“Virro!”, Corlith snaps as he sees Virro examining the fingers of Abby and Fendrick. “Leave them be”.
”Fendrick, there is no need for the watch. We are here on behalf of the Flaming Fists”, he repeats, showing his badge.
”Now, you have known the family a long time, right? We know there is discord between the brothers. An antipathy that has led to assassination attempts. We also know that the family consorts with devils and cults. So, if there are any dangers lurking ahead as we move through the house, you should tell us now, or we have to assume you are accomplices to the crimes of the family”, he says matter of factly.
Abby and Fendrick are very creeped out by Virro's behavior and as they snatch their hands back, Fendrick gets a bit of his backbone back and says, "And who might you all be? Don't introductions go both ways?" He rolls his eyes, "Flaming Fists don't mean much here mister. Maybe in the Lower City, but not in the Upper City and definitely not in this manor."
He looks at Corlith a bit more seriously, "Assassination attempts? Is that was this was for Amrik? An assassination by this third party? Devils and cults. I say, I do not know what you are talking about. The misses is part of the highest echelon of Baldur's Gate, why would she consort with such? Crimes of the family. Hmph." And he crosses his arms and does not say any more.
As Reed opens the door and Wil follows him into the kitchen, pleasant aromas hit their senses immediately as the cook is obviously busy making something. Pots, pans, and cooking utensils dangle above the three wooden preparation tables in the middle of the room, and shelves are lined with bowls, platters, herbs, spices, and dried goods. A man at the center table looks up upon Wil and Reed entering and a scowl crosses his face. "What is the meaning of this? I don't care who you are, I don't like anyone in the kitchen while I am working! Scram." And he goes back to kneading the dough in front of him.
A winged cat slowly prowls towards them, nose in the air and stops a ways a way from them and sits on their haunches, watching them warily.
Reed's stomach grumbles at the smell of all the food. But at the sight of the winged cat he ignores the cook, leaving Wil to deal with that. He smiles at the cat. This was much better than a rat.
"Hi cat," Reed says. "What's your name?"
He holds out his hand to let the creature sniff him if it chooses.
Corlith frowns at Fendrick as he crosses his arms in a huff.
"I think we have heard about enough from you, you obviously have no idea what goes on under this roof. Not surprising that the family would keep it from you, it isn't your fault", he says dismissively to Fendrick.
"Perhaps this cellar would be a good place to keep the staff safe whilst we perform our search", he suggests to his companions, seeing that Wilfred and Reed have moved on.
Wilfred smiles at the cook then starts to move further into the kitchen. "Oh sorry, don't mind us. We are investigating a matter to do with Amrik and the other Vanthumpur's. We just need to ask a few questions. You can keep doing what you are doing, it shouldn't take long. You are Blar Heartsong, correct? I hear you are a good chef, is that true?" As he is talking, he is moving slowly behind where Blar is working. "Now, I have a really important question for you."
Wilfred steps real close, leans over, and whispers into his ear. "What do you know about what happened at the Cliffvine Vineyard?"
The cat slowly walks up to Reed, sniffs his hand. Not smelling anything good, he turns his nose up, turns around and walks away from him. As it turns, you can see it has a bobtail and numerous battle scars.
"Yes, I'm Blar, what's that got to do with anything?" He freezes after Wilfred whispers in his ear. The next second he attempts to jab Wil in the ribs with his elbow to get away, but Wilfred tries to grapple him instead. Blar just twists himself enough to avoid that, but as he runs away, Wil clobbers him on the head with the butt of his glaive and he goes down like a sack of potatoes.
After seeing that the servants Abby and Fendrick aren't going to be too much hassle for the remaining party members, Archie wanders on over the the smaller door in the south west of the room, she tries the handle and finds it unlocked. Peering her head in she takes in the room that she finds and enters.
Reed gets the point from the winged-cat and looks in the pots for something that looks like cat friendly food.
"How about this?" he asks the cat, holding out whatever he found food-wise.
He then watches Wilfred clobber the chef.
"You know him?" Reed asks Wilfred.
While Wilfred deals with his old friend, Reed opens the other three doors that lead out of the kitchen and takes a look inside - starting with the one to the south, then the one on the southern part of the east wall, then finally the one on the northern part of the east wall.
Wilfred sighs. "Why did he have to run. I have questions for him." In response to Reed. "Did I know him? Not yet, but I was planning on knowing him a bit better. How long do you think it would take for him to wake up?" Wilfred will reach into his bag and get some rope. He starts to hogtie the unconscious Blar. "Anything good over there, Reed? Don't suppose there's a pantry or somewhere we can put him?"
Entering the southern west door off of the gallery, Archie finds herself in a room with a high-backed chair facing a pair of padded couches and a coffee table. Thin drapes cover the windows to diffuse the natural light; the walls are lined with framed paintings and a tapestry is hanging on the north wall.
Reed gives the cat some food, and immediately the feline turns back to him and gingerly snatches it from his hand. As the halfling starts checking rooms, the winged cat follows him.
Opening the southern most door, Reed sees what could only be the servants quarters. Four single beds and a dining table with some drawers located under their beds. Another door located on the west wall leads out of the room.
The south door on the east wall shows him a small room that is obviously the pantry. Food and drink are stuffed full on the shelves in this musty room.
The last door on the east wall opens to a room that contains a large barrel and a brick-walls staircase leading down.
"Hey, how about that?" Reed says to Wilfred. "Just the pantry you were looking for."
Reed pockets a few winged-cat friendly treats from the pantry and kitchen and offers out the occasional one as he moves around.
"And that must be down to the cellar," Reed says.
Then he pauses, looking at the air.
"Because cellars are downstairs," Reed says to the air. "Yes, I understand ships don't have cellars."
Reed then sticks his head into the main hall where the others are.
"We found the cellar," Reed says then adds. "And Wilfred is making a new friend. And we have a pantry we can lock up his new friend and these two inside."
He gestures at the two servants they found in the main hall when he says the last part.
Archie strolls in back from the seating room, which now let's light into the gallery, "hey I found some odd demonic tapestry in there, like flaming angels falling from the heavens into a firey pit. The embroidery work on the fire aunt too bad to be honest... Anyway I'm gonna go look in the other rooms before we alert whoever is upstairs, OH! Also there's some family portraits in there, some old guys too, actually three old guys, could be the dead three before they died or something, or was one a woman? I can't remember, anyway there's no traps or anything."
With that said Archie wanders in over to the southern east door and gives that a try.
"You heard him, into the pantry", Corlith instructs Fendrick and Abby. "Do not fear, no harm will come to you as long as you are not implicated in the law and morality breaking activities of the Vanthampur family".
With that he directs them to move in the direction Reed and Wilfred went.
When Archie comes out and mentions the demonic tapestry, he raises an eyebrow at Fendrick, but says nothing further.
"No no no no no" Abby whimpers, "Why would you stuff us in the pantry? Flaming Fists? I thought you were here to uphold the law, not kidnap us!" she starts quivering with fright at the prospect.
Archie heads into the single door on the eastern wall of the gallery, she walks in and notices that this is the foyer, with the main entrance, but before she can notice anything, she hears something called out in a loud but very high voice "ulzrfvyrw!!!"
Archie is stung hard. And as soon as she is, an imp materializes beside her and shakes his little fist at her, repeating, "ulzrfvyrz!" (piercing dam 7, poison dam 5)
Reya comes to attention, "What was that? C'mon, she went through that door!" pointing at the door Archie just disappeared through.
"AGHH WHAT THE SH*T!" Archie calls out rather angrily, before immediately clapping her hands together and shrouding her gauntlets in lightning, she swings out twice attempting to punch the imp.
(14 to hit, 13 thunder damage. 19 to hit, 3 thunder damage)
As both of her punches connect the crackle remains on the imp and buzzes around its head for a moment.
(Until her next turn, if the imp attacks anyone other than Archie, then it does so at disadvantage)
Archie doesn't yell anything this time, her body slumps to the floor as the poison takes effect, the illusion of her fire genasi form flickers out and as she lays there twitching and clanking in her armour, another voice rings out...
Reya's eyes widen, the new voice coming from the other room actually surprising her more than the high pitched voices she couldn't understand. "What? Who was that??" She looks to her new companions to see if they recognize it or not.
Reed looks over at the flying cat when the strange sounds emanate from where Archie apparently went. "Friends of yours?" Reed asks the cat.
He moves quickly towards the entrance to the room Archie went into. His little legs only carry him so far and he doesn't quite make it all the way. As he gets as far as he can though, he pulls his bow out and makes ready to let an arrow fly at any enemy that comes around the corner of the doorway. As he does, he does his best to slip into hiding by the statue near the doorway.
Movement - Full 25' to get through the main hall they entered, around the corner to just by the statue and entry way to the room.
The cat hisses in response to Reed's question, and then follows him out of the kitchen into the next room.
Reed watches the door intently, bow drawn, arrow steady while it waits for its target. Staying hidden, the winged cat suddenly hisses moments before another imp stings Corlith in the neck.
Reed's arrow flies and hits the imp in the back, killing it instantly.
The door between Abby and Fendrick slowly opens on its own. The winged cat hisses again and Roo is stung on his back as another imp appears. Abby screams and Fendrick starts turning white as all this happens around them.
