Are you asking about the distribution by the rules or about opinions on alternative approaches?
The default way of XP distribution is outlined in chapter 8 of the DMG:
Each monster has an XP value based on its challenge rating. When adventurers defeat one or more monsters — typically by killing, routing, or capturing them — they divide the total XP value of the monsters evenly among themselves. If the party received substantial assistance from one or more NPCs, count those NPCs as party members when dividing up the XP. (Because the NPCs made the fight easier, individual characters receive fewer XP.)
We used to do it the same as we split up the cash.
It would be distributed by the old share method. All PC's got full shares and NPC's who contributed got half shares.
As a punishment those who did nothing got nothing. PC's included.
If the player was not there but the character participated they only got a quarter share. If the character was left behind because the player was not there they got nothing.
I have seem games were they split up the XP's by the amount of damage you inflict during fights.

How should XP be distributed?
I reserve the right to /stillme for any reason whatsoever.
The fires of Hell scorch you,
My vengeance terrible,
I, ascendant,
Above the flames of
The Inferno,
Of whom the lowest and most torturous
of circles is
Reserved for traitors.
The dead shall
Laugh at
Your eternal fate
Your sins
Shall return
To mock
And torment you.
