Looking through the spelljammer rules, in the races section Autognomes don’t have Darkvision listed as a racial trait. However, in the bestiary section it’s listed as one of their sensory traits.
Am I overlooking something? Is it granted by some aspect not listed in the SJ racial section?
Since they’re made by gnomes to serve gnomes, it makes since to me they would have it.
Playable race versions of a creature can vary quite a bit from an equivalent monster, and autognomes already have several strong racial traits, so Wizards of the Coast must have decided darkvision would have been too much. The Autognome didn't have darkvision in the UA version either.
Narratively autognomes are described as each being unique, so you could hand waive this as autognomes built with greater autonomy were less likely to be given this ability, while those designed to serve as miners or guards (or whatever you want the monster to represent) would be more likely to be enchanted to have darkvision?
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
I assumed as much, but wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something. There was probably a reason they left it off the PC version, maybe for balance or comedic effect. Imagine a robot knocking over everything in their master’s lab because they can’t see. As it stands, it kind of just feels like an oversight by their designers. Maybe the whole thing is a secret plot seed to the inevitable uprising of Autognomes, as the realize the flawed nature of their creators and begin questioning the morals and purposes implanted in them. But who is to say?
It might have been fun it they had designed different options to choose from for character creation to add to the sense of their individually unique nature, with one of them being Darkvision and such.

Short answer: no, they don't have darkvision.

Playable races and monsters usually have the same senses but this one appears not.
Thank you both for your responses!
