An elf holding a Bulls' eye lantern can see 60ft bright in a cone, then 60 more feet in a dim cone. He cannot see anything in the darkness beyond 120 ft from him. His darkvision does NOTHING (in the cone) because it only extends 60 ft, which is all in bright light. Outside of that cone, he sees 60 ft as if it were dim.
An elf holding a Hooded lantern with the hood Off can see 30 ft bright in all directions as if bright, then 30ft more dim in all directions as if bright, nothing at all in the darkness beyond that 60 ft.
If you're an Elf with 60ft darkvision holding a hooded lantern with the hood "off", you can see the 30ft radius of bright light as bright light (of course), then the additional 30ft of dim light as if it were bright light. But anything beyond 60ft from you that's darkness is going to be darkness to you.
Now, if you were a Drow with 120ft darkvision holding that lantern, you'd see 60ft of "bright" light covering the full radius of the lantern's bright & dim light, and for 60ft beyond that, the darkness would appear to you as dim light but only in shades of gray.
For either Elf or Drow holding the lantern with the hood in place, which provides 10ft of dim light, you'd see as well in that 10ft radius as if it were bright light; and to the extent of your darkvision radius beyond that, you'd see the darkness as dim grayscale.

hi, bit confused with dark vision.
elf in an underground corridor with a lantern, bright light 30' then dim light 30' then darkness. do I see:-
1) bright for 60' then dim for 30' then darkness ( 50/50 on this being right/wrong)
or
2) bright light for 60' then darkness ( 99% sure this one is correct)
or
3) bright for 60' then dim 60' then darkness (im 99% sure this is wrong)
