It's going to be a bit before the battle map is up. Today, I have a lot of important phone calls and e-mails to deal with. And building a battle map takes a bit of time. So I'll probably have to deal with that when the offices I need to contact close for the day.
Uhh, was it? I thought overall the plan was in action, attack if they try something.
I see that Sera made a point that they might attack us or someone else later on. Hastos would make the argument that this is a problem for then, not now. They may just as easily be more receptive to assisting in the future.
Sure we can. Sera hesitate. See that the rest not ready to spring into action. Now the Newt demand all the water. We give away that? And that big Strider not gonna be satisfied with a little Jackal carcass?

Finding a container might be tricky, but Create Water is a spell that exists.
The jackal was definitely just a snack for the Giant Strider. It's still definitely hungry. But if we decide to keep the peace, the Firenewt will accept the terms if it means they get a buttload of water to heat up.
I think folks should just go with their gut. Hastos will wait, but if someone just decides to start the fight because they feel strongly, I'm all in.
It'll be chicken for dinner. :-)
Or a dino-mount if y'all can beat it calm and get it to behave later. Animal Handling checks can be used to intuit a trained animals intentions, and change its attitude toward you. Since it's a mount, you can definitely assume it's trained. It's currently Hostile towards the party. But if the Firenewt is defeated, and you can provide it a steady supply of treats, care, food, and water, you can change its demeaner towards you. It might be a handy companion if you can win it over. Kasi may disapprove, but the choice to appease Kasi's ego is entirely up to you.
It would be nice to know if I'm throwing together a battle map.
If you're unsure what to do, but want to know if your character has insight that you don't, feel free to roll a WIS check. If you want, you can use Insight, Perception, or Survival to perform the check. I will base the information on your character's alignment, backstory, and encounter context to tell you whether your character thinks it would be better to dispatch these creatures with haste, or send them on their merry way with jackal scraps and water.
Just clarify that the check is for strategy intuition for the encounter.
Kasi: Fight... would be happier if that newt was already dead.
Sera: Fight? Willing to change if the group prefers peace.
Hastos: Negotiate? Willing to change if the group prefers to fight.
Sharn: Fight. Not willing to make the first move.
Merkas: Fight?
Majority in the OOC reads fight. But the IC is reading Negotiate. I'm assuming OOC is just discussion, and IC is the vibe. Kasi views herself as a servant in this dynamic and will not attack unless ordered to, or in self-defense. If the majority confirms to fight, I'll get the battle map ready.
Ok we got a lot of people that are on wait and see. Merkas initially is concerned about the injured strider and desires to help. But given the responses from Kasi he’s second guessing given the newt any help. If anyone has anything to assist Merkas making the shift to battle from peacemaking please do. Sharn with that incredible insight maybe. Sorry to keep you in suspense about it IT. Would be nice to see the layout but it’s not needed if we can get this resolved safely.
Also if your post hadn't been crossed out Merkas would not have let Kasi go near the newt by herself. Not under these circumstances. So it would have been likely that would have kicked off the battle pretty quickly.
Hey I.T. does the limp on the Strider looked staged as if the newt trained it to act that way to gain the compassion/trust of unwary travelers?
The leg injury appears real. There's swelling around the ankle joint. While it's not terribly debilitating, it could slow the Giant Strider down and reduce its HP.
Here is a first draft of the Battle Map. I'm hoping it'll give you a more clear view of the situation. Do I need to make any positional corrections? The glowy stuff represents Merkas's Dancing Light spell.
Kasi's smile...

We can go on a bit more. I no mind a change in plan.
I say we just jump them now. It's not like giving them the water is gonna give us that much of an edge on them.
If we had a rogue that could shank the newt as they get next to it, that'd be different.

I mean, I know Sharn is gonna go on the offensive, but he can't really start the confrontation.

Oh, Sharn said his piece. You know, about the newt being a shrewd bandit and a liar.
