I’m trying to make a build similar to D.Va from overwatch- big tanky mech, but the ability to jump out and act independently and either call it back or return to it.
i could easily go pure steel defender artificer and play a small character and ride around in it, but... I heavily favor dps or burst damage and am not a big fan of the artificer’s support style.
so I’m looking for other suggestions - reflavor any mounted combatant? Use a rune knight to become large? Creation bard? Find a way to up the artificer’s damage so I can play them without getting frustrated?
I could multiclass with the artificer, but I’d need to find a way to buff up the defender to make up for the hp it’d be losing.
I don’t mind if the mech or the pc is technically the one doing the damage, as long as I get to play DPS.
I’ve looked into armorer, but what puts me off from it is that there’s no way or reason to ever remove the armor/ leave the mech, making it identical playstyle-wise to just a reflavored fighter.
Unfortunately I already have too many warforged and am not really interested in yet another. Thanks for the suggestion tho!
I didn't say anything about warforged. It is a reskin. You take the features of one thing and call it something else. Hand crossbow = gun, spells = technology, that kind of thing.
Goliath barbarian with a halfling riding it? Paladin with a re-skinned steed?
Seems like you are trying to switch between two characters, almost, which would be tough to pull off without being OP. Most armor takes too long to take off for this concept to work by RAW, I’d think.
I do like the concept of the Paladin with a re-skinned steed - summoning it in can be a call mech kind of deal, and I wouldn’t be 100% reliant on it like I would with just “your character is the mech” builds.
What if I went creation bard, rode the construct at lower levels, then picked up find greater steed as a magical secret?
All your ideas and the ones suggested have been solid, but I would talk to your DM first to make sure why they will allow before you get into the nitty-gritty of character creation. There may even be some things the two of you can work out that have not been brought up here.
Ever since the Armorer was revealed I've been wanting to play as a Goblin that rides a medium-sized armor like a mech. I know that's not actually how the subclass is meant to work, but I feel like most DM's would be fine with it.

I'd be green with envy if it was a flying sled.

How would you go about making a mech pilot?

All ideas are good ideas!
Anything involving being a mech pilot means the MECH does the DPS, not you. You can not be a DPS person while piloting a mech.
The way to do what you want is probably via a new subclass for Artificer.
Probably something based on Armorer with modifications.
With your DM's permission, build your character as the mech and have the pilot be a familiar/sidekick.
