I’m playing a module and a friendly wizard is giving me the option to put explosive runes on a melee weapon. The runes will be triggered on a successful attack and follow the regular glyph of warding result, saying the following:
“Explosive Runes. When triggered, the glyph erupts with magical energy in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on the glyph. The sphere spreads around corners. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 5d8 acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage on a failed saving throw (your choice when you create the glyph), or half as much damage on a successful one.”
As the attacker, do I have to roll this saving throw as well or am I immune to the damage since I am triggering it with a weapon on my behalf?
If I have allies within the radius, do they have to roll saving throws? I would guess that the answer is “yes” to that one.
Thanks. I don’t have a lot of experience with area of effect spells.
It affects everyone in the radius, typically. It is possible that your DM has something else in mind, so probably worth asking directly. Or maybe that wizard isn’t so friendly after all ;)
It’s actually from a solo module so I’m almost certain this wizard IS friendly. That just fits the style of this series of modules I’m playing. And based upon who the enemy is, duplicity here just doesn’t seem likely.
I think I’ll be going for the dagger. Or possibly putting it on an arrow. That’s also an option. I’m a rogue3/cleric2.

Yes, everyone in the area has to roll the save.
I'm not sure how "friendly" that wizard is...
Maybe if you put the runes on a dagger and then threw it, you'd have a chance of being outside the area of effect.

UPDATE:
Thanks, everyone. I got it :-)
