I am brand new to Edition 5 and am DM'ing for a group of friends--many of us who used to play DND back in the 80's (we are late 30's and 40's now). I would love to be a part of an adventure while I'm refreshing myself and DM'ing this group, but I don't have time to physically meet up with another group.
This format is new to me and sounds like something that I would really enjoy and like participating in. If I understand right, it sounds like I might need to take some time every day to respond to a post and participate--and the action will move slowly so as not to skip over important rules. I think this would be really helpful and enjoyable for me, but I have not done this before. I am very interested to experience a game from the "player side", because I've only jumped into being the DM and have not experienced being a player yet.
But I am new and not familiar with "play by post"--so it may be a frustrating endeavor for someone who is expecting me to know exactly what I'm doing. I'd love to be a part of this if I can, or if you have direction for me to find something that would help, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!
What’s the source of your character’s race? I’d like to limit race and class to the PHB for this campaign. Do you think there might be a PHB race that would suit your character?
Also, it would be helpful if you limited your character to one each of bond, flaw, and ideal. It’s kind of important to the way I’m going to run the campaign and would help me know where you want the focus to be.
I was kinda imagining him as a desert nomad who spoke to ghosts, found that the Kalashtar best fitted that. Based off their description, they look and act just like humans, save for their connections to said ghosts. Also, limiting works fine, do these work better:
Characteristics: Discusses things out loud with his quori spirit.

Bond: Though I had no choice, I lament having to leave my loved one(s) behind.
Flaw: I pretend not to understand the local language in order to avoid interactions I would rather not have.
I’m not seeing anything mechanical about the race that particularly reinforces the idea of speaking to ghosts, except maybe proficiency with Quori. Is there some reason you couldn’t make this character with the PHB human or variant human? I’m not trying to make this un-fun for you, but I feel like this race’s strong connection to Eberron makes it not a great fit for the campaign.
These personal characteristics look fine. You should have at least two personality traits.
I am interested in this style of game. I'm also interested in trying to play a completely randomly generated character (rolls for everything, from gender to flaws and the like). Edit: with stats that bad, I'll probably end up playing a rogue or a moon druid if I do this, so randomly generated within survivable parameters XD
Well let's have some questions for the DM first:
Edit: Does limited to PHB include the spell list and background choices as well, or can we use, say, spell choices that are included in D&D Beyond but not from the PHB (such as "create bonfire" or "shape water" from XGtE)?
What exactly is this "generic" world is Hartwaite set in? Does magic, racial relations, and society work in much the same way it does in Faerun? Is it a low-magic or high-magic world, basically - are the people there worrying daily about disease, serfdom, literacy, and the like, with only the upper crust adventurers having the access to magic, equipment, and education, or a more classic, comfortable, and broadly educated D&D world a-la Faerun? Is the majority of the population in Hartwaite human, other, or is it mixed? How about the role of women in your world, classic medieval or modern D&D?
I'm going to put out a brief description of me as a player using the Same Page Tool:
Good play isn't a win/lose kind of thing. I expect PCs to work together; conflicts for them are mostly for show. The GM's role is to prep a set of events - linear or branching; players run their characters through these events. The GM gives hints to provide direction. The players' roles are to set goals for their characters, and pursue them proactively. The smartest thing for my character's survival is sometimes not as important as other choices *(caveat: but with a wisdom/intelligence high enough, it will be their no. 1 choice most of the time). The GM's role to the rules is ignore them when they conflict with what would be good for the story. After many sessions of play, if a player decides to have their character side with an enemy, this is only going to last until the other PCs find out and do something about it. A fistfight breaks out in a bar! The details of where everything is - tables, chairs, where everyone is standing - is something that the GM will describe and you should ask questions to get more information. In order to really have fun with this game, the rulebook is something that ... everyone should at least know the basics of.The game runs best when the players take time to create characters that are... - built to face challenges using mechanics and stats - written with extensive backstories or histories - given strong motivations and an immediate problem or crisis - tied to other characters as allies
If you're interested in having me as a player, then have an ability roll set: Ability scores: 169116137
Edit: Also, will there be content sharing? If not, if players don't won the content, are we allowing "homebrewed" standard PHB content if it's not available on the SRD?
I wanted to respond to this because I think you ask some good questions.
First, “PHB only” is mostly about race and class. Backgrounds are customizable, but if you have a non PHB background feature, run it by me so I know what I’m getting in to and so we can discuss it if necessary.
As for spells, I’d like to limit initial choices to the PHB lists. Maybe later in the campaign nonPHB options will become available.
By “generic medieval fantasy”, I mean what you might expect from typical D&D. Maybe think Greyhawk rather than the Forgotten Realms. Populations are predominantly human and magic should be considered uncommon. It’s basically our world with D&D stuff thrown in. Poverty, illiteracy, and oppression of women are all things that very likely exist in this world, but don’t need to be the focus of play unless you want to make them so.
Harthwaite itself is a human village, and I’d say the women there enjoy a normal level of equality, but it isn’t something I’d focus on unless it was important to your character.
Some of the things you posted about your preferences make me think we might not be the greatest fit, but there aren’t any deal breakers
I don’t have any content to share. However someone gets PHB content onto their character sheet is fine by me.
Now, I hate to do this, but for consistency, it’s only fair. I’m actually beginning to think it was a bad idea to limit race to the PHB since everyone seems to want to play something else. However, Genasi isn’t in the PHB. If you’re going for a fire theme, might I suggest Tiefling?
I really don’t like asking folks to change their characters. 😕
Sounds like my type of game, but what exactly am I exploring for? Did something like mysterious ruins pop up over night? Did a messenger relay possibilities of treasure? Are we being sent out by a stereotypical adventurer guild?
It could be any of these or none of the above. You don’t even need to be exploring for anything. It’s entirely up to you what motivates your character to leave the village. You don’t even need to tell me, although I think it might be interesting for myself and the other players to know. I’m asking for you to have a reason for leaving because the focus of the game will be on traveling out into the surrounding wilderness rather than staying in the village, if that makes sense.
I have no context of the world. I can't make up a reason for leaving if I don't have any information whatsoever. Basically you gave me a blank slate, but don't realize that I'm not the gm. With this kind of response I could say that a bronze dragon swooped down and tailwhipped the village. That's why I'm asking, what is the reason for us leaving the village.
I mean a reason that’s personal to your character, like a desire or a commitment. I’m relying on genre convention to guide such choices. You can count on the village to be a typical peaceful village in a medieval fantasy with nothing much going on. You can count on the surrounding forest to be what we’ve come to expect of forests in D&D. The reason is that the theme of the campaign I have asked the players to buy into is overland travel and wilderness exploration. The village, in that context, is a home base. The “adventure” is anywhere but there. You could have your character live out the rest of his/her days there and probably nothing too exciting will ever happen, but I’m not recruiting for people to play NPCs. This adventure, at least initially, is about leaving this village. I don’t know how I can make that more clear. Your character has to want to go on that adventure. I’m not going to provide the motivation. That has to come from you, the player. Asking for you to do that isn’t an invitation for you to call down a bronze dragon. That’s where genre convention comes in. I think we all know that isn’t the kind of game we want to play. The question is, do you want to play the type of game I’ve described. It’s okay if the answer is no.

Thanks for everyone’s responses!
Here’s the tentative group list: RasecAlugard, Billtacular, sixtaverns, and DiggerDulcimerBardOfTheLowSwamp.
If you’re one of those people and you’re still on board, please follow the link below and post your character in the campaign.

Once everyone’s character is up, I’ll start a campaign thread and we’ll get things underway.
I'll be making the character and joining soon!

Ok great, i'll post my character soon.

Just read the second page, I think I might be a little too late.

*Shrugs* I'm fine with going V. Human, could I keep the "talks to spirits" thing though? XD That was the main thing that drew me to the race.
Added a second characteristic

Ahh pants. Am I too late? :) If so perhaps switch off the recruiting tag?
This sounds like just my sort of campaign! Never mind if it is too late, but if there is a space...?

Yes, of course, you can talk to spirits all you want! :)
Awesome!

Yes I'm so sorry! For a character is a hill Dwarf ranger okay?
Sounds perfect!
I'm gonna roll stats real quick

O.O let me try that again?
I'm trying to use my phone and doing the code manually 😂
