I want to create a character that is based on Hypnotoad from Futurama and am trying to figure out what class/subclass to work with. The character will start at lvl 3-4 and maybe go up to lvl 8.
My first thought was an Enchantment wizard due to specializing in enchantment spells and its class feature Hypnotic Gaze.
Another could be a Sorcerer with some subclass using Subtle spell or Quickened spell.
That’s a tough one. I think that we might be able to work through some mechanics by looking into the hypnotoad a bit more.
-it doesn’t move often if at all unless there’s a female hypnotoad. -It seems to be able to hypnotize viewers of the show and groups of creatures nearby. -it’s hypnosis can compel creatures to perform acts. -with the exception of the sounds that seem to emanate from it, it makes no noise.
have a wizard friend or someone with access to the ritual spell tensers floating disc to be able to move you around so you stay with the party.
Levels in aberrant mind sorcerer or divine soul for access to calm emotions and metamagics.
subtle spell to maintain the lack of motion for somatic and speaking for verbal components.
hypnotic pattern for larger groups
extra spell slots can be sacrificed for more castings
extend can be used to make those last longer.
command and suggestion spell would be nice but it’s vocal component is separate from the actual command and requires speech. Perhaps investment in the telepathy feat could help if DM is on board with it. If not then dominate person should be used but that’s a high level spell and a long time to wait.
definitely too high a level spell for your parameters but the hypnotoad was known to kill by hypnosis so a subtle power word kill could be used for that.
grung might be the closest thing to a race but I suppose you could flavor various things to be a toad. Custom lineage or human could get you 2 more spell points or the telepathic feat earlier.
college of glamor bard, but with a squat, dull, seemingly unremarkable presence (remember: 'flavor is free') behind sleepily uninterested half-lidded eyes. a short dragonborn or triton with a wide mouth and thin lips seems more right than anything with hair, facial or otherwise. they can hunch over most of the time, maybe mumbling and cursing the effort of keeping up with the group, and then rise to the occasion becoming suddenly very intent, flinging wide their "inhuman" eyes. use Prestidigitation (or, if you fail that OOC charisma check during session zero: Thaumaturgy somehow) to adjust your eyes (and if you sell the scene really, really well maybe the DM won't remember it costs an action!) as you cast Command: DANCE! CONSUME! OBEY! by sixth level the college's Mantle of Majesty has you throwing around bonus action Commands.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: providefeedback!

Would love some fun ideas, thanks!
