The party is barely 100 feet from the dead ogre, now surrounded by the huge dire wolf, two bow-carrying hobgoblins and a goblin boss, while at least three more goblins watch from a distance. Smoke drifts from somewhere behind them, west of the ruined castle. The wolf sniffs the air but does not seem to pick up your scent. The hobgoblins scan the forest for their missing captive but are currently at least temporarily distracted by the massive, dead ogre in front of them. For now, the party remains unnoticed, hidden amongst the bushes on the scrubby wooded slope.
"Do we wait to rescue Kimberley or act now while there is a bit of chaos going on? I'm all for acting now." Jurgen says to the team. "I don't have my spells back yet, or my Steel Defender, but my sword is still sharp."
"Kimberley looked pretty bad," Bryony says. "I think we should try to sneak around them and get back inside the castle. If they're all out here searching for us, it's the perfect opportunity!"
Syzygy quickly assembles an assortment of twigs and a branch or two and a few green sprigs he believes would produce a decent burst of smoke. survival: 17
Syzygy will cast create bonfire on the small pyre when the party has begun to move.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
After Syzygy creates the distraction in the form of a bonfire, Bryony leads the others slowly back toward the castle, moving carefully so as not to make too much noise.
An arcane fire springs up at Syzygy's bidding, and a smoky blaze ensues. Bryony begins to lead the party toward the castle...
But the goblinoid force stands directly between the party and the ruined castle. The party cannot travel directly north toward the castle without openly confronting the wolf, the hobgoblins, and others. And even if they could open the southern postern gate (a door which presumably locked behind them), they would have to openly walk behind the goblinoid force.
They could circle west, where more goblins - and another fire? - await, but where the main castle entrance stands.
Or they could circle east; as far as they last saw, there are no goblins on those sides (although there are arrow slits allowing visibility from within.) However, they have not spotted any obvious entrances on those sides (although a sizable ruined area has not been fully examined along the north face.)
How would you like to approach and then re-enter the castle?
Jurgen drops to one knee and draws the castle, area and enemies on the ground. He points to the north side. I think this is the safest path to try first. What do you all think?
The fire is lit. The party begins to move away before Grol's soldiers notice.
The two hobgoblins and one goblin boss examine the ogre carcass, while the wolf licks its wounds, sniffs the air, and listens. The other three goblins turn away and begin to move northwest. None of them have spotted the smoky fire yet, but your fire begins to grow...
Without any objections, Jurgen begins to lead the tired, wounded party northeast through the brambly woods, skirting the ruined castle from a safe distance.
Syzygy, Bryony, Quinn, and Jurgen continue north. All remains quiet. You have lost sight of the goblinoids and dire wolf on the other side of the castle. This side of the ruins is fairly intact, at least on the ground floor.
The party continues north, and then begins to circle west again. There are no obvious doors, gates, or other entrances along the west or north faces, although there are areas of complete collapse that could hide gaps or holes. There is no sign of activity on this side of the ruined castle.

(What's your plan?)
Syzygy wonders if he's being led to his doom by a kobold and a halfling.
"I'm in."
"Would firesmoke be too obvious a distraction to draw their attention further into the woods, as we swing around the back?"
"I think that would be a great idea."

Continue on north then west. We'll be keeping an eye out for both anyone and any entrances we could use.

Are the shackled?
Locked up in a cell?”
