Alkyn wakes up with a start, adrenaline pumping, and immediately attempts to blend with the shadows, while trying to get a sense of who and what approaches. Was that a damned dragon??!?!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Six jerks awake, calling out to Avandra on instinct, his hand tightening around the sword he'd had leaning against him as he slept. He hisses, ears flattening against his head as he pushes himself up.
"What in the Change Bringer's name is happening," he mutters, mostly to himself, looking around to see what he can see.
Sinsil says in a whisper "The roar was me. I tried to buy us some time." She draws her rod down across her body like a TSA agent with a metal detector casting mage armor on herself
I think there may be some miscommunication here- when I said you can see gnolls in the distance, I meant about half a mile. You can see a long way from the hilltop. If that would change your actions then feel free to retcon.
As your companions awake, you can begin to make out the full scale of the gnoll pack. There look to be at least 20 of them, plus hyenas trailing them at a short distance. They appear to be turning toward the copse of trees where the pool stands below you. Several of them are scouting ahead of the main force, zigzagging back and forth with their muzzles low, as if scenting for something.
Six stares down at the gnolls, his tail lashing behind him. "I suggest we take the opportunity to get out of here," he says, though he makes no move to sheath his sword. "I do not think we wish to take on the whole pack and surely if they get any closer, the horses will bolt."
Alkyn remains hiding in darkness, his voice low when he speaks. "Moving is appealing, but outrunning a hyena may be beyond us or the tired horses."
"A defensible position be best." he says.
(( This was described as backed by a cliff and surrounded by ( impenetrable(?) ) thorns....is that right, or are we just back to the wall, in the open, visible for miles...? ;-) ))
Sinsil creates a silent image of a black dragon taking flight and soaring straight up sixty feet above the cliff with its wings completely unfurled and hovering.
The Gnolls seem to be heading in roughly the same direction you are- towards the nearest settlement, Talonstadt. You know that they can be relentless in pursuit, and more than capable of running down their prey, but over short distances they can easily be outdistanced by fast horses. The real question is if the horses' strength can hold out until you reach civilisation. As for defending your position- it would be fine against wandering monsters, but probably not against a large number of foes. Especially if they decide to wait you out.
As Sinsil lets loose her illusion, a black dragon erupts from the hilltop and begins to circle 60 feet above you. The Gnolls begin to scatter for cover, whining in fear. It looks like your best chance to gain some ground.
Alkyn readies his horse and himself as quickly as he can, and when the everyone is ready, moves quickly down the path, taking a route to the road that skirts the oncoming gnolls' position.
Sinsil's dragon has bought you about 5-6 minutes head start. What I have in mind is a kind of skill challenge to see if you can evade the gnolls. Each member of the party can propose how they will use their skills to gain ground against the hunters, and then roll. On each success you will gain some ground, and on a failure the hunters will start to close in. Best of five to decide if you make good your escape!
Ashanti is up, " Hyena people.....oh, good...."
She nocked an arrow to her lonbow and tried to find a target.

Tristan looks worried "Hey guys....I think our friends from earlier were a scouting party, and e just stumbled across the main force"
In what direction are the Gnolls heading? Is it towards any cities?

Ashanti kept her bow trained on the foe, " How fast are they? Do they have more stamina than horses?"

"MOVE! NOW! WHAT YOU CAN'T CARRY WE CAN REPLACE IF WE MAKE IT TO TOWN!" Sinsil swings to her backpack and moves to hop on her horse.
Ashanti nodded and dashed to the horses.
"Try not to wake the dead. The living are already having their morning coffee after that" Despite his sarcasm, he does mount his horse "Lets move"

Six doesn't bother with words, simply moving to mount his horse as quickly as he can, taking up the reins quickly.
