Garrent is most happy to talk during the ride. The topic of mounted warfare is a favorite of his. Discussion about lance tactics with companions vs as a lone horseman fills the afternoon ride. Chadwick and Garrent are in the lead of the procession along the road so they can more easily discuss.
A roadhouse is found for the night well after the sunset and the last glow of day is on the horizon. The horses and mules are tended to in the stable. Rooms are arranged and hot meals and ale are on the table. It is rather basic with a pork and root vegetable stew in a thin brown gravy, coarse bread and butter. But the ale washes it down well and a day on the road will make most any hot meal taste good.
The night is uneventful. Gaius is up before first light. He has roused the stablehand and the mounts are all lined up to the hitching posts in front of the inn. A quick meal of bread, cheese and boiled eggs is washed down with small beer and you are back in the saddle.
(( Only Hoid is in the room. Need Perceptions from the Not Hoid or Chadwick portion of the group. ))
In the afternoon of the second day there is trouble on the road. The road has come near a small, shallow river with foothills to the opposite side that have a steep slope. Two natural ramps allow access to the raised ground above the slope. Clumps of trees dot the area as well as intermingled bushes. When the deal goes down, Hoid recognizes this as a pretty good place for an ambush. All but Gaius, Gohumbee, Trolkarl and Kragen are surprised by the attack. Surprised persons are not able to react or take actions until after their turn. On their turn, they can take an action. Surprised persons are attacked at Advantage until the end of their turn.
Orcs spring up from areas of cover all about you. Some charge towards you. Others remain in place and attack with heavy crossbows, or, stand with large shields raised to provide cover for themselves and the crossbowmen.
Cast Mage Armor. dismount raspy such that he forms a wall of horse flesh between me and orcs.
(If I read end of surprise note right : “On their turn, they can take an action.”. If Starker can’t, in fact, take an action then he will dismount (a movement?) and be prepared to react with ‘Shield’)
(( Cut an paste from the 2014 PHB: If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn ends. ))
My mistake. I should have passed you by on this round. Starker remains mounted, but can now use reactions.
An orc charges from the E side of them map to the road ahead of you, Dodging.
A mage casts Ice Storm in the area of effect shown on the map. All in area must make a DC 15 DEX save or take 9 Bludgeoning and 7 Cold Damage. Chadwick and the pack mule make their saves taking 7 damage. The rest take 16 damage in total. The riding horses are felled by this. Starker makes his DC 10 DEX save and lands on his feet. Gaius fails, landing hard for another 6 bludgeoning damage and is now Prone.
Chadwick surprise round. He can now take reactions.
Orc34 fires heavy crossbow at Trolkarl, To hit = 21 (Critical) for 18 piercing damage.
Orc12 and Orc16 fire at Chadwick, to hit = 19 and 10. Both miss.
Gneuman and Hoid may now take reactions.
Orc34 fires at Gaius at Disadvantage, to hit = 16, 7. Missing.
Gohumbee dismounts and fires his crossbow at Orc26 at Disadvantage, to hit = 8, 22. A miss.
Gaius stands and casts Chromatic Orb as a Lightning spell at the orc with the magic weapon, EW-Orc42. To hit = 9 (Nat 1). It flies wide of the mark.
A imposing Dragonborn warrior steps from the tree line to the N. He is wearing plate armor and wields a halberd and a heavy crossbow. He fires at Hoid, to hit = 4 (Nat 1). Missing.
Two orcs close in on Hoid and attack, To hit = 15 and 15. Both miss.
Orc saving DEX saves = 20, 20, 20, 17, 7 and 19. All but one saves. The failure dies. The survivors are badly injured.
An orc to the E closes. The hail stones making Difficult Terrain have melted away.
The mage pulls what looks like a small stone from his pouch and crushes it. Following this there is an eruption of stone and soil between your group and the mage. A large, bipedal creature made of living stone and soil rises up in this area. You can see that the mage is speaking, but he is too far away for you to hear. The summoned creature then starts moving towards your group.

Chadwick to act
Chadwick yells to Starker "Don't worry buttercup I'll kill the big bad mage for you." Then laughs at his own joke quip.
To the Purple Dragon he says "Wanna go mage hunting?" As he goes riding past him.
For a bonus action he casts hunters mark on orc 44.
Assuming advantage for being mounted and dodge cancel each other out.
Attack 1: To hit 21 dam: 8+4 + 1 (HM) total 13
Attack 2: To hit 12 dam: 21+4+1 total 26 but figure a miss.
He attacks at green squiggly from 10' to avoid an AOO, then continues his charge towards the mage.
Apparently the gods are punishing Chadwick with bad rolls for being too cheeky.
