My question is, once they reach level 3 does the character return to 0 exp and then has to gain 2700 exp to get level 4, or are they still at a value of 900 and then just increase exp to 2700 (i.e. gaining 1800 exp after reaching level 3)?
Sorry if this is listed somewhere, I tried searching DMG and forums a bit but couldn't find anything clarifying it.
Its all cumulative, So level 2 you need 300 level 2-3 to need another 600 on top of that already earned 300. So no you don't reset your Exp ever like that
I've seen tables that look like:
Level 2 = 300 exp
Level 3 = 900 exp
Level 4 = 2700 exp

The Exp chart is in the players handbook under https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/step-by-step-characters#StepByStepCharacters.
