Tandor the White, Human Life Cleric
Thomas strokes the thin beard adorning his pointed chin.
"Charming your way into the Hawk's Nest? Aye, that's doable, certainly. If ya kin stomach kowtowin' to the high society types. Been there m'self once." he states, and then clears his throat.
"Just make sure to speak like them. Ever so politely and clearly. It shows you are a person of integrity, or so they say." Thomas says, altering his speech and dropping his normally thick, somewhat bumpkinly accent. "I lost my temper with one spoiled brat who thought I was one of the types who just magically conjures up new toys, so I'm not allowed back. There aren't many people in the Hawk's Nest who are 'off-human'. They barely tolerate dwarves, and even elves are still uncommon... most of the Hawk's Nest is controlled by human aristocrats." Thomas explains, still in his more 'proper' voice.
Edna nods her agreement.
"Some of my patrols included passing through the Hawk's Nest. I could always feel eyes on me because while I look human enough, they could tell I WASN'T. No one ever bothered me, but they weren't exactly lining up to thank me for my service, either. As a member of the watch, they held no authority over me." Edna says, somewhat bitterly.
The two bid Aelar goodbye and thank him and Hyre for their work.
(That's 2 for artistry/crafting. Hyre and Aelar have earned 16 SP between them)
Geoffrey is his usual grumpy self when he opens the door and sees Hyre's familiar face
"Don't waste time, do you?." he grumbles.
"This keeps up, I'm going to have to bloody charge admission..." the one-armed knight muses idly. "You may bring anyone you want with you. If you had meant harm, you would have tried it already. I would just prefer to meet them myself first."
"Studying the arcane arts, are you? You have some surprises about you, boy. You didn't seem the type." he states, and gestures to the pair to come inside.
"Come along then." he states, leading the pair through his home towards the house's access to the basement. His home is filled with old relics of his time as a knight. It's not opulent, but it's comfortable enough and in fairly good repair. It seems despite his injury, he has found ways of maintaining the property himself, though it's clear that he's fallen behind on some things. He clearly needs help maintaining his home. The centerpiece of his living room is a fine oil portrait of himself as a much younger man, a strapping swordsman only a few years older than Hyre and Aelar themselves. By his side is someone dressed in the same religious habit as Sister Daar, a woman with kind, yet intense eyes, brandishing a shield with her faith's emblem. He walks past the kitchen to a narrow hallway with stairs headed down.
"Cellar's just through that door. If I'm busy, you can just let yourself in and head down there yourself." he says gruffly.
Grimbuld is pleased to see Kallista on time and ready to work.
"Well well, you have some surprises in you yet." he states, then tosses an apron and an odd-shaped mask at her.
"Put these on. You've got dirty work ahead of you today." he mutters.
"I don't trust you with the till yet, so I'll have you working in the back room. If you start feeling ill, come out here and take a breather. You'll be processing herbs. Come with me, I'll show you how." he states.
Grimbuld shows Kallista how to pull the herbs in question off their stems so they can be ground up into powder. It's fairly mindless work but the herbs smell terrible.
"This is stinkwort. It's probably the worst smelling thing I have in my entire store, but it's used to help restore wakefulness. City watch use it on late night patrols. One snort of this stuff will keep you awake for half a day, though your eyes will water for a good hour afterwards. It can even be used to wake someone up if they've been put to sleep magically. In humans, anyway. Not sure if it works on all species." he explains.
(Is Kallista going to push herself at work to try and please Grimbuld or is she going to save her energy for something else later?)
Carmine listens to Lazlo's story and her heart goes out to him.
"Oh my beautiful boy. To smile so brightly when you have such... awful luck in your past now..." she touches her forehead to his.
Carmine is all too eager to allow Lazlo to pull her to him, going in for a deep kiss but her eyes flick to one side.
"Oh, bother. I forgot where we are. We'd best behave while we're here." she whispers, but sneaks in a little squeeze to his butt.
"Decency police and whatnot. If we want to be a little more free, we need to move to the poorer side of town." she says, then grins wickedly. "At least, until we get behind closed doors. The maids in that manor are going to wonder what madness happened in our room."
When Lazlo asks about her past, she makes a face.
"It's a decidedly less interesting story than yours. My brothers and I arrived to Guiston initially on an apprenticeship when we were a few years younger than you. Our whole family are travelers, you see. What's the human word for us... gypsies, I think? We don't settle in one place, but our caravan was getting too big. Our parents figured we'd have a better life if we had a more permanent home, but our 'master' was an ******* who tried to teach us 'proper' music. All stogy, stiff waltzes and fancypants shit. Nothing with FEELING. So, when we were old enough, we just up and left and started performing on our own. The dances we do are part of our family's legacy. Music isn't JUST for sitting and being introspective while you listen politely. Music is an expression of everything that makes life worth living. Love, pleasure, losing your mind for one night , taking risks, DOING something with the life we've been given! I can't think of a bigger waste of time than just SITTING there while music is playing." Carmine says, becoming more animated the more she talks about her music.
"There used to be a great military tradition here in Guiston. When the knight's brigade would line up, pipers would sound the charge. They would play the music the knights would hear every day while training, letting them know what they're fighting for. It made them fearless. I originally wanted to learn the pipes, but the knight's brigade was disbanded years ago and the pipers' music isn't practiced anymore, not since Guiston became more interested in just guarding its borders than it was protecting its neighbors."

OOC: Nice! Did Aelar get a success on the STR check?

Kallista nods and puts on the apron and mask, ready to try her hardest to please Grimbuld.

"Of course. Thank you, sir. I won't disturb you too much in the future. At least until it hatches."
Hyre heads down to the cellar, eager to start as soon as possible. When he goes in, he lays the egg safely next to the pewter bird. Then, he'll try to look through the library to find a book that will interest him. First, he'll look for anything about the workings of magic. If he cannot find anything related, he'll look for anything that might hold information about the Skell. Lastly, if he cannot find either of the others, he'll look for the book with the information about the bullet hawk and will read it to try to learn whatever he can.
(In case an ability check in needed to find the books, 3, +1 if wisdom-based or +2 if intelligence-based.)

Aelar pockets his wages for the day's work, changes into his new clothes, and heads off to Sister Daar's mission to lend a hand there as promised. As he walks, he thinks over Thomas' words. Yes, he could do that. His mother and later his cousin had been teaching how to speak with proper diction and courtesy. It wouldn't be hard. Now I wonder if the library charges a fee. Sister Daar will know.
Once he gets to the mission, Aelar locates the Sister. "Hello, Sister. I'm here to help," he says with a broad smile. Checking the sun, he sees it still lacks a bit to two hours after noon. "I can give you a couple of hours before I head over to the dwarfs to do some reading. So, please, put me to work. Tomorrow, I'll try to charm my way into Hawk's Nest, to get to the library. Do you know if they charge a fee for entry or to borrow or for anything else?"

Lazlo listens to Carrie attentively as she talks about her life. He is charmed and delighted with how animated she gets describing music, and movement. He completely identifies with what she says. "You can say I have horrible luck but.. it brought me here and I can't complain." he smiles, enjoying the feeling of the morning sun on his face. "Whoever you were apprenticed to sounds like he could use a stiff drink or a good tumble in the sheets. Probably both? I'm with you...why do anything halfway? Anything worth doing should be embraced, experienced, enjoyed!" he says as they walk through the district. "And why would anyone care what we do while we're walking along?" He shivers, looking over his shoulder. "Joyless! Joyless looky lous who feel good dampening others spirits. I knew people like that in Hon- so dour and serious all the time... Have you ever talked to someone and the whole time in your head you're thinking 'This is SO boring! They're blind and deaf to the beauty all around them. Bleh!"
"About those pipers... they sound completely fascinating. I LOVE old stories of heroes and the skalds who tell their tales. Have you heard the tales of Eusabius the Fleetfooted? I've been focusing on tales and songs of love for the past twelve hours... " Lazlo nudges Carries arm "i dunno why" he laughs. "but before that I wanted to tell epic tales of heroism and adventure. I can't even imagine being able to rally and inspire people to fight for something! What kind of pipes did they play? Are there any pipers left? Where can I get one!? Why would Guiston just get rid of that tradition?"
After listening to Carries resonse to the above and reaching a part of town he recognizes, he says " I wish I could stay here with you all day- but I should check on my friends at the farm. They get into ridiculous amounts of trouble without me... But where can I find you? I mean... can I see you again? Have you been to the Pitch? I bet we can go swimming there!"

Leon heads to Duncan's smithy and greets his half-dwarf employer. He readies himself for a day of hard work in the heat of the forges.

((You did indeed Aelar! You just have to roll equal to or higher than your strength (As the stronger you get, the harder it is to GET stronger.)That's 1 more success there. Hold on, I'm just editing this post, will have a complete recap of your efforts in just a bit. Sorry for the delay. It's very icy where I am and I fell quite badly while walking our dog the other day. I have a severe spinal condition so any falls mess me up pretty badly. It's hard to be creative when you're locked up in agony.
Also yes Leon, roll for your strength and I'm all for just rolling for custom skills like blacksmithing that aren't in the base player handbook, as they're pretty self-explanatory ))

Just as a clarification of how to roll your skill checks, if you don't yet have proficiency in a skill, you don't get to utilize your stat bonuses when you roll. (I'm not going to retroactively take away successes for rolls made with stat bonuses because I didn't clarify that well enough) it's just a flat DC of 13 for practicing a skill. If you get a proficiency, then you get to apply your stat bonuses and that skill just becomes an extra usable skill when you hit level 1.
The point of the prologue is to build on your strengths, reduce your weaknesses and gain a few skills that you may not have for your class. The prologue will end with a time skip, so we're NOT going to be playing this out until your characters are actually 18, obviously, and you do NOT need to choose your class by the end of the prologue.
You can save your choice until the time skip to select from the classes you have built up enough points for, and, if you don't have the prerequisite stats to take the class, the stats that are lacking will be raised to the prerequisite because it's assumed that your character will have had over a year's worth of training to get them there.

(Hmm... I have no idea about the gains, I'm just wondering how Hyre managed to lose 5 monk points? Not that I'm expecting Hyre to become a monk but it still makes me wonder...)
