Hello, my question today is rather simple: Is there a way to hide an object and turn it invisible/see through? Now, first instinct would probably be to just cast invisibility on it, however that won't work. The spell clearly states:
"A creature you touch becomes invisible until the spell ends. [...]"
same for greater invisibility
"You or a creature you touch becomes invisible until the spell ends. [...]"
This clearly indicates that invisibility can only target creatures and thus can not be used on an object. There are plenty of ways to create an illusion of something existing where there is nothing, but is there a proper way to create the illusion of there being nothing where there is something? As always, thanks for reading and the best of days to all of you.
By RAW, perhaps not, but most DMs are ok with a little reasonable rule bending. I'd be ok with Invisibility being cast on an item. However, you could also glue the object to something like a rabbit or snail, and cast Invisibility on the surrogate creature.
A lot of spells ignore objects, which seems silly in practice.
You could also ask for an NPC to make the object invisible. There are many "off the books" abilities thay aren't available to players.
Can you elaborate on that? As I said, I can see Minor Illusions being used to create the illusion of an object being there where there isn't, but i don't see how the spell would allow you to turn something invisible. The spell specifically mentions that you create the image of an object from nothing, not change the appearance of an already existing one.

Not invisible, but you can make optical illusions of depth on an illusion around the object.
One way that our eyes perceive depth and shape is with shadows, if you have an illusion that doesn't have real shadows (like a box of images that doesn't have sharp edges or dark sides/all sides evenly lit, but with pictures of shadows), the mind will not notice the edges of the illusion covering the object.
Would you allow Minor Illusion to create the image of a passageway on a brick wall - so that, say, persuers might try to run that way, and comically rebound off the very real wall?
Because if so, surely it can also be used to create the image of floor and walls without, say, a chair, while a chair was actually there, thus effectively rendering it invisible.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.
Kind of a weird workaround, but if it's a small or tiny object you could just pick it up then cast Invisibility on yourself... anything you're wearing or carrying while Invisible also becomes invisible.
If the intent is to just kind of create a "window" to see through something (like making a single brick in a wall invisible), I think that's not allowed partly because you're meant to do spying like that through divination spells like Clairvoyance.
If the intent is to hide a trap, then an illusion spell should be able to handle it to a degree. I kind of like the idea of setting a hunting trap on a table, then using Minor Illusion to make it look like a cake or something.
I don't allow players to create illusions with depth (or "negative space") via the minor illusion cantrip. Maybe with higher level magic, though.
A player in my group wanted to use minor illusion to "make an illusion of me not being there" the first time they played. In such cases, I would allow a player to create a flat, depth-less illusion of the area around them, like a hyper-realistic painting, but not to use a cantrip to effectively gain invisibility.
Mirage arcana is a bit overkill but it can do it. There aren't really any single target object illusions. Even here its not truly invisible, you could technically make it small enough it wont be seen or blended into the background. You can work around it with silent image. Place object right next to a wall. Make an illusion that the wall extends 1 foot further than it does. Small enough amount that its hard to notice something is off big enough to cover the object.
Didn't see how old this one, and the necro was asking something else. Yeah homunculus is a creature so just turn it invisible.

Hmm. Minor illusion and similar aren't invisibility, but are close.

Outside illusions, a Wish could do it.
As DM you can turn an object invisible pretty easily by just deciding it is.
As player, you will have to talk with your DM.

I'm interested in this because I want to know if I can make homunculus servants invisible.
A homunculus servant is a creature, and therefore you can make it invisible in any of the usual ways such as casting Invisibility on it.
