“Ho there, Fisherman Fenwader, I think you have hooked a live one, or maybe just its excrement!”
"No such luck. Must be usin' the wrong bait. If only we had Qivys's noisy parrot, we'd finally get some use of him!" He coils the sticky rope up on the stump of the mast and plucks his spear from the deck. He maneuvers over by Oceanus, trying to get a look at the bug. If Peri's Devil Sight sees it hiding in the corner (Perception21) he'll again poke the spear into the deck and take careful aim with the crossbow (26 for 9). If he can't see it, it's probably time to reroll Initiative.
((edit: Oh sure, roll a 20 when it might not even count! But that's an extra 3 if it does.))

Moving into the room with his glowing rapier first, Gerrard heads towards the debris near the staircase, hoping the light might reveal the Ettercap, but suspecting it may have retreated down the staircase already.

If he doesn't see any enemies or get attacked, Gerrard will move back to where the spider was and try to retrieve his throwing daggers, wiping them off on a convenient fabric before secreting them in their hidden locations on his person.

"Well I didn't see that coming!" Kei offers a light clap at Gerrard's knife throwing skills. "You would make a fine carnival act. Mighty Gerrard, the knife throwing knave" he teases the noble with a flourish of hands and the hem of his robe. He looks quite like an idiot in doing so, but can't help but imitate the fighter. "Perhaps Master Winkletoes could be your attractive assistant. Peri & Gerry. Yes that's it!"
Whilst recovering from his own joke, the unfunny bard falls into position behind Peri. In his mind he's tracing the sigils needed for a quick ranged spell, ready to hurl at the Insectoid.
The party begins to file into the debris-filled cabin. All is quiet; the ettercap is nowhere to be seen. The giant spider is dead; Gerrard retrieves and cleans his blades.
Here's a recap of the room:
A rough stone altar dominates this cabin. Strange markings cover its surface, dried mud cakes the floor around it, and humanoid skulls ring the wall above, each mounted on a wooden spike. The corners of this room are piled with garbage and debris — crudely cut wooden logs, smashed furniture, torn sacks, shattered crates, and small piles of dried palm fronds. A staircase descends from the southeast corner, and an acrid odor fills the air.
He activates his eldritch sight and looks around for any magical auras. He begins moving some of the debris around with the butt of his spear. If this was once the captain's cabin there might still be charts or a logbook that could shed light on the ship's travels and the source of the infestation. (Investigation1)
((Oof, the only time a 2 is worse than a Nat 1. Peri pokes the trash pile and forgets what he's even looking for!))
Dwal did spot a couple of books earlier, but Peri finds the view out of a small porthole much more enticing. Dark clouds over black ocean makes a dramatic, moody composition.
There are no magical auras emanating from this cabin. He continues to pick up something else belowdecks, about midship.
Looking around at the clutter, Gerrard sighs and shines his glowing blade around a few dark corners looking for the box, not thinking to look for log books or anything.
If he finds nothing, he will head over to the stairs and watch downwards, weapons at the ready.
Investigation in the room: 18
Perception down the stairs: 13
“Let me know when we are ready to head down, unless you want to check the forward cabin first,” says Gerrard.

Gerrard investigates the cluttered mess. It's a shrine or altar of some sort (feel free to make a religion check) and the skulls are cracked, weathered, and obviously old.
Gerrard's keen eyes soon find the books Dwal had spotted; opening them he discovers them to be the ship’s ledger and the captain’s log, both written in Common.
Concealed by the mud and litter on the deck, he also finds a small sack - perhaps a ritualistic offering of some sort - containing ten red jewels that look potentially valuable (feel free to make an Intelligence check to judge the gemstones.)
Finally, peering down the stairs, he sees another cabin on the lower deck. The floor is covered with bones and debris, crawling with tiny spiders (of a different variety than the ones that you recently fought.)

Gerrard:
"Master Fenwader, it looks like the captain's log books are here," says Gerrard, handing them over to the aspiring captain. He looks at the gems and tosses them to Dwal for safekeeping and possible appraisal, saying, "This looks like it could be some type of shrine to an evil diety". He then says, "Looks like more spiders below. Let me know when we are ready to proceed."

"Master Fenwader, it looks like the captain's log books are here," says Gerrard, handing them over to the aspiring captain.
"Oh, the logs! Yeah, we'll need to look at those when we get a minute." He tucks the books into his pack and walks over beside Gerrard to check out the spiders. He gives a small shudder ((not looking for your "small" jokes!)). "I can fire off a blast down there, see what happens when we rattle the nest? I'm not all that keen on gettin' covered in spiders again."
"Works for me, Master Fenwader," says Gerrard, dropping into a defensive stance and shifting a bit to the side to give Peri a clear line of sight for his spell.

Damn my infernal luck. Never finding the jewels or the coins. The sour bard continues to berate himself as he checks the places already searched by the others. Always first to get hit, other than pincushion Peri, and always last to the loot. Gotta turn your life around man!
"Wait. Let's shed a little light down there before we head down." He pulls a bolt from its case and, whilst holding his medallion, runs a hand over the shaft. Gerrard is glad to be rid of the sack of red stones, as they remind him of spider eggs.
Kei tosses a magically-lit bolt down the stairs. The spiders scatter, revealing nothing but stained decking littered with bones and debris. Nature check: 18
He doesn't know what to make of the spiders, but they look small and appear nonaggressive, not too unlike those he has seen in an attic at home.
Glad to see the spiders look fairly harmless and nothing leaping to attack Kei's bolt, Peri decides it's still worthwhile to give the hive a little poke. He aims at a chunk of debris with some spiders on it and hits it with an eldritch blast, keeping his spear trained on the ladder in case something takes exception to his knock.

Once the others are done with their investigations from above, Gerrard smiles at Kei and says, “Thank you, Master Kei, for the illumination.” With rapier drawn, the young noble quickly slides down the ladder, turning around and landing in a crouch to address any threat close at hand.
Peri fires a beam of purple force down the stairs, squashing spiders and shattering bones. Nothin else moves. As the dust settles, Gerrard glides down the stair rails and lands silently on his feet.
Judging from the stove along one wall of this room, this was once the galley. Now the area is cluttered with bones and debris. Badly damaged metal knives and other cookware hang from hooks in the ceiling, while the choking stench of rotting flesh fills the air. Tiny spiders crawl over everything.
A door leads forward, and a mold-covered trapdoor is set into the floor.
