Can a gunslinger forgo using the intended firearms(pepperbox, blunderbuss, etc)and instead use standard firearms(pistol, musket, etc)and still gain the benefit of trick shots and grit points?
The Gunslinger is unofficial content anyways so you really should discuss this with your DM.
However, if I were to try and apply a RAW interpretation of the Gunslinger subclass I would say that the Gunsmith feature replaces the firearms listed in the DMG with the firearms listed in the class feature. In addition to adding firearms like the Pepperbox it provides new statistics for the pistol and musket which are in the DMG.
*Edit* I forgot to provide supporting evidence XD. Specifically I interpret Gunsmith this way because it says "These properties replace the optional ones presented in the Dungeon Master’s Guide."

Got it. Thanks
