Dadeveth stands back as the others speak with this strange woman. She glances to the tower often, but stays back from it as well, not wishing to get zapped by the door. "So you have not seen our person, and I, at least, do not know who this Rudolph Van Richten person is." Dadeveth eventually says to the woman. "Any idea why we would be sent here, if it were not ment for us to meet him here? Is there something special with this Van Richten person that would be of importance to us?" She decides to let the woman know a bit of what they are about. "We are suppose to help defeat this all-powerful vampire lord that rules these lands, and were hoping to meet our contact here to see what information he might have for us."
It is clear from the moment you take a closer look at the door that there are powerful magics at work.
You notice that each stick figure embossed on the door has differently positioned arms — either bent up or down at the elbow, or sticking straight out to the side.
Initially, you believe the stick-figure puzzle to be the only aspect of the door but you cannot shake the word Khazan from your thoughts. Could it have been the original architect of the tower, or at least the door? There are scuff marks around the lettering as though it has slid against another surface, this is not echoed throughout the door. You believe that there may well be an extra trap here, involving the carved word.
Dadeveth - Ezmerelda nods, "that is what I found confusing as well. I do not know this man - Rictavio. Yet he would lead you to this place. It is most confusing." She listens to you carefully. "It looks like our goals are aligned. I believe this Rictavio you speak of knew of Van Richten and led you to this tower. It was my thought that, if I could not find Van Richten himself, he may well have left a powerful relic for killing Strahd within this place... or, as you say, information that will help. We just need to get inside."
Pausing briefly, Ezmerelda continues, "I also have my suspicions. If Rictavio matches Van Richten's description... well then my search may well be over." A glimmer of hope enters her eyes.
Sandu- Ezmerelda smirks. "Well, I am used to gentlemen being a little forward,"she makes a mock-contemplative face, "but, I must admit, you catch me by surprise. Mr...?"
'Yeah, well, not-'Sandu became flustered. 'Not like that. What- what he said.' He pointed at Dormark.
He fell silent after his sputtered retort. The woman was certainly easy on the eyes. An exotic beauty as the men back home would say. Sandu had no idea what exotic really meant but figured it was something you would not see every day. Like the leg: that would also qualify as exotic, right?
Still reeling from his embarrissing outburst made Sandu listen to the conversation between Ezmerelda and the others in silence. He liked what he heard: the most powerful vampire hunter as a potential ally? He could get behind that notion.

'Oh, there's no doubt about that.'Sandu spoke up with a glimmer of recognition in his eyes. 'Madam Eva told us as much.'
He turned to Dormark. 'What was it again? She flipped a card: a wizard or something? And then she said,' Sandu tried to emulate Madam Eva's mystic tone of voice, 'This card tells of a powerful force for good and protection, a holy symbol of great hope.... Look for a wizard’s tower on a lake. Let the wizard’s name and servant guide you to that which you seek.'
'Is this Khazan fellow a wizard? This is a tower by a lake so that's two for three so I'd wager he is.' He stood next to Dallid, the blue skin colour was still a bit freaky to him, and examined the door. It had all the trappings of a puzzle and for a moment Sandu felt a childish giddiness at the prospect of solving it.
Galqarin points at the side of the tower. "Who needs door when there is big hole in wall and wooden ladders? I climb easily."
'Because you don't just go barging into someone's home, even if there is a hole in the wall. Especially not a wizard's home.' He knew from experience that most wizards were jealously possessive of their secrets and often spent twice as much time and effort securing said secrets as they did discovering them. Like that one time with, what was it, the third mentor he tried? Honestly, it was just a cupboard: he was young and had mixed up the cookie shelf and the potions shelf: there was no need to hex him with a donkey's tail for two weeks. A stern talking to would also have sufficed. Sandu grinned. In all honesty, a stern warning would have made him more determined. 'No climbing for now.'
He turned his attention back to the door. Dallid had pointed out that the stick figures had their arms bent in various angles. Sandu's eyes traced the line going from the top left figure, the one with its arms in the air, to the bottom one, back to the top and so forth until he had passed every figure. The figure was the same, only the arms moved. The arms move?
An idea struck Sandu. 'Move aside, Dallid.'He told the blue-skinned one. 'I'm going to perform the worst dance ever and I need the space.'
He stood before the door. He did not like that the figures were so small that he had to stand so close just to make them out but if the worst came to pass, Dormark could patch him up, right? Sandu swallowed down the lump in his throat and started with the figure in the top left corner.
'Arms up.'Sandu said while doing the motion to mimic the stick figure. He did so for every figure that followed. 'Left down and right up. Stretch. Both down. Both up. Left up and right down. Stretch. And both arms down.'
He held the last pose and stared at the floor in embarrassment. 'Someone please tell me that worked, else I'd like to throw myself into the lake now.'
Sandu - As you say the name Khazan, the carved lettering on the lintel, previously scuffed, glows with a dim blue light -KHAZAN. The red disk in the middle of the door revolves one-hundred and eighty degrees before settling into place with a heavy thud. The lettering remains, glowing brightly.
Ezmerelda, who up until this point had been standing in shocked silence by your string of revelations, pipes up. "Looks like this Madam Eva knows what she is talking about," she says in awe. "Let the Wizard's name guide you. Wait..."she frowns at you, "am I the servant?!"
Galqarin - Ezmerelda nods in agreement with Sandu. "Tried climbing in before. I wouldn't recommend it, these gargoyle statues became animated and attacked, just about managed to get out in time." She shrugs, "you could try to fight them but I'd only recommend that as a last resort."
Sandu - Looking at you curiously, Ezmerelda watches you waving your arms in the air. "And what do you sup..."her sentence is cut short when two runes light up on the front of the red disk (see spoiler). "Whether you are just incredibly lucky... or..." she looks perplexed, "what do the runes mean? Can anyone read them? No need to throw yourself into any lake... yet."
"Unless Van Richten is a Wizard, I think Van Richten is the servant and you are his disciple," ponders Dormark then he sees Snadu gesturing before the door.
"Careful Sandu, wizards have a bad habit of making their traps deadly against outsiders. I won't be able to save you if your turned to dust," warns Dormark.
As the runes appear Dormark takes a closer look to see if they are a language he understands.
(Dormark gots common, Dwarvish, Celestial, and Goblin as languages.)
Dormark - Ezmerelda nods sombrely at your suggestion of turning to dust. "Powerful magic is at work here. We must take caution," as she gives her warning the runes glow red before returning to their initial colours. This then happens every 10 seconds - flashing from their initial colours to red ever so briefly. "It's like it's asking us a question, perhaps we have to do something when the runes turn red?"
You are unsure what language the runes are written in.
ALL - Anyone seeking to understand the runes' significance can roll an Arcana check.
As you search your memory regarding magic runes you are pretty sure you can identify both of them; the top symbol is the arcane rune for "heat" and the bottom symbol means "cold".
It would seem that Ezmerelda's observations about the runes flashing are correct; whatever action(s) are required to bypass the magic will likely need to be made at the exact time the runes turn red. If the timing is out it is likely that the trap will be triggered.

'Ha! YES!'Sandu pulled both arms in into a double fist bump. 'Take that, Emmerett the Thrice-Burned! Not smart enough to understand magical coding, my tailless butt!'
He lowered his hands and composed himself with a cough. 'What I mean is: that's the first part solved?'
He addressed Ezmerelda: 'Going by Madam Eva's words, the wizard is Khazan. Unless you're both serving under Van Richten and Khazan simultaneously, I think we can rule you out.' Sandu tapped his chin. 'Was Van Richten a pupil of Khazan?'
Seeing Dallid examine the runes closer made Sandu lean in as well. The pulsing effect of the runes made him go into a surface lull and an inky blackness sprawled out from the centre of his eyes until they were completely dark. 'Dezvãlui' Sandu said with a heavy tongue.

Dallid gestures to each symbol. "Heat and cold runes. Timed with the changing spectrum, low frequency. Looks like we just need a... Well a mage would be easiest."
Sandu - "Never heard of Khazan. Well... except for the tower here!"Ezmerelda says, confused. "I don't think Van Richten was a pupil of Khazan but then I guess it depends on how you define pupil. If Khazan built this tower then that would have been years ago."
Your mind drifts, attempting to access all you can regarding magical runes. Unfortunately, you draw a blank. You know that the runes are magical but have no idea of their meaning.
Detect Magic
Powerful magic emanates from the door. You get the sense that both evocation and transmutation magic is at work here. You are certain that this door is still trapped and that any wrong move could trigger it.
Furthermore, every time the runes briefly turn red you get the sense that the magic temporarily fades.
Dallid - "A mage?" Ireena questions, "couldn't Sandu... I mean, I've seen him wield all types of powerful magic."
"If it's fire you need,"Ezmerelda says. She raises her hand into the air and shoots off a fire bolt. "Do you reckon that'll satisfy the heat rune? What about the other - cold?"
"I have both cold and hot." Dadeveth says as she clomps a bit closer to the door. "I can cast one of those if someone can do the other rune, just let me know which you want me to do..." She has: Prestidigitation for cold or, heat metal for heat.
Under normal circumstances Cerio'd have suggested picking the lock or sneaking through the gigantic hole in the wall, but he'd had enough experience with the esoteric to be wary of magical traps. Once he'd nearly lost a hand to a carnivorous book.
"Alright, ya'll try castin' spells at th' door. I'll be right here if'n ya need me." He crouches behind the wheel of Ezmerelda's wagon and plugs his ears with his fingers, peeping around toward the tower's door.
'Cerio's got the right idea.'Sandu said after witnessing the man duck and cover behind the wagon. Sandu wished he could crouch next to him. Unfortunately that was not going to happen.
He gave Ireena a small smile. 'Thanks for the vote of confidence but I'm afraid I'm not the fire and ice kind of mage.'He waved his hand in a similar manner as he would when casting. 'It's more like-'He recalled the heavy impacts his spells tend to have on enemies, 'pure magical force. For when you need to punch someone from far away.'He jabbed for extra emphasis. 'That and calling ravens.'
Sandu directed the attention back to the door. 'The door is coursing with evocation and transmutation magic. My guess is that the runes are the transmutation part so if we trigger them, they should change to open the door.'He paused for a moment. 'It's the evocation part that worries me. If we screw this up, the door, nay, the entire tower might just blow up in our face.'
He clapped his hands. 'With that said. Ezmerelda: you can provide the fire part. Dadeveth,' He addressed the centaur. 'I'm not entirely sure if a simple prestidigitation spell is going to be enough but I could assist with an additional casting of it of my own. Furthermore,'He pointed at the door, 'every time the runes light up, the other magic briefly fades. So we only have a brief window to pull this off. I...'Sandu rubbed the toe of his boots into the ground nervously. 'I just want everyone to understand the risk we're taking. You know: if anyone wants to opt out?'He concluded with a shrug.
Dormark looks at Sandu for a second then goes to stand close by him and says, "I'm not going to let you do this by yourself. Get ready in case it goes bad."
