"Well, Mina was there at the tavern at the night of the incident, in fact I invited her there to see Mae and Aurora perform. I can simply ask her if she saw anything."The purple-skinned tiefling comments, then looking to the lab coats and hoping for their help with the tracking Guardok suggested.
Mae will keep a half eye out for her green haired friend as she walks Mei back to the dorm, humming a bit along the way and trying to be as pleasant to her as she can be.
Mae doesn't notice any green-haired people at all as the pair head back to the dormitory. It doesn't take too long to arrive and the pair goes upstairs.
The half-elf, in response to Guardok, says, "I don't know the spell." She looks at the gnome. "I could cast it, but I'm sure they did once they noticed it was missing."
"So, if they used the spell when they noticed that the sample was missing, and it's still missing, what would that mean would you think? Could it be that it was destroyed and then can't be located with the spell?" The purple-skinned tiefling asks curiosuly with a polite smile.
"You might be right, but the professor didn't say they tried to locate it. It would be really great if you could try, just in case", Guardok says with a smile. "We would be very grateful".
He suddenly has another thought, "Do you have a place where samples are disposed of?".
The gnome considers just a moment and agrees to Guardok's suggestion. The half-elf says, "There is a place down the hall where samples can be disposed of." The gnome nods. "I'll case it here then walk that direction. The range is 1000 ft. Guess I could make a tour of the building!"
She pulls out a wand from beneath her lab coat. "Now, 74069A, right?" Waving the wand and making a brief incantation she casts the spell. "Hmm, I don't see it, but let's look around a bit." She goes does the hallway to where the disposal is and finds nothing there. "I'll bet outside would be good. I could go around the building." She does this, exiting the building and making a right to start to go around.
"That's amazing. Thanks so much", Guardok says a little more excitedly again. He follows the gnome outside, looking around as he moves, but also keeping an eye on the gnome as well, just in case they notice something and aren't forthcoming.
As the group steps out the doors, Malvyn happens to notice a footprint just off the path. He looks a bit closer and it seems like a rather large shoe with a mark of a bent nail on one edge. It seems like probably a match from the vision Mei had seen.
Not paying attention to this, the gnome continues on, still not finding anything.
"Wait a moment..." the purple-skinned tiefling says to the others still present. "...another footprint here..." he continues, poiniting to it with a clawed finger, his purple tail swaying slightly with excitement. "...just like one of those we found by the pond." Malvyn doesn't want to interfere with the divination spell but quickly tries to see if there are any more footprints around and if he can tell anything about what direction they were heading.
Malvynand Guardokreally can't make out much from the print, other than it's there. When Knaplooks though he can tell that it seems to have been someone coming along the normal path that must have inadvertantly stepped off into the grass beside the walkway. You don't see any additional tracks, likely because they stayed back on the path. But it is clear the owner of the footprint was headed into the building.
"Find anything?"The purple-skinned tiefling asks his floor mates as he futilely looks around on the ground. "We should really try to find the wearer of that shoe, finding that print again can't be a conicidence."
“not much,” he relays the information. “It’s gotta be a shapeshifter, I reckon so. Someone who can get about in the open, along footpaths and into buildings.”
The gnome had continued on, not really noticing the three of you stopping to investigate. The half-elf woman had followed for a bit but stops to look back at what you're doing. "Do you need any help there?"
"I'm not so sure Knap, I mean the print was made by a shoe, right? Shapeshifters can't alter their clothing, can they?", Guardok replies. "It still seems more likely they are using magic to disguise themselves. In which case, the footprints will stay the same".
When the half-elf woman asks if they need anything, he does have a question for them.
"Would anything stop someone from wandering around with a spell of disguise on? I mean if they try to go into official buildings like your lab?".

"Well, destroyed I suppose. Or just taken beyond the reach of the spell," the gnome woman replies. "It did only work within 1000 feet."

"Ooh, good spot, Mal", Guardok says as he too checks out the footprint, trying to figure out where it came from and where it was going.
Not being the best tracker, he looks to Knap, who he assumes is better at this sort of thing.
"What do you think, Knap? You like the wilderness, you are probably a great tracker", he says to inspire his friend.

Knap is a little out of practice but Guardok’s encouragement goes a long way.
