I have a idea for a half elf ranger who rides their wolf companion into battle, but would this be possible? Would I have to ask the DM to make them a direwolf?
Not because a creature can serve as mount only if at least one size larger than you. A wolf is medium size, so is an half-elf.
A dire wolf would work being large. You would have to ask your DM since Beastmaster only let you choose a beast companion that is no larger than medium and that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower.
I thought so, but I figured I'd ask, given a human could ride a bear or centar, and they're medium (well, the player centar is)
Brown bear and centaur from the monster manual are size large and a human could ride either. On the other hand, a black bear is size medium and could not be ridden by a medium sized creature.
Similarly, a PC centaur is also size medium and could not be ridden by a medium sized creature unless the DM decided to homebrew it. I think the playable centaur race was made size medium to keep it in line with all the other player options. However, that does mean that playable centaurs are smaller than their cousins from the monster manual.

Since what you want is not within the rules, you can always opt for a small race such as a halfling or gnome. Otherwise you can ask your DM he may make your half-elf small so you can ride a wolf or even still let you ride it while medium, or give you a dire wolf instead so you can ride it as a medium half-elf.

But don't they count as one size larger for carrying stuff? Shouldn't that also count for humans riding them?

Yeah, I was already planning on asking for a dire cause they're slightly harder to kill, so being able to ride it too is a nice bonus.

Beastmaster specifies using a medium, 1/4 CR beast
Perhaps you could ask your DM if you could use a large, 1/4 CR beast
