Kira shrugs. "You two following the trail or are we heading back? I'm not going wandering off to who knows where. But I'll wait for you if you like." She waits for a final decision.
Guardok nods firmly and makes the decision to follow the trail, as Mal suggested.
"We shouldn't be long. I hope", he says to Kira, and heads off westward hoping to pick up more signs of the passage of the bandits, or whoever they are.
Guardok and Malvynfollow the path trampled through the brush for a few hundred yards to the west while Kira stays put back at the spot where the bodies were. The pair get to a place where it seems that the group must have split. Some footprints move back towards town, while others start to climb up, roughly paralleling the trail you'd followed.
You've not noticed any blood spots as you continued. (Though you may roll to Investigate or use something like Survival to see if there are any clues.)
Guardok will indeed look for clues. Especially for deeper footprints denoting someone carrying something as heavy as another person. Assuming there is any soft ground here of course.
"Odd that some would head back to town, it means we need to be careful who we tell about this there. We know this wasn't a robbery, what could these people be up to? Do you think the one in the mask was a prisoner, or an ally who got injured?".
"This is a true mystery." Malvyn says as he joins Guardok, checking the tracks for more clues to what happened here. "If someone was dragged it seems unlikely they were dragged into town, but neither does it seem likely they were dragged up the mountain I suppose?"
After some looking, Guardok notes one set of prints that does indeed show signs of someone being carried. Eventually he can resolve it's just one set, heading more or less towards the town.
There are another two sets heading up the mountain.
Malvyn doesn't find any other pieces of evidence that tells him anything new. But looking at the marks, you would imagine they had to have been made sometime yesterday. Since the bodies weren't there when you came up yesterday, they had to have been street that. But it may have only been a few hours later.
Certainly those headed for Silkmeadow might already be there. And the others could be almost anywhere up into the mountains.
"You know, I want to do the right thing here, but I'm less and less convinced there is something more we can do about this unless we start climbing up the mountain again." The purple-skinned tiefling scratches his neck, sounding a bit skeptical about the idea. "If you think we should go on I will of course follow you." He adds with a reassuring smile to Guardok.
"I think whoever carried the mask owner away went to town, so that would be where I would be interested in heading, not back up into mountains", Guardok replies Mal.
"We need to be very careful who we speak to and what we tell them when we get there, too. Shall we head back?".
"Yes, let's head back to town." The purple-skinned tiefling says with a small relieved smile, ready to do just that. He was still intrigued about what had happened here and hoped he would find out. For now he was content with getting back to civilization where he would feel more in his zone of comfort.
Guardok and Malvyn retrace their path back to the main trail where Kira was waiting with Mei. Everyone makes their way back down towards Silkmeadow. But as the sun starts to set, you still have several hours to go.
"Not sure we're going to make it back tonight," Kira says. "Unless you want to keep going into the night?"
It's been a long day traveling to the cave and now back down. You are feeling that's some rest would be welcomed. Except for Mei, who does still feel energetic.
"I don't know, with the threat of murderous bandits the thought of spending the night on the trail is not that appealing. But then, I am starting to feel tired", Guardok says indecisively. "If we are to camp, best we have two take each watch".
He checks out their surroundings as if to make the point.
Malvyn seems a bit disappointed over the prospect of staying in the wilds another night but he tries his best to put a brave face on for the others. "If you think it's best that we spend the night here then that's what we'll do. I will take any watch you tell me to."
Kira shrugs, "I'm good to keep on. Do you folks have a place to stay in the city though? Might be less questions if you put up a tent here. I'm not really sure what you'd find still open to guests at the hour we would get to Silkmeadow. And I apologize, I really cannot just bring you all to my residence. Maybe if it were just Mei."
"Oh", Guardok says in response to Kira. "I guess we have no choice but to camp again then", he adds now resigned to a night out in the wilds. Normally he would be very happy with that situation, but with murderers at large it wasn't ideal right now.
He looks to find a spot and set up the tents.
