Hello, my question is on how/when the second paragraph of arcane lock is used. The first paragraph has this language: "Otherwise, it is impassableuntil it is broken or the spell is dispelled or suppressed..." To me that reads you just can't pick it when its active, period.
But then there's the second paragraph: "While affected by this spell, the object is more difficult to break or force open; the DC to break it or pick any locks on it increases by 10." Does this mean that the +10 applies when the spell is suppressed (still affected, although suppressed)?
That's how I read it...a lock with arcane lock is unpickable, but when its suppressed it can be picked with a +10 DC.
According to the wording of the spell you don't/can't cast arcane lock on a lock itself but on a "closed door, window, gate, chest, or other entryway." Thus in context it's not the lock that's impassable but the "closed door, window, gate, chest, or other entryway."
If a DM rules that a lock qualifies as "other entryway" then logically it would infer that the lock would become impassable which would prevent the lock from being picked, increase the DC to break it by 10 and increase the DC to pick any locks on the lock (note not the lock itself)... but that doesn't seem like how it's intended to work at all.
The +10 DC is an effect granted by the spell so I'd imagine while the spell is suppressed that effect is also suppressed. So while the spell is suppressed the DC to break the "closed door, window, gate, chest, or other entryway" or pick any locks on it is normal.
