we are starting a campaign at lvl 3. i am going to play a sun soul monk. i was wanting to know if attacking with the radiant sun bolt then using an unarmed strike as a bonus action was allowed.
radiant sun bolt is You gain a new attack option that you can use with the Attack action. This special attack is a ranged spell attack with a range of 30 feet. You are proficient with it, and you add your Dexterity modifier to its attack and damage rolls. Its damage is radiant, and its damage die is a d4. This die changes as you gain monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Monk table.
now the way i read it is that since it isn't an unarmed strike or a weapon you couldn't use the bonus action attack but a hoping i'm wrong. if not do you think most dms would allow it and would it be unbalaced to do so. worst case i'll use the bolt sparingly till lvl 5 when i get multiple attacks which is fine for building yusuke yurameshi so not a huge deal but thought i would ask
By strict Rules as Written you can't do the normal bonus action Unarmed Strike unless you made at least 1 unarmed or monk-weapon attack for your Attack action. But if nothing else, by RAW you'd be able to spend 1 ki point after the Sun Bolt attack to do Flurry of Blows, since the only requirement for that is having taken the Attack action. Given that, there's a fair chance your DM might be willing to allow the normal bonus unarmed strike.
I would also encourage you to take to your DM about this. By strict RAW you couldn't use all your attacks in your Attack Action to make Radiant Sun Bolt attacks and still get your Martial Arts bonus action attack. It does however come with its own version of Flurry of Blows.
As written, the radiant sun bolt does not fulfil the conditions for martial arts' bonus action unarmed strike.
At least it works with extea attack and has its own version of flurry of blows. So it is still possible to make 4 attacks with it.
But mixing melee and ranged attacks can only be mixed extra attack, then bonus action is either only sun bolts or only unarmed strikes. Always 3 to 1 ratio.

monk says When you use the Attack action with an Unarmed Strike or a monk weapon on Your Turn, you can make one Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action. For example, if you take the Attack action and Attack with a Quarterstaff, you can also make an Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action, assuming you haven't already taken a Bonus Action this turn.
