((I see where I went wrong. What I meant when I said "check-in" was more like "see if anyone else was doing anything of note while Gavin casts Detect Magic and then strips down to swim out under the cloud of flying fish-like creatures to retrieve a magical object at the bottom of the river."))
((Aaaaanyway......))
For Gavin:
The cold water is rather brisk, as you wade out into the river and dive down under the swarming cloud of flying fish creatures to get to the glowing object underneath. The current is a bit strong, flush with mountain run-off and fresh rain, but you manage well enough to get to the treasure you seek. Wrapping your hand around the warm, palm-sized angular object, you go slack, smart enough to try floating down stream just a few feet so that you don't have to both fight the current and emerge under the strange fish creatures at the same time as you float to the surface. As you break the surface of the water, however, your first breath is tinged with the sharp scent of ozone. You realize a little too late that the swarm has followed the object in your hand and you have come out in the thick of them flapping their tiny fins and buzzing about like little icthian hummingbirds around you.
For the party:
You watch as Gavin dives into the water and swims out to the object he detects. However, as his form moves away from the location down stream a bit, the cloud of fish creatures seem to follow. With a mixture of bewilderment, curiosity, and maybe a bit of horror, you see Gavin crest the river's rushing waters right in the middle of the readjusted swarm. As he looks about, a bit perplexed, a small coterie of flying fish swim through the air close enough to touch him, and you can hear the arcing of electrical energy course through the air around him.
((Combat time. These things are going to attack an unarmored Gavin and then we will go to initiative rolls and get combat started. So roll for initiative and then I'll compile a turn order and put up some more information about your fishy foes.))
There are currently two swarms of flying fish monsters. One is currently attacking Gavin who is in the middle of the river. Gavin, you are about ten feet from the bank of the river and can use your move action to get to dry land as if moving through difficult terrain. There's a good 20-30 feet of pebbly beach.
The defenses of the swarms are as follows: AC 13, Saves (Str +1, Dex +3, Con -1, Int -5, Wis -2, Cha - 4)
Happy hunting.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
First thing I want to do is throw this object onto the bank aiming so it’s about 20-30 ft away from my friends. I will then swim fast and hard diagonally with the current to the bank so I am 20-30 ft on the other side of the object, (it being between the party and me), hoping the fish follow it and not me.
Gavin gives the object the best toss he can muster, but between the swarm around him and the rushing waters, he slips and doesn't quite get the distance he was hoping for. The rock-like object splashes into the water a foot or so from the shoreline. One of the two swarms follows after it, but it seems Gavin has caught the attention of the second swarm as it begins to descend on his splashing position as he fights to swim upstream to the shore.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Mubs attacks make short work of many of the fish creatures in the swarm bearing down on Gavin. Several of the creatures fall skewered into the water around the cleric.
The much diminished swarm slips around Gavin on its way over towards Mub.

((I'm going to assume you cast the spell at the swarm descending on Gavin and not the second swarm over the waters near the beach.))
Mirabel's icy spell flies through the air and freezes the remaining fish creatures bearing down on Gavin's location. The last of the chilled beasts rain down into the waters and are swept downstream by the current, giving Gavin an uninterrupted path to shore. However, whatever Mirabel did seems to have attracted the attention of the second swarm near the beach. With the crackle of static surrounding them, they fly as one through the air straight towards the scaled sorcerer.
Swarm's Tail Strike vs. Mirabel's AC: 24, 18 lightning damage.
Kathra's up next then Peren to finish the round.

Kathra doesn't know what the hell these fish creatures are, but after a full day of dwarven bullshit and niceties she's only too happy to charge in swinging her axe. A little thunder of her own seems to echo the static of the fish.
((Naturally, Kathra would like to rage))
Attack: 19 Damage: 8, plus the fishies make a Dex saving throw (DC 14): 7 to save against 6 lightning damage.
((Yep, that'll do. As soon as everyone else checks in, I'll reveal the results of your aquatic adventure.))

((That was some pitiful lighting damage fish monsters!))
Peren - Initiative = 7

Oh right Mub will poll out his bow and take fire at some fish as he move's in to try and cover the wet one.

2Attack: 14 Damage: 10

((No worries))
Mirabel chants some arcane words as frost begins to form around the swarm of fish.
Frostbite: Con Save: 3 vs DC 14; 2 cold damage and disadvantage on its next attack roll.
