New player here and I just wanted to ask if having proficiency with Medium armor negates disadvantage. For example, my ranger character has proficiency with medium armor and I want to give him scale mail but it gives disadvantage to Stealth checks. I wanted to ask here if having proficiency with the armor gets rid of the disadvantage. Either I'm blind or just dumb because I can't find it in the PHB.
Proficiency doesn't negate the disadvantage on Stealth checks that some armor imposes.
If you wear armor that you're not proficient in, you have disadvantage on all Strength and Dexterity checks, and if you can cast spells, you can't do so while wearing armor you aren't proficient in.
This is in the Player's Handbook, on page 144.
If you want to wear heavier armor, a 3-level dip into Artificer for the Armorer subclass gives you the ability to turn your armor into Arcane Armor, with the Infiltrator type, which does negate the Disadvantage on Stealth the armor normally imposes. But for a Ranger, you'll frequently find that being Dexterity-based, you'll get better use out of the lighter armors.
The conditions listed with the armor type assumes the wearer is proficient in the armor. Theses effects or prerequisites apply to balance our the bonus to AC that the character receives wearing it.
Mithral Armor: If the armor normally imposes disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks or has a Strength requirement, the mithral version of the armor doesn't.

Try Breastplate. Same AC as scalemail without the disadvantage to stealth.

There is a magic armor that can alleviate it.
