Our DM has allowed some of the more experienced players to create 1 monster to use with their character. The campaign is completely home brew but follows all standard game rules. I' trying to create a 'monster' but I can't find an explanation of a couple of things. One is the "Hit Point Die count" , what is it and how do you calculate it? the other one is the "Hit Point Modifier" and the "Average Hit Points" . I need to know how you calculate these. Can someone explain these to me?
Look at a monster statblock. It’s hitpoints will say something like 105 (10d10 + 50)
the 10d10 is the hit die count
the +50 is the modifier
the 105 is the average
Hit dice are not really determined by anything other than how much HP you want the creature to have. The die size though usually corresponds to the size of a creature (d4 for tiny, d6 for small, d8 for medium, all the way to d20 for gargantuan). For the above creature, we can assume it is large size since that would correspond to a d10. The 10 hit dice are based on a desired number of hitpoints
the modifier is usually calculated by multiplying the creatures CON modifier by the number of hit dice, but it can be random or chosen by the DM to get the desired number as well. In the above, a CON mod of + 5 times the 10 hit dice gives 50
the average is calculated by taking the average roll of the hit dice (which is usually 1/2 the die size + 1/2, so a d10 averaged would be 5.5) times the number of hit dice, plus the modifier
Hit die count is the number of hit dice. It is calculated by looking at the number next to the hit die and saying it aloud (literally is just whatever you need to get the average HP you want).
Hit point modifier is usually just constitution mod, but can have other abilities that change it.
Average hit points is the only thing that actually needs calculated (I honestly don't know why they don't do it for you). It can be expressed as the formula: number of hit dice × (hit die average + hit point mod). Where hit die is determined by size and the average is: (highest roll + lowest roll) ÷ 2. D4 is 2.5, D6 is 3.5, D8 is 4.5, etc.

I think I got it. I'll let the DM fill in some of the blanks.
