It is also slightly annoying to track as it encourages characters to drop weapons and items all over the place, which is annoying to track, so our groups have decided that it's not free, it's your interaction with an object (and it is interacting with it anyway, so why a special case for this ?).
In my games, dropping an object is free but picking it up costs you your action. If picking up your weapon is a free interaction then it nullifies disarming abilities.
Dropping prone is also free but getting up is either all your movement or your action. Half your movement is like nothing.
