Hey Guys! I'm playing a level one character (Fighter) who uses a Flintlock and is more of a Dex based Fighter rather than Str. I'm thinking of pushing him to be a Cavalier Fighter, and possibly getting a Giant Bat as his Mount, but can't think of some other pretty awesome low level mounts for this. Any other ideas other than the Bat?
Hippogriff, griffin, and giant eagles are a common go to flying mount.
How about Giant Eagle, Giant Swan, giant fly, giant owl.
As a DM I would limit a mount to having to be at least 1 size larger than the character it not 2 sizes larger. the weight of what you carry would be very limited with a mount only 1 size larger.
However, trying to shoot from a flying creature is a whole different matter. I would let you shoot at triple disadvantage while flying
Your best bet may be Human Varient
Take a feat at first level of Mounted Combatant and then Cavalier at 3rd level then I would not give you disadvantage from shooting while flying. It is a skill that will take time to develop
The thing to remember about mounts is they’re fragile. That giant bat with AC 13 and 22 hp can be shot out of the sky, and then you’re taking fall damage. Even if you take mounted combatant, a failed save against an AoE can mean a dead mount. So, don’t get too attached. The up side is, other than that level 3 ability, cavaliers don’t really need to be mounted to use their powers
What species will you be? If you’re small, you can go with medium mounts as well. They’re even more fragile, but you can take them more places
And what level will you be? I wouldn’t count on a flying mount at low levels.
You need to discuss with your DM what is available. IRL only a few animals like dogs and horses are able and willing to do what a human asks of them. I believe the same is true in D&D which is why a mastiff or mule costs much more than a goat.
As others have said most mounts are very easily killed in combat which makes mounted combat difficult in D&D. Phantom steed may be a solution if your DM rules that if it gets hit it remains fully functional for a minute and at high levels find greater steed g8ves access to sturdier (and flying) mounts.
I would say that warhorse should be fine, reasonably tough and can get better AC. Practical, fast, tough, and can carry a lot, and not too hard to obtain. Tru looking at find steed and find greater steed for more options
