Alarien carefully prods and pokes around the hearth and manages to press an eyeball while pulling on a tooth and there is an audible click from the panel and a small cupboard sized door swings slightly open. After it is swung the rest of the way open inside written in the flowing script of elvish is the following:
Where sword and shield should fear to tread,
Wit and Wisdom shall climb instead;
Yet, when deft and skill will meet a grisly end,
Armor and might shall boldly ascend.
There is nothing else in the shallow alcove.

As for me, I choose to believe that an extinct thunder lizard is running a game of Dungeons & Dragons via Twitter!
Alerian looks skeptically at the stairs, "Just a shot-in-the-dark, but I think it means that we take the secret passage behind that curtain first, then comes the smashing and charging."

Okay, so I didn't help matters with my mispost, but there is some confusion. Alarien DID manage to find the mechanism that opened the hidden panel that Asgar found. There ISN'T a secret passage behind it, merely a small hidden alcove, not much bigger than a typical medicine cabinet. Inside the alcove was the message, written in the soft flowing script elvish script. There is nothing else in the alcove besides the message.

As Asgar ascends the stairs he can feel magic flow through him, searching his heart and mind, probing his thoughts and feelings. He sways a bit and a bout of vertigo washes over him but he pushes forward and after what seems like an eternity he reaches the top of the stairs safely.
So each of you can now, ponder the mysterious message in the alcove, attempt to follow Asgar up the stairs, try to climb the other set of stairs, or you can do something else...

Alerian began to see the pattern forming for the stairs. Giving a ndge to Leb, he nodded after Asgar and Thievan, "I believe that's your way up." Sorting out his own choice proved more complicated. With little recourse, he opted to climb the opposite staircase.

Which set of stairs does he climb?
And there ISN't a secret passage, there is a hidden compartment with the message.
As for me, I choose to believe that an extinct thunder lizard is running a game of Dungeons & Dragons via Twitter!
"Wait Asgar, I prefer Alerian's point of view, lets find a way to open this secret passage, Leb can you try again?"
"Yeah I rather prefer trying that. Our friends here " she points to the corpses " didn't have much luck with that."

Here is the message repeated for ease:

Wit and Wisdom shall climb instead;
Yet, when deft and skill will meet a grisly end,
Armor and might shall boldly ascend.

Asgar hesitates for a moment, looks at the others and continues to move up the stairs.
[He's walking up on the stairs where Leb had already deactivated one of the traps.]

"Then, we could have find a way at the end" Thieven puts off his shield and start to step along the same stairs.
