Well he could certainly guess that it’s from the geothermal activity of the mine. He wouldn’t be able to know for sure without further investigation. Something about the Halfling woman’s reactions makes it seem like it isn’t quite a normal thing.
Lady catches herself on the bartop and steadies herself. "My now," she says with a hand to her bossom. "That was quite the quake. I was going to say let's take her up on the offer to stay and play here but is it safe? Do the mines extend under this tavern and we must take care lest we fall into a sinkhole?" She gives a mock face of surprise and then relaxes. "I jest of course, I'll play but seriously one lass to another, whats the deal with the shaking?"
”Aggh, urgh.... Inhate it when that happens.” She shakes off the anger and nervousness. Taking a quick sigh and a quick puff to blow her bangs out of her face. “ Mine don’t go this here direction, no sinkhole to worry about. This has only started recently..... ‘bout ten day or so?” She looks at Lady and then the rest of the group one by one. “You all look so.... formidable, what’s your business in town again?”
“We’re actually a group that just formed recently, feels like today! We take odd jobs that might be dangerous. I guess we’d be called mercenaries, but we can do more than fight! We handle whatever you need without fail. Are you asking because you have something we could do for you?”
Shadow looks curiously at the woman, waiting for a response to his quick tale about the group. Hoping that if they could do something for her, she might have some information about the Crimson Pride, or at least a little extra gold for the road.
“Well that’s good” she says with an approving nod. “I don’t have any needs right now, but there’s a job board that usually has some postings. Heard the Crimson Pride has been spotted in this area, you know what that means...”
Lady perks up, "I've actually only heard of them just recently. Heard they were a elite group and some crazy tales but are they believable? And I'm sorry I don't know what their presence means here? Should... should I be scared? Should we pack up and leave?"
The tavern keeper chuckles a bit “no... no you should be safe here. They have a bad reputation..... their probably wanted on that job board I just mentioned. I’ve heard every tale of every scoundrel through this place. Trouble seems to follow wherever they go, but they sound like professionals. Don’t bother them and they won’t bother you. Please keep spending your money here. Who knows which stories are true and which ain’t.”
The changing of metal from a the smith rings out in the town has he’s apparently begun working on something. Walking a few buildings down to what looks to be some version of a town square. A job board with a couple of flyers posted to it. You find:

Flyer six:
Needed: Escort to Solitude - protection of shipping. Paid per day, bonuses given for hazards. Report to Tullus Granjya.
Hearing what he assumes his name is the Dragonborn works it over in his head. “Drys huh? Not a bad name considering. By the way, can you change into anything other than a human? (Looking at Silas) Could really help us out in terms of group makeup.”
Considering the other posters, and hearing about the Prince’s crimes, not to mention their own, he decides to ignore that in favor of the others as nothing on it helps them to figure out why they’ve forgotten everything.
“So if we take some jobs, we can either find some stuff that’s missing, obtain black powder, somehow, or just head off on guard duty to Solitude. Any thoughts on locating the tools?”
"Lady points at the paper. What's this bit about arson of a church or orphanage? Does the writer not know. How do you not know id the building is a church or an orphanage? Its like someone is just grabbing rumors and writing them down." She drops her voice to a lower tone mocking a male "'Hey you hear about them Crimson Pride folk? I hear two towns over they burned a church, or was it an orphanage? I don't know just write it down.'" Goes back to regular voice, "I mean come on."
He nods, "Yes, I believe I can, but it should be similar to my current form. I can work on that this evening." He pauses and thinks over the options they could take and says in a quieted tone, "I would assume the majority of the miners come here after their shifts to wind down. But with tools as nice as that I don't see them working with them in front of people. If they have been taken, I'm sure that someone would be keeping them tucked away so as not to be found out."
He pauses again searching his brain for a solution "I may be able to detect it if I had some experience with the items personally, but I would need to get a good nights rest first. What if we went and inquired about them, maybe the person who lost them has a picture or something of them?"
(Lol, it’s more of a take on the legal verbiage of laws. Arson is one thing, but arson of a church or orphanage is considered especially heinous . So a law is written to be arson of church/orphanage as they hold the same penalty. They wrote down the law broken not the specific act. - but I really do love the take on it.)
The ground begins to quake once more under your feet. But this time it builds and builds as people start to fall over, glasses begin to break as they smash on the floor, it feels like the ground is slipping beneath you. Until it stops.
What sounds like a tremendous eruption comes from outside. Then it sounds like hard rain, but you realize it’s stone and dirt pelting the roof of the tavern. A rock the size of a cow crashes through the roof and slams down into the floor sending wood shards and stone shards flying all over as the group dives out of the way!
Driver scans the perimeter. Just beyond the steam pools a large thick leathered skin lizard or dragon like creature has erupted through the ground. Standing taller than the buildings of the town. It is thrashing about whipping it’s claws and tail at innocent civilians and minors. It shakes the walls with a bellowing guttural roar that ends with a hiss. It’s eyes scarred over and purple tongue flickers out passed its horned nose.
Would Driver know (or guess) if the earthquake is related to the steam and the hot earth?

“A gold plated shovel strikes me as unusual.” Driver comments in a non-committal manner.
