he moves close to listen to their conversation. He imagines that he doesn’t speak the language so he, being the talented halfling that he is psychically broadcast every word he doesn’t understand to the group In real time.
Elmo continues forward while darting from shadow to shadow...to the group, even those with Darkvision to aid them, it appears as though Elmo vanished off of this plane of existence. They all know that he is in fact there...or they at least pretend to know and actually just hope he's not left the party forever without a trace...The group moves forward, not knowing any better, or faring any worse for the decision. Elmo then communicates back to the group that he's close enough to make out what the Dwarves are saying!
While not having any previous knowledge of the Dwarven language, save for the very colorful language that was presented before him long ago in a lively tavern after copious amounts of ale was consumed...This tavern's name was besides the matter at hand however and a tale best told by Elmo while participating in the 1st Annual Gracklstugh Red Dragon Brewfest! -Shameless plug for your upcoming side-quest in Gracklstugh!
Elmo repeats every word he hears and you can tell by the tone of his voice that he's trying to emulate the three distinct tones of voices that he's hearing. Morgana and Leon understand that this is the case while Gremryl, Hemeth, and Stool think that Elmo is just having a really hard time communicating back telepathically. Unfortunately for Elmo, his awful Dwarven accent roughly translates to Gremryl and Hemeth as the following:
Voice (Dwarf) 1 - "...the goat is pregnant with ocean?"
Voice (Dwarf) 2 - "Yes! Baelun pissed meatballs."
Voice (Dwarf) 3 - "No! Baelun meat horse wagon. No (Neither?) Adbar Faerun is Velkynvelve dark."
Voice (Dwarf) 2 - "No. No Velkynvelve prisoner like Gracklstugh. Blingdenstone. Months of darkness."
Voice (Dwarf) 3 - "Months of darkness. No Velkynvelve."
Voice (Dwarf) 1 - "We're from Adbar. Not argument (arguing?) on this. Goat ocean."
Elmo hears the names of familiar places but recognizes few other words with any confidence that he's actually recited them well enough to be perfectly understood. Elmo does however understand the emotions behind the voices and he's incredibly sure that these are in fact Dwarves, and very likely to be of good-nature. In particular he senses the emotions of exhaustion and fear, while also sensing a strong determination and proudness to being alive against all odds down here. Elmo believes that this group could be peacefully approached.
Elmo goes back to the group and grabs Hemeth as he is a also a sneaky roguish type and he can understand their language. The plan is to get Hemeth to listen to the conversation, then make a decision from there.
Hemeth hesitates to move forward with Elmo citing something about possibly not being a good idea since his kind (Duerger) don’t exactly have the best historical relationships with other dwarves...
Gremryl who perked up at the name of his home citadel be named get up to go and see what this is all about. But seeing Elmo sneak off with Hemmeth. To greet Dwarves..that makes no sense.
"Ye want to sneak off then ey.. not ask the only dwarf in the group..well then. I'll just wait for yall to come back and ask me help then.. halfings and duergar meeting a group of dwarves.. what could possibly go wrong"...
Reluctantly, Hemeth moves forward with Elmo until he's within earshot of the voices farther down the tunnel. Here's what Hemeth overhears in Dwarven, translated to Common for the group:
Voice 1 - "...rest here for a bit. It's the first time we've seen a clean source of water in weeks."
Voice 2 - "It's good to rest a bit. Escaping from Gracklstugh was no easy feat."
Voice 3 - "Yeah, except we have no way of getting back to Adbar! How are we to warn King Harbromm in time?!"
Voice 1 - "Let's just figure out how to get to the surface first. Then we'll figure out how to warn the King. Blingdenstone has routes to the surface. We'll head there.
Voice 3 - "Ok. So...how do we get to Blingdenstone then?
Voice 1 - "We've made it this far. We'll figure it out."
Voice 2 - "I'm tired and gonna take a nap. Who's on the first watch?"
Voice 1 - "Go ahead, you two. I'll take first watch."
Voices 2 and 3 - "Thanks, Captain!"
Voice 1 - "Aye."
The sound of running water and some scraping of steel, possibly the sharpening of a weapon is all that Hemeth and Elmo hear now.
Good news Grem mate! These look like your people! Stop being such a gloomy gustav and go make us some introductions! Or do ye think that they would prefer a proper halfling greeting? Ive heard its the finest around."
"oh they be Adbarran dwarves ye say?? huh.. fancy that! its not like you have a mighty Palladin who happens to be FROM Adbar eh?" He mumbles .. "Let me, Lads.. I heard a halfings greeting is never as big as they say it is or as satisfying eh!"
to Hemmeth "Stay here lad, till I call you over. It be about time we mend this rift between Duergar and dwarf.. one brother at a time. "
Gremryl stands straight and walks up to the encampment Benny still lit with Green Flame, shield reflecting the holy flame of moradin..
"Hail and well met lads.. any of you have a skin of ale or wine for a fellow dwarf and his companions ey?"
Immediately, all three dwarves are up and at the battle-ready. Not sure what to make of a Dwarf, bearing a mace that's somehow on fire...a green fire at that.
Voice 1 - "Standfast, Dwarf. State your clan name and your business down here in the Underdark. We've yet to meet a non-greyskin Dwarf...but we've also yet to meet anything friendly down here either.
The other two dwarves stand tall (for Dwarves), in front of their captain and with makeshift spears presented towards Gremryl.
Gremryl undeterred " Bah! put down ye dwarven toothpicks lad. I was in the Iron Guard and ran with the gut buster brigade in Adbar and campaigned during the Orcish invasion. I was also captain of the Adbar High swim team. Gremryl Stonebreaker me name, former gut buster, now Palladin for Moradin. I've been down here spreading Moradins blessing on the fiends about this place if ye get me drift. I've been down here for a bit, made some friends, and have news ye be needing to hear and a tale or two to tell. I'd be interested in hearing yours. Ye put down the weapons lad. We are all friends here..."
”Elmo didn’t Hemmeth translate that these fellows broke out of the town we are headed to? I know they are from where Grem is from but can they be trusted?”
Undeterred as well, and impressing Gremryl with their willingness to die as a warrior than surrender to a stranger, the captain answers back.
Dwarf Captain - "Stonebreaker, you say? From the Iron Guard, you claim, is it? Aye, lad, you may look the part...but answer me this before we BOTH put away our arms...If the citadel were under siege from the damned Orcs...what sound do we hear when we need to bear arms in defense of the Citadel? Every Iron Guard soldier would know the answer to that question..." His weary-eyes remain fixed on you, and his ears await your response. The other two maintain their posture, likely waiting for the Captain's orders to stand down or prepare to defend themselves.
“Elmo she has not spoken to me until recently. I started having nightmares and she was there to guide me back to the light. Well her and my buddy Stool here. But just because she wasn’t speaking to me doesn’t me she wasn’t there the whole time”
Gremryl eyes the Captain now with more annoyance, maybe this abnoxious dwarf could use a wallop..
"Listen here lad, I was clashing shield and smiting orcs when ye was still mining for the rocks in ye pants boy.. the Horn of Adbar be sounding... and if YE be from Adbar.. what be King Harbromm's insignia? And mind you I grow tired of this. Ye be me kin, but I dont suffer fools dwarven or not lightly lads. I follow Moradin and he put ye in me path. "
At this, the Captain pushes past the two Dwarves with their makeshift spears, mace still in hand, and walks straight up to Gremryl. Gremryl stands fast, having already seized up this Dwarf who claims he's from Adbar and believing him not to be a threat. The Captain comes right up to Gremryl's face and stands about a half-foot taller than the Paladin. He cracks a smile and says:
Captain Dwarf - "The Forge-Mark of the king, an upright single-bladed handaxe enclosed by a circle of flames, in red on a silver field. Now, how about you turn that carrion crawler, attention-getter there off and join me my pals for a drink. We'll share our stories over fresh fish we caught in this river." Turning back to his group, he orders to stand down. "Weapons away but keep them at the ready for our true enemies. This one is one of us and will be treated as such."
The two Dwarves immediately, although cautiously, stand down and set their weapons against the wall. Within reach, in case they need to retrieve them, however not in close proximity to be of any threat.
