is not hard to fashion, and the party is ready to depart. The river flows to the west. 3 hours later you are tie off the raft near where you think the Wayward Pool is located. As you traverse the forest you keep on just finding yourself back at the raft. It seems you have gone in circles for the past hour. Which is strange as you have been trying to go more or less straight.

(OOC: That all happened after the long rest, starting in the morning? I've lost track of the SR & LR we've had since we left Nib's cave. Have the party members been able to spend enough time studying the items Nib made for them to determine what they do and to attune to them, if needed?)

Valrieth says, "I don't think that we're that lost. There must be some enchantment here that keeps directing us back to the river. Do you think that it's the hag's doing? Is she trying to hide the pool for some reason? Or maybe the Wayward Pool is like a spot that Finley and I visited back in Hither: Telemy Hill. That is, a place that the hag has not yet corrupted and where some other fey magic still holds sway." Having found themselves back at the raft again, Val sits down in the grass, takes out her notebook, and flips through the pages. "I don't think that we've heard anything about this kind of magic or how to get through it." She looks with concern at Finley and says, "I'd vote for moving on toward Loomlurch and maybe trying to come back here after we return the painting to Bad B. Maybe it's only possible to get to the Wayward Pool under certain conditions. Like -- I don't know -- only during a full moon or only when accompanied by the right fey. Or maybe we need a password or some sort of key or portal. We just don't have much time to spend trying to figure it out right now."
"Aye, ah'd like ta not get continuously lost in this place." Finley fidgets nervously. "What if one of us were ta walk backwards? Ah'm sure there's ah way ta move forward while we're 'ere, although ah dunnae know too much about magic in general, there's always ah way around it, aye?"

During the last evening, Lerak would have try to attune or at least to understand the magic of his new golden cloak. Coming back to the raft, running in circle is testing Lerak patience. He is not the patient rabbit type. "If the forest does not want us to continue then we should push forward as Val said. Loomlurch should not be too far I hope and maybe we'll get more answers over there."
Lerak is not much a planner but rushing toward the home of a hag is not very comforting. "if we need to fight, do you think we stand a chance against a hag ? I mean we are five now and all of us seems skilled..." he asks
During the last evening, Lerak would have try to attune or at least to understand the magic of his new golden cloak.
Oh, yes! Valrieth would have been studying her new cloak during the previous day's long rest. In her case, the resulting cloak is a dull greenish-brown and trimmed with golden thread, including little embroidered start and moon shapes. If Val couldn't attune to it during the ride on the raft, she'll do so at the next short rest.

Valrieth says, "Oh! That's a good idea. We could try it, but just let us know when you want to give up and move on to Loomlurch. I leave that decision up to you: we have no deadline other than your heart!"
Val thinks that they could send a subset of the party to try it, but if they're all going to march into the woods again, Val suspects that they'd all need to be walking backwards. She starts practicing walking / hopping backwards so that she can do it comfortably without stepping on her cloak!
Lerak is not much a planner but rushing toward the home of a hag is not very comforting. "if we need to fight, do you think we stand a chance against a hag ? I mean we are five now and all of us seems skilled..." he asks
Valrieth answers honestly, "I'm not sure, but I think that we'd want to learn much more about Granny Nightshade before we should try it! Like I said, we know quite a lot about Bad B in Hither, and I'm still worried about whether we could survive a fight with her. From what little I remember, hags look like old crones, but the old stories always talk about them as being physically powerful with claws like steel either from some giant's blood or just from their fey ancestry. They also have magical powers, and here in Prismeer, we don't know for sure exactly what kind of magic they can do. We learned Big B's weakness, which I already explained. I'm just hoping that we'll find out that there's some trick to defeating the hag who rules Thither, too. Something that she's vulnerable too, or something that makes it harder for us to harm us."
While they're deciding whether to try walking backwards toward the pool, Val explains the basic battle plan she and Finley had discussed for fighting Big B, and she imagines that they'd try something similar with Granny Nightshade:
Just before they start the fight
(For only one of the hags) Finley would drink his potion of fire breath
Finley would try to cast Faerie Fire on the hag. If they can get this spell to stick, it will be a big boost for the party since most of the ways that they have to deal damage rely on attacks.
Lerak could attack the hag (raging)
The rest of the party could start their attacks.
Val (and Ilifir) would try to find cover and fight at range with spells and cantrips.
Finley (and Lerak) would try to keep the hag tied up in melee.
Val's spell would make it harder for the hag to hit Finley.
If Finley hits the hag with his Thunder Gauntlets, their magic makes it harder for the hag to hit anyone other than Finley.
For the first 3 rounds
Val can attack with both a spell and her Archer Starry Form's radiant attack.
Finley can attack with both his Thunder Gauntlets and the fiery dragon's breath
If they all survive for 3 rounds, they'd have to see how things look and then improvise.
After the first few rounds, Finley's fiery breath would run out, and Val will be running low on spell slots. There will be a big drop in how much damage they can do each round at that point, but they'd have to see how the hag is looking at that point.
Val's biggest concern is the hags' magic. With Bavlorna's weakness, they have a way to prevent her from casting spells, but Val doesn't believe that all three sisters have that same allergy to seeing someone running widdershins around them. If the hag has a way to disable or restrain or poison one or more of the party members (e.g., hold person, web, ray of sickness) or to summon a bunch of minions to join in a fight, the odds would turn against the party very quickly.
Val says that when she and Finley discussed it before, they felt that they had a good plan, but more than their previous fights, Val thought that the outcome would depend on the Fates (i.e., dice rolls 😉). If they have fortune's favor, they would probably succeed, but if not, the hag would probably kill them all. Val doesn't see much chance for a "middle ground" when fighting a hag. Just a few missed attacks in a row or a couple of successful spells from the hag could mean disaster.
(OOC: depending on the hag's saving throws and AC and whether we have Otto, we should be averaging something like 40 - 75 HP damage / round for the first few rounds. If the hag survives 3 rounds and ~150 HP of damage, I hope that she would already by using her magic to escape instead of trying to harm the party more!)
If Lerak is trying it, Valrieth will go with him, also walking backwards. She prefers to keep the whole party together if Finley and Ilifir are also willing to go backwards.
ilifir stops dead when walking backwards is suggested, then breaks into laughter, but is happy enough to go along with it
he discusses valrieth's plans, stating that he has a spell similar to the ones she is worried about, but its unreliable, and that most of his spells are designed for martial targets, and as such wont do well, however he is quite effective with his cantrips. other than adding this information and continued grumbling about how its suicide he thinks the plan is quite good

"Should we continue our journey then ? I don't think we should lose more time here...how long it's been six hours ?". Lerak has no sense of the time that has passed, one day he will buy a watch but that was not the concern of today.
On the raft he will chat with Val about his plan "A good one, but in my experience he never goes according to plan...so I stopped making some. It's actually more relaxing ! ". He gives a good tap on Val 's back and adds "but I will try my best to follow your instructions, you seem better than me to organise stuff. Just points me towards the hag"
other than adding this information and continued grumbling about how its suicide he thinks the plan is quite good
Valrieth is less prickly about his grumbling this time. She just says that she doesn't necessarily want to start a fight with the hags, but it's hard for them to get through Prismeer without dealing with them. "And when you're dealing with someone as wicked and unreliable as a hag," she says, "it's best to have a fall-back plan in case things go badly."

(OOC: I think that there's still time to travel more by river toward Loomlurch today.)
Val looks at Lerak with a mixture of admiration and horror. Imagine just going through life with no plan! His confidence reminds her of their former companion, Gan-Re. Maybe it's just a common trait for big, strong fighters! As she watches the trees along the banks flow past them, she ponders what it must feel like to go through the world like that. Being such a little harengon in the big towns and cities of Faerun, Val was always anxious, feeling that something bad could happen at any moment. And sometimes it did! Maybe that's why she likes to think ahead and make careful plans?
Of course, she has learned much and found her own strength since arriving in Prismeer. She casts produce flame and holds the flame in her hands for a few minutes, watching its light reflect off the surface of the river.
“Damn ah really thought that woulda worked.” Finley scratches his head. “Could it be an illusion o’ some kind tha’ we could bypass? Most o’ mah knowledge on th’ magic variety deals with forging armor. Not whatever is going on ‘ere. Or do all o’ ye wannae just head more down th’ river?”

"It was a very clever idea, Finley!" Valrieth says encouragingly. Unfortunately, she is also out of ideas: "I don't know any divination spells powerful enough to figure out this kind of fey magic, and I'm not even strong enough yet to break an existing spell. Unless Ilifir has heard of this kind of enchantment before and how to get past it, I think that we'll just have to move on. Maybe we'll learn more about how to get to the Wayward Pool when we investigate Loomlurch. As far as we know, we don't need to go to the pool before we try to take the painting back to Bad B." Val is very focused on getting that done first. Once they complete Finley's bargain with Bavlorna, they could try to come back to Thither and see whether they could get to the lake.
The question now is whether to go straight to Loomlurch. Val is feeling the time pressure of Finley's bargain, but she's not sure that she likes the idea of arriving at the hag's home after dark. They could try to head toward Little Oak first, where Nib said that there were often children playing. It might be safer to spend the night there. Even nasty children should pose less danger than a hag and her minions, right?
ilifir looks surprised when val turns to him for insight, but waves it off "places like this? im familiar, ive seen them, avoided them, lived in one even. but trying to guess the key is beyond me, and would take time we dont have. lets move on, head straight to loomlurch, if not rest and meet her by morn"
