Hey again, I played in your previous attempt to run this one. It's unfortunate it came to a sudden stop, so I would like to try again. The two might be similar characters, but not the same.
Growing up in Ilizmagorti isn't simple, and unfortunately, it's an easy place to dump all sorts of poor souls. Along with many others, Ya'elvi grew up learning the best way to avoid people. At the end of the day, every person was to themselves, and the best way to survive was to stay as far as one could get from others. Rooftops were Ya'elvi's favourite, away from the common drunkard's reach.
Her best friends were the few animals around that managed to survive long enough in the city. Earning their trust was often hard, but was well worth it. They'd never betray you, never try to use you. For a few scraps of leftover food, they'd keep you company and help forget the things you had to do to earn said food.
But animals die eventually, while Humans live on. Even worse, as someone of Fey origin, she'd outlive them all eventually. The animals were, despite her deep connection to them, no reason to stay in Ilizmagorti. Sneaking on a ship was dangerous. On the wrong ship, if you're found, it can even be fatal. But Ya'elvi was patient. Earning and slowly saving money by whatever questionable means that aren't too dangerous, she eventually managed to secure a spot on a boat that left that accursed place, the destination didn't even matter. Anywhere would be better, and there, she could begin a new life. Even if it takes time, she will live long enough anyway, so long as she stays safe.
Think I have the character sheet link updated please let me know if it works. The current sheet is a level 2 character to show potential multi-class, if needed to be changed back to level one please let me know.. I am brand new to play-by-post, so please be patient and any pointers will be helpful. I will go do my own reading but hearing from those who have played is always more helpful for me.
Also, I can't seem to figure out how to post photos so any help there would be great too.
Also, has anyone considered starting a campaign to all join and have easier access to character sheets?
Quick question, I haven’t used the forum before but would like to. I want to copy over my paper character sheet (start from lvl 1) of a character I made that would be perfect for this campaign due to him being a pirate as part of his background already. I was curious though, if I wanted to stick with him being a Drow ranger/horizon walker, would you need me to purchase the sub race/class/feats and spells in order to play it and submit an actual character sheet here built with the builder tool on the site or am I able to write it in on here without purchasing, to apply?
Excellent questions Nycrol, let me take them one at a time...
For the lore...What I can tell you is that the Pirates of the Shackles are free spirits living off of the spoils of the sea. They predate on ships that fly any flag, but most of those spoils happen to be trading and navy ships of the Cheliaxian Empire...a near-by world power whose state, and only sanctioned, religion is the worship of Asmodeus, the First God-Fiend, Ruler of Hell, and Prince of all Devils. (Extremely Lawful, Extremely Evil). Because of this most life long pirates and privateers are on the chaotic side of the alignment chart, ranging anywhere up and down the good-evil scale.
This is an excerpt of the PF player's guide that normally you would read through when creating your character. Everything else in the players guide is PF specific mechanics, so it would be of less import. I will be trying to wrestle those mechanics into something that resembles 5e. Still, if you would like to read through the player's guide, Paizo does provide that for free...you can find it here.
The shipping lanes of Golarion’s seas and oceans are filled with fat merchant vessels laden with trade goods both mundane and exotic, as well as the pirates and freebooters who prey on them. Under the banner of their Hurricane King, these buccaneers sally forth from that archipelago of lawless pirate ports and anchorages known as the Shackles, plundering the shipping of countless countries and trade consortiums, then vanishing back into the maze of islands and reefs they call home. The nations of the Inner Sea would like nothing more than to end the pirate menace once and for all, but the eternal hurricane known as the Eye of Abendego has thus far shielded the Free Captains of the Shackles from the threat of retaliation.
In the Skull & Shackles Adventure Path, the PCs take on the role of pirates, but they must make a name for themselves in piracy, plunder, and disrepute to truly become infamous Free Captains of the Shackles. The most important thing to keep in mind when creating your character is that piracy plays a significant role in this Adventure Path—your character should want to become a pirate, or at least not be opposed to the idea. This guide offers some tips about the types of characters that will be best suited for adventuring in the Shackles, as well as campaign traits to flesh out those characters’ backgrounds. Finally, it provides rules for ship-to-ship combat (including sample ships) that will play a major role in the Skull & Shackles Adventure Path as the PCs captain their own ship in search of plunder and infamy!
That also answers the question about the pirate king...the Free Captains of the Shackles recognize the leadership of the Hurricane King, but he isn't really so much a ruler or leader of a unified group as he is the Captain of all Captains. Some ships may hold more loyalty to him than others...some may see him mostly as a figurehead, although they likely would say that to his face.
I'm afraid I can't answer too many questions regarding the what the initial state of the chosen squad will be just yet. But I will say that the initial onramp to the adventure has some railroad tracks built into it...that's why it is important that you make a character that wants to be at sea. Suffice it to say for the first bit of the adventure path until you have the means and desire to change it player agency is a bit on the low side. It does open up though through the first portion of the AP (from levels 1 - 5 ish) That is probably as spoiler as I want to get for now.
Normally I am fine with flavoring visuals or even mechanics of casting however you choose...however I will say that there comes a point in the second half of the adventure path (I think around like level 13 or so) when actual firearms do start showing up. They are a very VERY new technology. So, if you want to be a warlock that has some kind of ethereal or eldritch pistol appear in your had as you use eldritch blast and then puff away again I am okay with that...but it will be quite apparent to anyone watching that it is magic and not an actual firearm. Just a heads up.

Artimas - I am a free to play player myself, so I would never ask anyone else to buy something, being the cheapskate that I am.
I do need to see a character sheet to be able to make a selection though.
If you would like, you can post a link to a digital character sheet from some other resource that is free...an google docs link would be fine, or I have used Myth-Weavers in the past. Especially back when I played pathfinder pbp on the Paizo boards, because they did not have a built in character sheet app.
If you are selected then you can create a character sheet and I will help you with any of the subrace/class/feat/ and spell options that you do not own. I have become a pretty deft hand at using the homebrew options here on the site...so I can make just about anything work. In fact, I imagine I likely have most of what you need already built. Can't share it to the wide community because of DnDB's rules on copyrights, but if we are in a campaign together than you can use it.

That would be a good idea, but unfortunately DnD B already thought of that and locked it down to prevent everyone from being in one large "campaign" to share books. Any one campaign can only have 12 players in it. Our current roster at last count is already at 23.

I will officially be closing recruiting tomorrow night at around this time. I hope to have selections of party members done by EOD Friday or sometime Saturday.

Brief Background: A drow who once lived in the Underdark but found his attachment to the coast, sea and adventure, far more appealing and so he became a renegade to his natural people and set out in hope of glory, wealth, and exploration. Az’el is also an avid collector of artifacts and trinkets. Once apart of a crew of notorious pirates who sailed up and down the sword coast, until their ship was destroyed by a Kraken. Az’el managed to escape with his life but his captain and crew did not. He now finds himself in search of a crew and a new ship, so he wanders port peril in search of such, ready to set sail once more.
Ability Scores: Standard Array
(I have a paper copy of this characters build sheet but he is currently higher level than 1 so I remade him, some things are a little different on the character builder but ultimately worked out.)
Ah! A fellow cheapskate! Over 3 years on this site and they've yet to pry a single dime from my iron grip. Anyways, down to business...
Name: Balasar Mystan Race: Bronze Dragonborn Class: Fighter (gonna go Battle Master) Background: Touched by the Sea
Backstory:
Born to comfortable parents in a comfortable inland town, Balasar found no comfort in his situation. He had draconic instincts that none other in his family seemed to. His fascination with the art and movement of warfare, his opposition of tyranny in all of its forms, his difficult-to-satisfy (some might say greedy) nature, but most of all, his yearning for the sea- all were traits that his favorite stories from the local bard consistently attributed to bronze dragons. But the only part of the coast he ever saw was a beautiful tapestry in the window of a nearby store, which he would stare at for hours on end.
Once he came of age, the owner of the store, with whom Balasar was good friends with, saw how the painting had not sold in many years, and decided to gift it to Balasar. Taking it as a sign that he was to stay and wait for destiny no longer, Balasar set out at once towards the waters and the beaches for which he so dearly yearned. Keeping up with his studies of warfare, testing his strength at every available chance, and consistently praying at his prized tapestry to Bahamut (or whatever equivalent) for guidance, Balasar ensured that by the time he reached the destination of his pilgrimage, he would be ready. Whether he is truly ready or not has yet to be decided.
Notes: I'm using the PHB dragonborn for now, but I'd prefer the Fizban's version. I'd be happy to recreate it myself in the homebrewer, but I figured it could save some time if I waited to see if you've already made it. I also don't really have the background on the sheet since I can't add homebrew to my collection, but it'll be easy enough to pop it into the character creator if I get in.
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

A PM has been sent to the 6 crew members that were selected for this voyage. I would love to pick more...and I considered for half a second running two campaigns concurrently. But overcommitting myself is what caused failures in the past...so I need to stick to what I have planned.
If anyone wants to pick up another 6 applicants and run a second game along side mine I would be happy to share the materials with you and be a sounding board if you have any questions. Out of 26 excellent applications I am sad I am only able to pick 6.
PbPs of course are plagued with dropouts...I may very well PM some of you in the coming weeks or months if our crew experiences loss to see if you would still be interested in joining. If you think you might be, maybe save a copy of your character sheet as a PDF before you delete it to make room for your next character (if you are a cheapskate like me and only have room for 6 active character slots).
Best of luck in all your future sailings.
