"Your parents were dismissed last night," the rakshasa says in a formal tone.
Dog can cast protection from good and evil but will be noticed if he does.
The rakshasa turns to Kulloda. "I answer the door for my own purposes. You are the slave, not I."
To Tristan, he says, "My kinsman was killed after committing that attack, yes. May I ask the purpose of your visit? I would rather Master Finnegan continue his work that entertain visitors."
"Sure. Own purpose to do what master tell you and answer door," Kulloda says with a laugh. "Not think need gnome to entertain us. Need him answer questions."
Martin interprets the rakshasa's words to mean that Finnegan is willingly working towards the same ends as the rakshasa or his master and not that he is imprisoned within his own tower.
To Kulloda, the creature says, "Ah, but the difference is that I answer the door because I choose to, not because anyone commanded or asked me to. Perhaps you can submit your questions via writing and I will pass them on. Or I may be able to answer your questions on his behalf."
It is clear that the rakshasa is serving as interference for Finnegan to work unperturbed.
Kulloda opens his mouth to speak again but closes it. He's not really sure why they're here. A cage maybe? Instead he looks over at the others looking for a clue as to whether it's head smashing time. He'd love to tangle with a rakshasa.
“No offense, but you are not who we are here to talk with, although I am sure our conversations would be interesting” Tristan replies.
“We are here to discuss his ascension, surely not the type of discussion to commit to paper. Some of us have aided him before and we may have some leads that will assist him in garnering votes. Surely you would not keep that information from him?”
Persuasion to gain entry to the tower 26.
Deception to hide the true purpose of their visit 29.
The rakshasa opens his mouth, leaving it open for a beat in clear thought. Eventually he says, "Wait here."
He closes the door, leaving the party standing at the base of the tower for a minute. Then a another minute passes. In the third minute, the door opens. Finnegan stands there looking up at everyone. He is rubbing his hands on a filthy rag. Seeing the party standing there, he is not surprised, but he does screw his face into a look of consternation.
"Okay, make this worth my while," he says. "I'm obviously busy. Godhood won't attain itself."
Kulloda watches Finnegan for a moment as he wipes his hands on the dirty rag. He's sorely tempted to just take a swing with his axe and try to decapitate the gnome. Happens all the time in the tales of the gods. Makes things simple.
But maybe his new companions are rubbing off on him and he keeps his meaty hand off his weapon and waits for one of the others to answer Finnegan.
While they are waiting for Finnegan, Dog messages everyone in the group, relaying that if they have any tricks up their sleeve, to try them -- leaving or taking an object to scry later, familiarizing themselves with the place for future arcane snooping, changing into an animal to peer in other entrances, or even trying to sneak in invisibly when the door is open and Finnegan is busy grumping at Dog.
Dog looks around the tower, then down at Finnegan with a respectful face. "Lots of personnel changes around here. I'm just here confirming what your new associate said, that my parents were actually released, and I'd like to know in what manner, if they have any possessions remaining here. If so, I can retrieve them. It looks like you are busy. Those plans looked complex."He kneels down to get at eye level with the gnome so he doesn't have to crane up to talk to the goliath. "Now, we helped you get them from Kalazath's tomb. I'll try to stop bothering you if you let me know more about what you're doing with them. I askedyou at the party, and you didn't tell me. You're on your way to your own ascension. That doesn't require caging anything divine, unless you're worried about competition. The mean old dragon's not divine yet, so it can't be her. Maybe one of the gods or goddesses who's opposed to you. Illuminate me and maybe you win more allies, or at the very least, allow us not to bother you."
Kulloda raises an eyebrow when he hears Dog's message in his head. He's not much for magic and being invisible, but he can just try walking on in and causing a commotion if he's stopped, which would provide a distraction for anyone else.
Kulloda steps away from Dog and the others and leans against the wall of the tower.
If Finnegan steps even a little way out of the tower doorway, Kulloda will try quietly slipping past and inside.

While Dog is engaged in his long-winded questioning of Finnegan, Kulloda is able to step behind him into the tower. The ground floor has little in it, being just the foyer to the rest of the tower. Kulloda does hear footsteps above him, however.
To Dog, Finnegan says, "Possessions? Did they actually own anything? I wouldn't know. If you want to ask them, they are staying at an inn around here someplace. The...uh...Trumpeter or something like that."
"Those plans were rightfully mine," Finnegan says to the goliath, now at eye level. Kulloda takes this opportunity to slip inside. "I am surprised you were able to...divine...its purpose. There is only one former god on the mortal plane the device was designed for. The gods cast them out but could not revoke their divine power. I aim to transfer that power to the future god of ambition!"
The little gnome gets manic as he expounds on the purpose of the plans. Dog half expects him to cackle with glee, though he calms himself, straightening his rumpled robes.
"In a ten-day or perhaps less, I will no longer fall short of being ready for divine ascendancy," he says. "But not if you continue to pester me. Send a messenger over to collect any things if my former servants have left anything behind."
“Now, Let’s not be hasty”Tristan interjects to Finnegan “The doorstep is not the best place to discuss godhood. You may be ready for ascendancy, but there is still a matter of votes. Perhaps we should go inside where we can discuss how we can be of assistance.”
Kulloda looks around the ground floor and gives a soft grunt to himself. He wasn't sure what he expected, but a plain entry way seemed a little disappointing. Nothing to 'accidentally' sit on and break. Maybe upstairs.
He looks around for a doorway or staircase, heading up if he finds it.

Finnegan nods slowly, looking from Tristan to Dog and back. "Very well," he says. "We can retire to the parlor on the third floor. I don't use it much."

There is a staircase leading up and a wardrobe, closed at the moment, probably for coats.
Oblivious to what's happening outside and with no interest in a wardrobe, Kulloda lightly steps up the stairs. The quiet of his tread making him appear like a giant cat stalking its prey.

Is there an implication that Finnegan may not be free to make his choices right now?

Pausing the conversation at the end here, so Kulloda or anyone else can act before the conversation is officially over.
