"You would be surprised; dwarves can be very quiet under the right circumstances." replies Krom "But no dwarf with respect for himself and his clan, even if lacking food or ale, will resort to stealing." says the dwarf in a serious tone as he starts eating his share of food.
"Anyway, if we do not find any other tracks or leads, it could be worth to check Kelvin's cairn and speak with those dwarves." says Krom to the rest of the group.
"Perhaps we may find more Duergars in Kelvin's Cairn?" Questions Kazri as she turns to the Cori, and drops two gp on her hand. "Would you have any meat that you could spare? We have some hungry sled dogs, and a uhmm... Very friendly owlbear outside that could use a good super as well."

Chill nearly spit out his soup laughing when Allie said that a quiet dwarf is an oxymoron. Though he did try and suppress his mirth when it appeared Krom was possibly insulted by the thought of dwarves stealing.
"I think the tracks and a visit to Kelvin's Cairn are in order. Can you show us where the tracks were? Perhaps some remain that we can follow."
Cori nods to Kazri. "Yeah, I've got food for your dogs and for your, wait what? Did you say an owlbear? You folks walk around with an owlbear? Ain't that a bit dangerous?"
Allie answers Rhogar's question about Kelvin's Cairn. "Barbarian legend says the god Tempus battled the frost giant Kelvin in the midst of Icewind Dale. Kelvin was killed and Tempus scooped stones from the plain and heaped them atop the fallen giant as a reminder of the penalty of his wrath. It's the mountain that dominates the landscape to the northwest. Dwarves have, for many long years, had a number of different settlements there digging and mining."
As Allie takes you to the back of the inn, Vellynne tells you that she plans to stay at the inn and will not be accompanying you. She does give you a reminder that you have more pressing things to do then track down lost lanterns.
At the back of the inn you find faint footprints lead toward Kelvin’s Cairn. They are a few days old and too worn to determine what type of creature may have made them.
"Interesting legend," says Krom as Allie finishes her tale. "It will not take us too much time, Vellynne." replies the dwarf as the follows the rest of the group outside. "Chill, what do you make of those tracks?"

"I can assure you that Oli will not bother anyone in town." Kazri goes to feed the sled dogs and Oli, then she the others at the back of the inn. She crouches close to the footprints, and takes a closer look. Oli comes from behind her and takes a good sniff as well.

"Mn. Interesting, and yet it is a legend the dwarves cared not to pay mind to considering the possibility of desecration." Rhogar snorts. "But then, from what little I remember, the relationship between dwarves and giants is not exactly one of kindness." He adds with a bit of mirth to his voice. Though the reminder from Vellynne sobers him up quickly, Krom's response in turn is accompanied by a small but approving nod from the dragonborn as the group followed after Allie.
Once outside and while others did their follow investigations with the tracks (hopeless by all appearance thought it might've been), Rhogar turns again to Allie and asks, "Anything else can you tell us about the dwarves of Kelvin? Have none recently come to town, or made mention in their visits of disturbances or similar thefts behind even the strange things going about in the dale these days?"

Chill grinned. This was what he loved to do. He spent some time studying what was left of the tracks. Though it was impossible to tell who or what made them, they did lead into the darkness.
Survival 29
"Well, there is certainly only one way to find out. We follow the tracks which lead to Kelvin's Cairn and see what we see!"
Eager to get going he waits for the last of the questions to be asked and answered. "A few miles at most, a couple hours of walking and we'll get to the bottom of this."
Chill looks at his own tattered map and then back in the direction the mountain would be. "I'm ready, let's go."
"You remember well, Rhogar. Giant-kin and dwarves have been enemies for a long time," replies Krom as Chill examines the tracks. "Lead the way, my friend, as I am too eager to find who is behind those thefts."
The dwarf pauses before adding, "And if the thief or thieves are indeed dwarves, I'm eager to put some sense back into their heads."
Allie answers Rhogar "Nope, nothing. That's why I thinks its them. But maybe I'm wrong. This darkness and cold is ruining everything. We are all in dire trouble if it continues much longer."
She then heads back inside and out of the cold as you follow the track into the darkness. The tracks leading away from the inn have been partly filled with blowing snow, making them appear as small depressions. Once you get about 50 feet away from the inn and its outbuildings you discover that the tracks have been completely obscured as the wind picks up.
"The tracks have run out. Do we continue to head in the direction of Kelvin's Cairn and see what we can find? Perhaps the tracks pick up again. Sometimes some areas of tracks will disappear and then you'll find them again. I say we keep going." Chill says after studying the ground.
"You are the expert Chill." replies the dwarf "If you say to continue, I'll follow." Krom points in the direction of Kelvin's Cairn "We do know where the people that left the tracks were going, we should be able to find them soon."

"Hmph. Well for what it's worth, you need not worry of a counter argument from me!"Rhogar chuckles. "But even enroute, let's be sure to keep those eyes peeled for more than just clues. For who knows, though I doubt this of course, but perhaps our thieves ran afoul of something in transit? And thus the problem has largely solved itself!" Gorrah chimes in with a soft cry of agreement and sends out warm feelings to the group at large as they made their way. Rhogar at the very least as well expends a charge of a certain wand to make use of for at least the first 10 minutes since the tracks disappeared.

You continue further into the snow and cold, moving further from the town. Rhogar checks to see if any magic was used to hide the tracks, or even if anything else might be present. However the landscape is devoid of anything of interest. This is certainly not the furthest you have traveled in the brutal artic landscape of Icewind Dale and the Savage North. Though the main tracks have disappeared, covered by blowing snow, Chill is still able to find an occasional track that lets you know you are headed in the right direction. A couple hours later as the mountain begins to loom above you you continue your search into the foothills around the base of Kelvin's Cairn. About an hour into your search you come across something of interest.
A blocky stronghold bereft of warmth or charm juts out of a hillside in a rough crescent shape. Only part of its construction is visible; the rest is buried in the stone.
A large double door of stone serves as the main entrance. The terrain leading to it is a gently upward-sloping plain covered with fresh snow. A stream used to flow out of a barred culvert northeast of the main entrance, but the waterway has frozen. Two other barred openings can be seen along the stronghold’s northern wall. Anyone positioned behind these openings would have an unobstructed view of the hillside.
Closer to you, separated from the rest of the stronghold, is a snow-covered stone bunker perforated by arrow slits.
"You would be surprised; dwarves can be very quiet under the right circumstances." replies Krom "But no dwarf with respect for himself and his clan, even if lacking food or ale, will resort to stealing." says the dwarf in a serious tone as he starts eating his share of food.
