I looked into it because a couple mentioned space isn't a defined term, but it is. PHB pg. 191.
Space
A creature's space is an area in feet that it effectively controls in combat, not an expression of its physical dimensions.
And it has a table for determining your space based on size.
So I was right in that spaces are basically cubes as defined by your size. An unoccupied space, for a medium creature, is a 5ft cube.

It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.
I don't think this would work anyhow since getting on the inside of armor isn't exactly the same as donning it, since most armor needs to be strapped into place in a lot of areas to afix it to your body and be usable. So while I would allow them to misty step into it - it still going to take them many minutes to finish donning it.
