"If he's killed a dragon turtle, I'll just have to find myself a leviathan to wrestle with. I'm not going to let my baby brother get the better of me!", he says with a grin. "You are right, I've been a fool to worry. All of you surprised me these few days."
Oden takes his leave and tries to find the others, going towards Bryn's shop.
In full tourist mode, he will call out loudly and obnoxiously to passing local: Ho, friend! We are visiting your fine town today. Tell us, what is there to see and do here?
Hidden dice roll:
6
The local you call out to at first looks startled, then overjoyed that you have called out to them and responds in a similar slightly-too-loud and extremely friendly manner "Hello there friend, welcome to our town! It is a pleasure to meet you. We have lots to see and do in Brokenbank, depending on your interests. I highly recommend trying some of our local delicacies, the caramel at that store is the best in town. [He points at the one your nose led you to already.] The mussels are great at that vendor [he points out one place], though if you can afford the coin and can get a seat at Moules Marinières, it will be a meal that is so good that you won’t forget it for a long time. The crepes are very good no matter where you get them. You look like you are an adventuring type, so if you are looking at doing shopping, I’d recommend checking out The Prawn’s Pawn first. Ask for Bryn and tell her Halmna sent you and she will look after you. If you are wanting to check out the sights, I recommend making your way to the top of the hill to the outer fortress, check any weapons you have with the guards, climb a few hundred steps around the outside of the building and then take a walk along the ramparts. The views are unparalleled. Don’t mind the grumpy looking Zhelezo soldiers every five meters, they are used to tourists and their attitude is mostly for show. If you are interested in art and literature, the library is worth checking out. It is small, but they have packed a lot in. It is pricy, but under supervision you can view some truly outstanding works there. There are a few shrines in the residential quarter as well, but they aren’t really for tourists... ummm... that’s all I can think of for the moment. Do you have any questions? "
[You were lucky with the roll and caught someone who just really wanted to have a chat.]
Luckily, or perhaps unluckily for this person, Kenton is in the mood to talk, and he comments and chatters merrily for a good hour if Reguh lets him. Not shopping today, my friend, just seeing the sights. Now I would be interested in seeing the ramparts, but I don't fancy surrendering my weapon. It's one thing to do that when entering the house of a trusted friend and knowing that his guards are on duty, quite another to do so in a new town on my first day here. No, I think I shall keep my blade and spear, just in case. Did you know there are sahuagin fiends that are attacking shipping and villages and goodness knows how and when their threat will finally be ended. My friends and I have played some small part in fighting back - here, let me tell you the tale. And he does. At great length, and with some enhancements. In this version of the tale, Kenton is not knocked unconscious twice during the fight for example.
After the conversation is over, Kenton will suggest to Reguh that they check out the library, as he suspects his new friend will find that more interesting than shrines or ramparts.
Fortunately (or possibly unfortunately) for Kenton, Halmna is also in the mood to talk and offers to walk Kenton and Reguh to the library.
He leads you both very slowly up the main road, listening to the details of the Selachai fight intently, interrupting only to point out things of interest along the way "shark-humans? That sounds terrifying. Oh, just quickly - that guesthouse is the oldest building in town. It is a bit run down and not worth the price, though is fine when everything else is booked out. That shop, Kord’s Blessings and Sailor’s Luck, is mostly full of superstitious knickknacks and tourist junk, but the shop owner is a real priest of Kord. If you are a religious type or need some healing, it can be worth checking out. Anyway, you were saying that these Shark-humans were climbing up the side of your ship, what happened next?"
Oden and Beatrice catch up with Halmna, Kenton and Reguh just as they reach the Prawn’s Pawn. You all hear a call from behind you "Oi, you are back! That was quick. Fantastic, Bryn will definitely want to speak."
You see Piotremerge from Bryn’s Import and Export Bazaar, their other business [or some of you may suspect from conversations that it is one of multiple businesses they are involved in].
Piotr has Ness in a sling on his front and as she sees Beatrice, she starts getting very excited and holds her arms out and starts bouncing up and down. Piotr adds "All morning Ness has been fussing and grumpy, then you show up and she is like a different child, anyway - are you all coming in to the Prawn’s Pawn, or should I get Bryn to come out?"
“No shopping for me either, but the library does seem like it could be useful right now. Perhaps I can see if there is precedent for the behavior of these sahaguin.”
Kenton pauses politely, as the rest of the party seems to know these people, but he will head off with Halmna and Reguh to the library if Reguh is willing.
"Okay, this might take a bit. I think I have told you, everyone I have killed, their spirits, their voices, they follow me. There are... a lot up there. I grew up working for... a group of powerful people in the empire, they raised me to be an assassin. Me and my only friend growing up, Silvia. I have done as they asked up until recently, believing that they truly wanted the best for people. Those I was sent after, they weren't good people. As a mage, I was able to be sent after dangerous people who wanted to harm the empire. It was all for the greater good. Recently Silvia's voice has been in my head. Since the battle on the ship. Last night... well... she was killed by our handler. She also showed me some of my past, my memories. I think they were changed. I'm still trying to figure out what all of this means. I know that the work I did, while not good, was for the greater good. I know that many of my actions helped others... but now I don't know what was real." She lifts up her scarf up and under it there are a series of strange dark runic markings. "Either the group I worked for, or the Kyrn gave this to me. That answer your questions about me?" She sits down holding her scarf tightly.
The Champion listens intently to every word as Aliez tells him about herself, and walks along for several minutes before speaking. “Truly, it raises more questions... but it answers one. I was prepared to end your life. You murdered without mercy, and are prepared to continue doing so. I don’t think I should. You don’t require pruning, you require... clarity. Atonement. Justice. A restoration of life - and death - to its natural order.”
”Please... continue traveling with us. If you desire the things I’ve said, I’ll help you get them with every breath in my body. And if it turns out your soul is a mutilated act of willful hate, well... I’ll help you to your final breath.”
"I've never killed simply for profit or out of ill intent. I have been trying to protect the empire from what I thought was a terrible threat. The memories I now question were the Kryn drow torturing and killing me and my friends. Silvia says she was trying to atone when they killed her. I don't know if they will just cast me off like they did her. These are some of the most powerful people in the world. I dare not say who I work for, they may hear my doubt and have me silenced."
[I am letting the Aliez and The Champion conversation continue before moving things forward at the Prawn's Pawn. Piotr will let Beatrice carry Ness if she is walking in with him.]
Halmna overhears Reguh's comment and interjects "The library has a number of wonderful books, ranging from beautiful poetry through to illustrated tales of legendary-though-usually-made-up battles, with the occasional novella and novel on the shelves. They stock primarily fictional works, and whilst they do have some non-fictional biographies, it is less a place to research and more a place to find inspiration in the written word surrounded by art that has been collated from around Exandria" he offers as somewhat of an apology "Many of the works are hard to find in Wildemount."
"Yeah I was trying to follow orders, and she was a murdering pirate who had threatened all of us. I won't apologize for trying to rid the world of someone evil who hurts innocent people."
Kenton's ears definitely perk up at the mention of illustrated battles. That is good to hear, Halmna. I think our friends wish to introduce us to someone, so perhaps we will pause here for a while. You are welcome to wait if you wish to accompany us to the library, but I would hate to take so much of your time. Tell me, what are you up to today? Have we interrupted your labours?
"Yeah I was trying to follow orders, and she was a murdering pirate who had threatened all of us. I won't apologize for trying to rid the world of someone evil who hurts innocent people."
”You also lost an ally in doing so. I understand ending the lives of wicked people. But it’s not good to forget your allies. If you remember your enemies so well, and forget your allies, you will surely be alone, blind to the lies we all tell ourselves about righteous, just acts.”
”This isn’t something that can be figured out by you and me in an afternoon, but I hope you think on it, and I will think on how I can help you with the spirits who haunt you.”

Halmna responds "It seems your friends are friends with my friends. I guess that makes us all friends as well, so please do introduce me. I have already visited Bryn a couple of times this morning but I'm sure she wont mind another visit, so I'll join you and then take you to the library afterwards. All I was doing for the day was waiting, so I welcome the distraction." He seems like he is going to expand on this, but stops himself and instead calls out "Piotr! Hello again, have you met my friends..." [he turns to Kenton and Reguh] "apologies, what were your names again?"

[where is Beatrice? Did she tag along with Oden, or someone else?]
[Beatrice tagged along with Oden, she's just been quietly taking in the sights for the most part]

"Hello, Piotr! We'll come in, as soon as everyone is ready. We're missing two."
Oden looks around for Aliez and The Champion. Perception: 11
Beatrice holds her arms out for little Ness, and will happily carry her when they follow Piotr.
(Definitely willing, any type of check we need to find the library and then for research)
