The *clack, clack-clack, clack-clack-clack* of the feyspiders movements are almost as disconcerting as the shroud of whispers that seems to hang about the ararchnid and its target both. Vaken's alien foe springs upwards towards his midsection with fangs wide, its blade-like mandibles savagely ripping into the goliath's flesh, the weight of the hound-sized creature bearing the large cook to the ground below the over-sized blue-grey arachnid.
Nearby, the other feyspider, disracted and surrounded, manages to settle on a target, leaning forward to *snap* at the Orlys's leg despite its clear hesitation. The distraction forced on it by the bard's spell, as well as the bugbears own dogged determination not to die here in this cold, dark cave, is sufficient to cause the creature's attack to miss, the disorientated feyspider thrashing its head about in frustration.'

Here is Orlys' move, pre-posted... It's very basic, and applicable to all sorts of situations: hit something with his big stick.
The bugbear will grimace and lift his maul again, trying to bring it down on a spider, any spider.
If feyspider3 is still alive when Kay has gone, Orlys will continue his raged whacking with another attempt to pound it (+2 Str dmg from Rage): 23 to hit, for 11 bludgeoning damage.
If feyspider3 is dead, he will turn and charge feyspider2, moving to the SW corner from it before mauling it.
If both are dead, he will just lean on his maul and pant.

Despite his sorry condition, Orlys hurls himself into a run along the second cavern's Southern boulder-strewn wall, coming up a little beyond but still alongside the feyspider to bring his maul up and over one shoulder in a mighty two-handed chop down upon the centre of the creature's chitin covered back with a resounding *CRACK* that sounds like the smashing of a giant egg. Instantly forgetting its intended human prey, the arachnid attempts to turn in Orlys' direction, only to stumble and collapse, rolling upside down and quite dead at the bugbear's feet, its eight legs curling inwards.
At the final foe's death, the furious but clearly exhausted warrior slumps to one knee, his breath heaving in and out like small frosted clouds. Looking around, you all realise that there are, for the moment at least, no further enemies in the chamber to fight. Glancing around, you see a long wall of collapsed earth and rocks to the South, the body of a dead horse to the North and two more large masses of webbing further to the cavern's East. 'Kestrell looks around at the spider carcasses, then down at Vaken.'
"Well done men and lady! Those are the biggest spiders I have ever seen."
'Turning to the bugbear.'
"And you there, hello bugbear. I haven't seen one of your kind in a while. Tell me, are you friend or just an enemy of my spider enemies? If the former, do you have a name?"
'Kestrell bends to Vaken and casts Cure Wounds, healing him for 5. He takes out his waterskin, pours a little into Vakens mouth and when he notices his eyes start to flutter says.'
"Vaken, my good cook, we've got to stop meeting like this. I'm sure you would rather awaken to the sight of a beautiful, long haired, maiden nursing you back to consciousness. Unfortunately, you have got me instead! How about an extra serving of bacon for me tomorrow morning?"
'Kestrell finishes with a twinkle in his eye and a wink.'
The giant hairy bugbear slumps to the ground next to his maul and the dead spider, smiling weakly at Kestrell. With his sharp teeth and matted fur, it is more grimace than cheer. When he speaks, it is with a gruff, low voice, but he speaks Common well, for a monster.
"Aye, I've a name, human. I am grateful to you and yours for freeing me, but we should escape this cave while we can, and make friends later." And he begins to struggle to his feet, leaning on his maul, only to sink down again with a groan.

Perturbed by everything that has happened and happened quickly, Virtoris walks up to the slumped over bugbear.
"Well, you seem friendly enough," Virt says as he touches the creature on its arm. "Hopefully, this will help ye feel better. I'm not a cleric, but me spell should work fine."
4 Healing to the bugbear.
"My name is Virt, we're sailors from a ship called the Shore Shark. We have to make our way through this cave, for reasons I can't quite explain. But if you help us, as we've helped you...well, I am sure we will all get out of this alive."
Virt looks around at the crew to try and see what they feel about his words to the hurt creature.

"Alright, let's keep the names to ourselves then, Bugbear. We shall make with the friends later."
'Kestrell looks around ,and sees Virt healing the bugbear.'
"How's everyone else doing? Any significant injuries? I am feeling quite sick, actually. I think that spider may have poisoned me."
'After listening to Virt.'
"Let's not beat around the bush. We need a book. A book that is supposedly in this cave. Have you seen it, Bugbear? If not, help us find it and we may all get out of this cave alive."
'Kestrell sits back down and takes a long swig of the waterskin he used on Vaken.'
Virt kneels next to Kestrell and gives him a look over, "Noted, friend. Yes, a book..." He says as he peers into Kestrell's eyes, moving his head back and forth. "But we could use the help, we're already depleting our resources. I am afraid I only have access to one more healing spell. Please help us, Mr. Buggy Bear." He knocks his hammer lightly on Kestrell's knees. "Plus, we did save you. Wouldn't want to pull that debt card on a new friend, not when they can repay it unspoken."
He stands up after looking Kestrell over and looks at the bugbear, "What do you say?"

"How you doing Vaken?"
'At Kay's request, Kestrell stands up, although still hunched over from the pain in his stomach, and holds the lamp out in front of him, peering into the darkness.'

A'ro just looked at his companions as he watched their interaction "Seems like we have a very interesting task ahead of us - I agree that we shouldn't touch the webs or burn them. Can we carve one of the venom sacks off these spiders for the woman, maybe take all three?"His attention turns to Orlys "We shouldn't think like that - if we think death is coming, we are giving her an invitation."
He wouldn't show it through his calm composure, but inside he was worried for the party. Besides the addition of the bugbear he could say that most of them were growing on them with their unique quirks. He just walked over to Kay and put his hand on her shoulder "Thanks for taking the lead..." he freezes as if catching himself from saying something "you doing alright, you seem a little shaken?"
'Kestrell bends to Vaken and casts Cure Wounds, healing him for 5. He takes out his waterskin, pours a little into Vakens mouth and when he notices his eyes start to flutter says.'

Vaken sits up and looks around, his head still fuzzy. As he rises up he looks to Kestrell,"Twice in one day you've saved me. You would think by now I'd realize I'm no fighter. But sometimes my blood runs a bit hot and I forget myself. Thank you friend. You shall not want for bacon tomorrow nor the day after."

'Peering around as she once again slides into the shadows that pool thickly near the walls of these caverns, The first thing that Kay notices is that the bright cerulean blue of the feyspider's eyes has faded in death to a dull navy. Crouching to pick up the dagger that she had thrown, Kay is a little dismayed to find the leather grip burnt away and the blade warped as though by a great heat. Moving to look about the room in the limited light of Kestrell's lantern, the lithe rogue notices the two thickened masses of web even denser than the one that held Orlys. These concentrations of webbing fill the Eastern corners of the cavern, though thick strands also hug the ceiling and upper walls of the chamber, similar to the previous chamber. The observant waif does notice that the mostly natural cavern does exhibit similarities to the stone pillar outside, with a few flatter areas of stone interspersed about the cavern.
Disinterested in the long wall-like barrier of rocks and boulders to the south, the young sail monkey notices the relatively intact corpse of a brown riding mare, a tan-leather saddle and riding bag still cinched about to its back by straps that encircle its chest and somewhat distended stomach... a stomach that seems to move slightly in a wave like motion before Kay's very eyes...'

"What say we walk forward some more, maybe not touch as many webs along the way?" He says matter of factly. Maybe even pointedly, though it wouldn't be directed to anyone but himself.
'Seeing no exits from where he stands, Virt moves forward to join his companions further ahead, glancing about as he considers which way to go in this strange and hostile environment. Seeing the long obstructing wall of collapsed earth and stone to the South, the lean ships mage notices that while many of the boulders are torso sized or larger, these larger rocks are covered by a blanket of fist-to-skull sized stones.
Glancing around the chamber, Virt notices the rigid body of the dead steed, the poor creature's hind and forelegs outstretched as though it died in great agony. The attached riding saddle and travel bags look intact, and the iron bit still lies between the equine beasts rictus-clenched teeth, its flat eyes wide-staring into oblivion. Virt notices the end of what looks like a few metal links protruding from the saddle bag, as well as the sickly-sour scent of rotted meat and vegetables exhuding from the dead animal's general direction. About to turn away, the tall blue man spots movement, like a strange bubbling within the rib cage and beneath the dead hide of the deceased mount...'
[OOC] If Kay and/or Virt raise an alarm about the movement within the dead body of the horse, all characters are able to see it. After noticing it, all PCs have 1 rnd to take action (inc. standard action, move, bonus, etc.)
Due to the shortage of light sources and the unlikelihood of wanting to be left isolated in here, unless otherwise stated, I will group you all between battles.
[OOG] *FYI - for positioning reference on battle maps from now on, the bottom left square will be designated 1/1, with the vertical line being numbered row #/ and the horizontal line being numbered column /#:
E.g. On the current battlemap below, Orlys is at 2/11, Vaken 3/10, A'ro 4/10, Virt 4/12, Kay 4/14 and Kestrell 3/14. This system will be used regardless of whether or not there are terribly executed numbered scribbles along either 'axis'. :p

Glancing around, you see a long wall of collapsed earth and rocks to the South, the body of a dead horse to the North and two more large masses of webbing further to the cavern's East. Additionally, you see the three hound-sized bodies of the dead feyspiders and the bleeding and motionless form of the goliath Vaken, lying half beneath the curled up feyspider that Orlys just slew.'
[OOC] While all three feyspiders are dead and no further enemies are currently visible, we are still in combat and still acting in initiative order. Until he is healed or stabilised, Vaken will need to continue making death saves.
*Kestrell is up, then Vaken, then A'ro, then Virt.

The Bugbear
The giant hairy bugbear slumps to the ground next to his maul and the dead spider, smiling weakly at Kestrell. With his sharp teeth and matted fur, it is more grimace than cheer. When he speaks, it is with a gruff, low voice, but he speaks Common well, for a monster.
"Aye, I've a name, human. I am grateful to you and yours for freeing me, but we should escape this cave while we can, and make friends later." And he begins to struggle to his feet, leaning on his maul, only to sink down again with a groan.

Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
((OOG THE DICE ROLLER STRIKES AGAIN!!! smh ))
"...Debts must always be paid, sometimes in more than blood and gold. But this is Ordo Ursa," Ren places his hand on Erakas's chest, right where the Dragonborn's heart is. "Right here. And it always has been and always will be. Don't ever forget that. Because I won't."

"Yep, definitely not feeling good. Damn spiders!"
((OOG This next roll is untrained))

'Kay takes a moment to steel herself for the task at hand, shivering from the dark and cold.' "D...do what you will, f...friend bugbear, but we h...have a task to complete. Can s...someone give us more light ahead?" 'She does her best to fade into the shadows once more, crouching low, her bright orange eyes glowing slightly when they catch the lamplight as she searches for the hidden tome.'

The Bugbear
At Virt's healing touch, he shakes himself over, and then stands, hefting his maul. "Thank you, Virt," he says in his low basso, with nary a glance in Kestrell's direction. "I am Orlys," he pronounces it or-lee. "T' way back's no walk on the beach neither, so it be best not to go lone. I'll help you to clear the way fore." He will stand to the front, and wait for the rest to be ready, then he will lead with his dark vision. (And that terrible Perception score he rolled.)

'At the gentle tap on his knee, Kestrell's leg reflexively shoots out, perhaps with a little extra force than is normal for a reflexive jerk.'
"Ouch! What was that for? I said I was poisoned not a broken leg!"
"How you doing Vaken?"
'At Kay's request, Kestrell stands up, although still hunched over from the pain in his stomach, and holds the lamp out in front of him, peering into the darkness.'
"Alright, Bugbear, what do we see?"
Orlys answers darkly, as he peers ahead, "A dark, chittering death. I see no book, if that'n what you all seek."

"I don't see a book either, but me don't reckon it'd be out in the open all like. That be too easy, yeah?" Virt chuckles a bit, finally feeling a little more at ease since coming to. "What say we walk forward some more, maybe not touch as many webs along the way?" He says matter of factly. Maybe even pointedly, though it wouldn't be directed to anyone but himself.

A'ro just looked at his companions as he watched their interaction "Seems like we have a very interesting task ahead of us - I agree that we shouldn't touch the webs or burn them. Can we carve one of the venom sacks off these spiders for the woman, maybe take all three?" His attention turns to Orlys "We shouldn't think like that - if we think death is coming, we are giving her an invitation."

Vaken sits up and looks around, his head still fuzzy. As he rises up he looks to Kestrell, "Twice in one day you've saved me. You would think by now I'd realize I'm no fighter. But sometimes my blood runs a bit hot and I forget myself. Thank you friend. You shall not want for bacon tomorrow nor the day after."

DM - Waterdeep Dragon Heist PbP
