Ok i get the need for power balance but, if you play a dhampir, hexblood, or a reborn you might as well have your ancestors legacy leftovers be a race that get basically nothing other a type of movement speed. So human an aaracockra(which most dms dont allow anyway, so mostly human) only skills and movement speed types are kept. So as a elf you only get perception, you lose your trance and fey ancestry plus all other racial traits. Same with dwarfs, you lose your resistance to poison, tieflings you lose your fire resistance and natural magic, half orcs you lose savage attacker and relentless endurance.
And lastly poor dragonborns you lose everything no breath weapon and no dmg resistance.
Dhampir is cool you get spider climb, a bite that can heal and give you bonus to attacks, 35 movement and darkvision. Thats it.
Know what else that can do all those things? A wood elf warlock or sorcerer, who can't be put to sleep, can hide when lightly obscured, and has advantage on being charmed.
You lose to much an gain so little, it's a 1 step forward and 2 steps back.
I understand it's power balance and if you dont like it dont play it or just homebrew it, but if it is so bad that you have to homebrew it to fix it why even buy the book? A majority of people want this book for these lineages they just ask to give up to much an give so little back. It feels like it isn't worth the purchase.
Any feed back on how i can hopefully change my mind on this? Did i miss anything? Cause i honestly want to enjoy playing as a dragonborn Dhampir. Even if wizard could release a pubic edit on the internet that you can pick 1 or 2 racial traits to keep, since most races come with more then just one.
Edit: reborn is indeed the best one, but munus the advantage on death save if you took the supernatural give Anvilwroght it would be basically the same, still with all the racial bonuses. I feel like the lineages should be more like the Supernatural gifts from Theros. They could replace one stat with 1 point to go anywhere you want then tag on the extra stuff an have it go up with you as you level up like icon clast or the Oracle one.
If the lineage replaced a subrace feature that would be more acceptable, except with dragonborns since their whole stick is pick a subrace and the base thing changes for each one, that would just switch to necrotic for dragonborns.
Point being they i think it could been done better an more in the players favor. Cause simply they make a lot of races just weaker. a normal wood elf would beat a Dhampir wood elf at level one. Casts sleep dhampir elf lose.
99 and 44 one hundredths percent of the players buy Van Rickten's for information about running a Fantasy-Horror game. The Lineages are such a tiny part of the book that I agree with you entirely. If you bought it, you shouldn't have. It's of no use at all to you.
Honestly, the lineages are pretty playable even without keeping movement, skills, and languages from previous race. At least as good as half the other races.
They don't quite wow like some of the other new stuff with more power creep, but if the only other way to get these race features is with class levels or feats, then it is a worthwhile option to have (see now you can be a rogue or ranger, etc with spider climb and NOT multiclass).
And the reborn is nearly as good or better than the warforged which is considered one of the stronger races.
They should have been a Dark Gift IMO....they could have had some negative components to balance just adding on to a race.
For Dhamphir if you spend more than 1 hour in direct sunlight you get a level of exhaustion. You must feed on a living creature once per day or your features gradually become more gruesome in appearance. If you do not feed for 4 days you must pass a DC 16 WIS save or attack the nearest living creature.
For Hexblood you are fey and humanoid for the purposes of spells. You have DIS against WIS and CHA saves against Fey creatures
For Reborn you undead and humanoid for the purposes of spells. You cannot be resurrected by magic.
Comparing reborn to warforged is weird. Simic Hybrid and Warforged, now that makes sense.
Well the things reborn and warforged have in common are:
resistant to poison damage
Advantage against poisoned condition
Resists disease (reborn have advantage, warforged are immune)
Don't need to eat
Don't need to breath
Don't need to sleep and magic can't put them to sleep
Can remain fully conscious during a long rest
The only things warforged have that reborn doesnt get is immunity to magical aging, full immunity to disease (Only resistance), and integrated protection. But because they gain elf's trance, advantage on death saves, knowledge from a past life, and potentially a flying speed, (all of which more than make up for a +1 AC) they are probably actually stronger than warforged.
Meanwhile the warforged and simic hybrid have this in common:
Not from forgotten realms?
So I really don't know what you mean by your comment...

Or something...I came up with these in 5 minutes.
