Hi There, I would love to play a game of D&D with few friends - but am new to it and frankly have no idea where to start.
I looked for guides/rules online but short of reading a 300page book or watching 20 hours of tutorials online, i found nothing more 'simple'.
I'm not looking to launch a huge epic adventure (yet ;p) - i can get there gradually. For now, i'm hoping to have a pretty simple, basic game, to introduce my friends to it, and we can then go bigger from there https://showbox.bio/ .
Could anyone offer some links/tutorials or such - but really something that i could figure out with an hour and just get into it and start playing?
D&D is kind of hard to learn in an hour, but it can be done. Just be prepared to make a lot of rule mistakes your first few times playing, which is completely fine as long as your group is having fun.
I definitely recommend reading the Basic Rules that ThriKeenWarrior listed above. If you're itching to get into an adventure, you can try Lost Mines of Phandelver, an adventure written specifically for beginners, and available for free on D&D Beyond (link here). It's not too terribly long or grandiose, so if you don't like it or want to pivot to another adventure in the future you can do that easily.
There are YouTube video guides to playing D&D, but honestly, the best way to learn IMO is to read the Basic Rules/Player's Handbook, and actually start playing. Keep in mind that the '300 page book' is actually a series of 1-2 page articles on how to do a thing. If you need the rules on Actions, you can flip to that section. If you need the rules on character creation, flip to that section. You don't need to read strictly cover-to-cover, though it is best if you get a firm grasp on the rules, especially if you're going to be the DM and teaching others.
Remember, the primary goal of D&D is to have fun. Don't worry about getting all the rules right the first time around. If a question comes up (or if you find someone unknowingly broke a rule earlier), don't be afraid to just let it fly in the interest of having fun.
