That was called out explicitly as an optional rule in the Psionics Handbook, if I recall correctly. So WotC recognized that some tables would want that.
Fun fact. Psionics were introduced in 1976 and officially added to 3e in 2001. We are approaching the time when the magic-psionics transparency model will have been the model longer.
Also, it's been ages since I opened a 2e book, but I don't think psionics and magic were completely separate even in 2e. Looking online, magical effects that were similar to psionics interacted with them similarly and a magical helm of telepathy could defend against psionics. Additionally, I suspect a large part of the division that was the breakdown of the saving throws in 1e/2e. When you are adding new psionics abilities to a system with saving throws versus spells, it easy to say these are different.
